Here are more things I came across:
All quotes are from Tupper Lake Free Press article on 3/14/12, pages 1 & 6 unless otherwise noted (I realize this was an early news report so some details may be inaccurate)

*** On page 1 there is a picture that shows the snow cover on the side of the road and into the woods where searchers were looking - looks like there was still a fair amount of snow when the searching began.
re: fight
---Mr. Gillis reportedly wandered away from a party at a private residence on Paskungameh Road on Saturday night. There had apparently been a fight at the party. (has anyone found any real details about this supposed fight?)
re: early searching/timeframe
---"Mr. Gillis was reported missing at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 by his mother Family members and friends had been looking for Colin since Sunday. Wayne LaPierre and his dog, who are members of Search and Rescue Team of the Northern Adirondacks, began searching for Colin Sunday as well."
re: Colin's description
---Mr. Gillis is six-feet one-inch tall and weighs 170 pounds. He was reportedly wearing a white shirt with black stripes, blue jeans and sneakers, according to the release. Colin was possibly carrying a orange back pack and possibly wearing a red or black reversible coat, the rangers said."
---"Some of the forest rangers were more specific Tuesday in the description of Colins apparel, saying the white shirt with black stripes he was wearing was an American Eagle brand. He was, in fact, carrying an orange back pack and his Nike sneakers were red in color. Reports indicate that he was, in fact, wearing a red and black reversible coat, with the black side out, one ranger told his party."
---"Mr. Rosentreter (last known eye-witness) said the man was wearing what he described as a baseball style shirt, but wearing no coat. He also disputed a report this week that Colin Gillis was carrying a backpack."
(later news reports indicate he MAY HAVE had the backpack & coat ... obviously they never turned up)
re: weather
---"Temperatures were rising quickly Monday morning, hitting above 50 degrees F. by mid-day. Temperatures had been in the teens, however, both Saturday and Sunday nights." On Tuesday: "The temperature had been relatively warm overnight and was over 45 degrees F. by 9a.m. Light rain was falling."
re: official search
---"Addressing the potential searchers about 9:15a.m., two forest rangers, Pete Evans and Jim Waters of the Ray Brook unit, explained the procedure that would be followed that day. They called it a type 3 search, where participants would walk almost shoulder to shoulder looking for the smallest clues, which included small pieces of Colins clothing or even broken branches. They cautioned the searchers that some of the terrain they would be searching that day in the forested lands aligning Route 3 was quite rough and often contained thick brush and swampy areas."
re: last sighting
---"Rich Rosentreter, editor of the Lake Placid News, was returning from Hogansburg and Massena that evening with his mother, Stella, at 1:45a.m. in his small pickup when he spotted a man walking alongside the highway against traffic towards Piercefield. Mr. Rosentreter said he spotted the man near the snowplow turnaround near the county line on Route 3, walking in a westerly direction. Mr. Rosentreter said the man was wearing what he described as a baseball style shirt, but wearing no coat. He also disputed a report this week that Colin Gillis was carrying a backpack. Since the mercury that evening was hovering in the teens, the former Adirondack Daily Enterprise reporter said he began to become concerned about the pedestrians dress. Upon arriving in Tupper Lake a few minutes later, he immediately stopped at the village police department where Sergeant Eric Proulx was on duty and told him about the incident. State troopers were immediately notified, Mr. Rosentreter said."
