I have searched all over in the news for that information but have not found it. Do they say if he was speaking on the phone or is this all via text message? The new missing poster states that he only wanted to go home. Edgemont is not all that far from Gering. Wondering why family couldn't have put him in a motel and driven down the next day.
Click on the link in the post below.

What family are you talking about - that might have put him in a motel?
Authorities search North Platte, along Highway 92 for missing Wyoming man
When she last talked to her husband, she said, he had told her he was walking south toward Kimball, but he had also contacted friends and said he was walking toward Torrington.

Purely speculation, but I wonder if CE was under the influence of alcohol that evening? In my experience, an afternoon of "golf with the boys" often equals an "afternoon of drinking with the boys". I haven't seen any mention of intoxication in any of the reports. To me, knowing whether or not he had been drinking would help put the picture together. MOO

That would be a 4-mile stretch heading west. Hwy 92 is like a back road leading out.
What is a four-mile stretch?

Gering to Kimball is approx 42 miles: Google Maps

Gering to Torrington is 36-37 miles: Google Maps

Welcome to Websleuths, DosMartillos! :) I haven't seen any mention of that either. It would be helpful to know. MOO

Alcohol could also contribute to an argument and perhaps impaired decision making by all who were under the influence. MOO.

When he said to his friends that he wanted to go home, that could have meant Edgemont Ranch where he grew up and his family lives in South Dakota. It could have meant Moorcroft, Wyoming where he lived with his wife. I am inclined to think it meant the ranch since his wife was looking to pick him up and they could have just gone on to Moorcroft, but he seemed to be avoiding her and he may have lied to her about where he was walking, to throw her off.

Both maps open up to Kimball. 92 to Torrington is a back road with not much traffic. 26 route is well-traveled with 3 smaller towns in between. I'm not certain why he would choose the dark back road with no towns in between, especially if friends going to be meeting him on route. MOO

Sorry about that. Here is the map for Torrington: Google Maps
Their search only went out 4 miles West on Highway 92.
Thank you for clarifying. MOO

No mention in MSM as to whether he or anyone had been drinking that afternoon at golf or later at the grandparents home, or what the argument was about or who it was with. Nothing.
Well, historically our WS threads would suggest he ended up in the water. Let us hope he has taken a self imposed time out.

Against the odds, holding out hope.

Amateur opinion and speculation

I have noticed the very large number of county rodeos, and a huge rodeo that just finished up in Cheyenne, Wy. and I wonder if CE could be going from one to another. Is there work to be had at these rodeos managing the stock or other kinds of things? Would he be known on sight if he showed up at one? Or does everyone know each other.
He loved the rodeo and rode bareback and bulls and one of the articles indicated that he appreciated what he had learned from one of the outfits that provided the stock for the rodeos. Could he pick up a job from one of them?
Just a thought.
Chance Leslie Englebert: Loves the outdoors and good bareback horses
This article is a couple years old and he says what he loves to do and he loves the outdoors, loves working on the ranch and loves the rodeo and when he doesn't ride bareback anymore he wants to develop a string of bareback horses of his own.
He hasn't been living his dream the last year, working a mine and a propane company. I think he is out looking for his dream.
I love to be on the family ranch helping my parents with everything from fencing to trucking with my dad. I have to be outdoors and the city drives me crazy so anything out doors I love.

Englebert missing since July 6
[...]

He competed in high school rodeos, and attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming from 2012-2016 where he earned degrees in welding and diesel machine. He rode bareback horses and bulls for the college rodeo team.

Englebert began welding for a coal mine in Gillette, Wyoming in 2017 and moved to Moorcroft, Wyoming about 9 months ago with his wife, continuing his work in Gillette. Englebert had been recently laid off when Belle Ayre announced its closure and layoffs. He had secured another job in Moorcroft and was scheduled to begin work Monday, July 8, but did not arrive on the job site. Family members say it is very uncharacteristic for him to miss work, particularly on the first day.

The family is asking people along the route from Gering to Moorcroft to be aware of his status and on alert for him or any unusual activity.

Update. Search and rescue was back out on the stable club road searching canals today and yesterday
Google Maps
Is that canal ever dry so that it could be the ditch, CE said he was walking in? Could he have been caught in a sudden surge of water during the strong storm that passed through?
I can't tell from the google maps view which direction the canal flows, what is up stream or down stream.

Even if he had been drinking at the grandparent's home earlier in the evening, this was 3 to 4 hours later, wouldn't he have been more sober then?
