Sweat actually disengaged from Matt about five days ago," the governor said. "Which answers why there was no DNA of Sweat in the last cabin that they were in or the previous cabin because Sweat felt that Matt was slowing him down as a matter of fact."

The governor also revealed that the original escape plot was for the men to drive to Mexico, where Matt served prison time, with prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who has been charged for allegedly aiding their escape. Mitchell allegedly was supposed to pick the two up outside the prison walls on the night of their escape.
"They would kill Mitchell's husband, then get in the car and drive to Mexico on the theory that Mitchell was in love with one or both of them," Cuomo said. "Then they would go live happily ever after, which is a fairy tale that I wasn't read as a child. But we all believe what we want to believe."
When Mitchell wasn't waiting for them, the two decided to head for Canada.
The details emerged after State Police investigators interviewed Sweat at Albany Medical Center, where he is in stable condition, according to the governor, after being shot twice by a State Police sergeant who spotted him in Constable, Franklin County, Sunday. It was not clear when that interview took place.
