I think the info is permanent. I think that car rental is all about profit, so they need to see if you took your car over state lines (which costs more with some rentals), for example.
I was reading on the net about how criminals are being busted because of the info they get from car gps systems. There is some other system that apparently is in lots of cars already.
I was reading about it and don't remember the details, but being a criminal is not going to be so easy in the future as more and more of these devices will be placed in new models of cars.
