I think it is possible she was abducted right there where the items were found (next to the pond). Pushed her off the bike, she ran, they grabbed her - that's how the jacket (and possibly backpack) came off. They threw her in the car and dumped the bike in the pond because it would be too easy to spot if they left it where it had fallen, close to the road. In the car they searched her, found the phone and switched it off, then probably dumped it somewhere else. This scenario would possibly need two perps, unless one perp subdued her quickly and so was able to put the bike into the pond without her running off. Sunset was around 7pm and the weather was rainy, windy and cloudy, so it was dark and not many people around. It would only take a few minutes, all in all. Sierah Joughin was taken in this way, not far from her home and still light outside. Her bike and other items were found at the abduction site, her body was found miles away a few days later.
I'm only thinking of a possible kidnapping because they haven't found a body yet.

Thank you for the insights!

Is it common for bikes to be tossed into canals and water in the NL?

I think the bike was put in the water to hide it. Without the bike, no one would know for sure where she was abducted.

bbm

Yes, very common. Stolen bikes, vandalism, etc..

Thank you, so it's also very likely the first thought one has when thinking about where to hide bike is to put it in a nearby water.

It's also possible that she was knocked off the bike, she ran, she lost her coat in the struggle and that was it - she could no longer run. The attacker then hid the bike, perhaps lost track of where the coat was in the dark, and it is still possible that she was transported away in a car by one person.

SUSPECT ARRESTED

https://nos.nl/artikel/2197097-zedendelinquent-aangehouden-voor-vermissing-anne-faber.html

In Den Dolder, a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of involvement in Anne Faber's disappearance. It concerns a sex offender who was treated in a psychiatric clinic. Faber is still missing.

The police report that the suspect was serving a long sentence for violent and sexual offences. He was preparing for his return to society.

The investigation led to the suspect yesterday. He was not arrested immediately, because the police hoped that the man would lead them to Faber. When that had not happened this afternoon, he was arrested.

SUSPECT ARRESTED, ANNE FABER STILL MISSING

Openbaar Ministerie, Dutch Public Prosecutor

Press release

https://www.om.nl/actueel/nieuwsberichten/@100561/verdachte/

A 27-year-old man from Den Dolder was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the disappearance of Anne Faber from Utrecht. Anne is still missing.

Sunday October 8th investigative information led to a 27-year-old man, who was in a forensic psychiatric ward of a mental health clinic in Den Dolder. The Public Prosecutor and police decided not to arrest the suspect immediately, in the hope that he would lead the investigation team to Anne. He was therefore closely watched. When that had still not happened Monday afternoon, he was arrested. Anne's family has been informed of the arrest.

The suspect was sentenced to a long sentence for violent and sexual offences. Within the framework of this punishment he was gradually returning to society. The main aim of the investigation is to find out where Anne is and what the suspect's involvement is in her disappearance. In addition to the questioning of the suspect, his movements are also being examined, starting from the time Anne went missing on Friday 29 September. This with the aim of finding Anne quickly. The search by the police, volunteers and defence forces continues unabatedly.

The mayors of the municipalities concerned, Jan van Zanen of Utrecht and Koos Janssen of Zeist, were closely involved in the developments surrounding Anne's disappearance.

Mayor of Zeist, Koos Janssen: "I feel very concerned about the developments surrounding Anne's disappearance. Police family investigators informed Anne's family of the arrest this afternoon. The family and friends have been living in uncertainty for a long time. Unfortunately, the arrest will not put an end to this great uncertainty. Everything remains focused on finding Anne. The emergency services will do everything in their power to do so. Many volunteers are helping. We continue to sympathise with the family and support them. Finding Anne is of the utmost importance.

The 27-year-old man who was arrested in the #disappearance of #AnneFaber committed violent and sexual crimes in 2010. #hvnl

The man who was arrested on Monday in connection with the disappearance of Anne Faber (25) from Utrecht is serving a sentence for violence and sexual offences committed in 2010. The 27-year-old man is currently living in a clinic in Den Dolder.

He is at the end of his sentence, which gives him more freedom and allows him to go outside from time to time. The Public Prosecution Service cannot tell how often and for how long. It is also not clear where the man comes from. He is registered in Den Dolder.

Investigators got the man on the radar on Sunday. Possibly because DNA on Anne's jacket was a match with DNA from the national database. The police do not want to say anything about this yet. It is clear, however, that the police kept an eye on the man in the hope that Anne could be found in this way. When that did not happen, he was arrested on Monday.

Anne has been missing without a trace since a bike ride on 29 September. In and around Huis ter Heide, searches to find her have been ongoing for days. Last week her coat was found, and a grandmother's bike and backpack that probably belong to her.

Exactly what I predicted. Someone with a previous history living in the area where her phone last pinged.

MAN ARRESTED IS A PROUD RAPIST

http://www.rtvutrecht.nl/nieuws/1677271

UTRECHT/HUIS TER HEIDE - The man arrested today in the Anne Faber case is a man who raped two girls during Queen's Day in Nijkerk in 2010.

The 27-year-old man originally comes from Zeewolde. In 2017, he is currently in the forensic psychiatric hospital Altrecht Aventurijn in Den Dolder. He was gradually returning to society.

He expressed no regret after the rape in Nijkerk in 2010. In fact, he declared in court that he was proud of his action.

The man was arrested this afternoon at 16.00 hours because of possible involvement in the Anne case. It is not yet known exactly what he is suspected of.

The 25-year-old woman has still not been found. The police hoped that the suspect could lead them to her whereabouts, but that has not (yet) happened.

PERPETRATOR IN 2011: RAPE WAS 'A DREAM COME TRUE'

https://nijkerk.nieuws.nl/nieuws/28180/zestien-jaar-cel-voor-verkrachting-meisjes-nijkerk/

Nijkerk, 21 June 2011 13:49.

On Tuesday, a 21-year-old man from Zeewolde was given a prison sentence of sixteen years for the rape of two girls in Nijkerk. The sentence of the Arnhem court was more severe than the public prosecutor's office, which had demanded fifteen years' imprisonment for the rapes and six street robberies.

The judge imposed a heavier sentence because of the brutality of the rapes and the social unrest that the man caused. The man declared to two fellow suspects that he was proud of his deed and that a dream had come true.

The man refused to cooperate with an investigation by the Pieter Baan Centrum, which prevented the imposition of a hospital order. The court has also therefore imposed the most severe prison sentence for his offences.

Last year the victims were sitting on a bench in the night after Queen's Day [ April 30 ] at a sports complex in the Nachtegaalsteeg when the man forced them at gunpoint into some shrubs. There they were raped several times.

The police put 25 investigators on the case. The 21-year-old inhabitant of Zeewolde was detained at the beginning of July. The man committed the robberies with a companion. This 25-year-old man has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

APPEAL IN 2012: PUBLIC PROSECUTOR: 16 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPIST IS TOO LONG

http://www.omroepflevoland.nl/nieuw...ndt-16-jaar-celstraf-voor-verkrachter-te-hoog

The prosecutor's office considers the 16-year prison sentence that the court imposed last year on a Zeewoldenaar to be too high. The man was sentenced for a double rape in Nijkerk and a series of robberies. The Public Prosecutor's Office demanded a term of imprisonment of 10 years on appeal to the Arnhem Court of Appeal.

The man threatened two girls with a fake gun and had them perform all kinds of sexual acts. He was also involved in six violent robberies in Nijkerk and the surrounding region.

Last year, the defendant did not receive any professional psychiatric hospital order because he refused to cooperate in psychological examinations, and during his appeal he did not answer any questions from the court of appeal. On the advice of his lawyer, he invoked his right to remain silent.

The Public Prosecutor's Office reassessed the case and reviewed the level of penalties in similar cases. This is how the lower request was formulated.

Why was he allowed to walk around unsupervised only 7 years later? Hopefully this is a lesson to whatever judge thought 16 years was too heavy. Now he has escalated to murder. Bravo.

I kind of agree with you. I'm not sure how usual kidnapping is in NL, but it might make sense. Perp could have gotten rid of her stuff after the fact. As a way to get Le searching away from where she is being held.

I do hope Anne is found safe.
