I see that the contact information I found is no longer in service (ETA: except for the number Miss Muffet contacted about Philip!) .. so I found an old publication of Field and Stream where they were advertising a Mark Pack Works bag .. they listed an address for where you can purchase - 1803 Eastshore Highway Berkeley, CA 94710 - I put that address in, and it pulled up as Apollo Printing and also at one time was a Windwing Design .. now there is an old wood furniture store there ..

Interesting. That's a new address to add to the list.

It's perplexing that he runs a business in a manner that appears to be extremely difficult for customers and suppliers to reach.

I would suspect that any silkscreening company who purchases another silkscreen business would/could purchase all of the inventory as well. It might be worth a try to contact the last silkscreen owner (ie:Windwing design) to see if they still have the original silk screens - and maybe the paperwork about the image. Who knows maybe they have all of the previous business records of who they sold this design to (ie: Mark pack 1975 - 1990 design #...., etc). It is a big long shot but it might be worth a look-see

Mark Pack Works is also classified as a fabric supplier on the internet business listings. Since this company is now out of business, we can't pursue if he supplied fabric for the sails, but it's a good idea to keep in mind the wide range of products he supplied.

There are a handful of Philip Marks in California and the immediate greater San Fran area. I believe the one who lived in Oakland isn't our man because I found a facebook page for an African American named Philip Mark in Oakland California who isn't in this type of business and isn't in the same age range. I believe our Philip Mark lives in San Francisco, but I can't be sure of that even.

Nah the FB guy wasn't him. The Oakland one is 66.. What age are we talking? Did we find that?

I still can't get past the whole issue of "upcycling" the bag. To me that means they took a teeshirt and sewed it into the backpack. Maybe they took the seams apart on the bag, added the graphic portion of the tee shirt and then posted it online.

It would not be a "upcycled" or "repurposed" if no modifications had been done to the backpack (IMO). I just think the bag was made from Mark Pack Works and the tee-shirt had nothing to do with this pack until the etsy poster put them together.

Has anyone found a Mark Pack backpack with other silkscreens from this artist on them? If Mark Pack had the silkscreen of the red tailed hawk - why not just silk screen it directly to the pack? Instead it looked like the cotton fabric attached to the pack (in the original Equestrianista's post). Am I missing something?

I still can't get past the whole issue of "upcycling" the bag. To me that means they took a teeshirt and sewed it into the backpack. Maybe they took the seams apart on the bag, added the graphic portion of the tee shirt and then posted it online.

It would not be a "upcycled" or "repurposed" if no modifications had been done to the backpack (IMO). I just think the bag was made from Mark Pack Works and the tee-shirt had nothing to do with this pack until the etsy poster put them together.

Has anyone found a Mark Pack backpack with other silkscreens from this artist on them? If Mark Pack had the silkscreen of the red tailed hawk - why not just silk screen it directly to the pack? Instead it looked like the cotton fabric attached to the pack (in the original Equestrianista's post). Am I missing something?

I was told it referred to the raccoon back pack, not the hawk one. Hope that helps.

Yes they want contact info. Did you ask the supplier CST if they had a current address or phone? Are they shipping to the address on that website? If that address is still valid but the phone is non-working he may be using only cell phones.
