A deal that involves no jail time?

IMO:
I can't imagine Santos agreeing to doing any time because being the arrogant narcissist he is going to trial and swaying a jury would be a cakewalk to him.

'Former congressman George Santos expected to plead guilty to charges related to campaign fraud Monday'

Source: CNN Politics

Updated 11:28 PM EDT, Fri August 16, 2024

CNN — Former New York Rep. George Santos is expected to plead guilty Monday to federal charges relating to fraudulent activity during his 2022 midterm campaign, according to multiple sources familiar with the deal.

Santos, who was expelled from the House last year, previously pleaded not guilty to 23 federal charges, including allegations of fraud related to Covid-19 unemployment benefits, misusing campaign funds and lying about his personal finances on House disclosure reports.

CNN has reached out to Santos, his attorney and the US Eastern District of New York prosecutor’s office for comment.

The expected plea would come months after his campaign fundraiser, Sam Miele, pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge as part of a plea deal in November. His former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States by committing one or more federal offenses in October.'

Will he get jail time? Hope so

Will he get jail time? Hope so
I can't see him ever making a plea deal where jail time is included unless his lawyer(s) finally convinced him that a jury trial would be disastrous for him.
Maybe he's trying for home confinement so he can continue making those stupid "Cameo" videos that people actually pay him for?
Then he can pay back whoever he scammed?
Not many sympathetic juries out there lately for politicians.
Trump and Mendenez come to mind, Bannon and Navaaro too.

A reminder of just what Santos was charged with.
It was reported last Dec.that Santos was in negotiations for a plea deal.
I still can't fathom Santos agreeing for any jail time and also can't fathom the state agreeing to no jail time in a plea deal.

Why people hand over their hard-earned money to charlatans who are accused of financial crimes is beyond me, yet we see it happen.

I don't think a jury will be as generous when they hear evidence he ripped off donors while representing their district in Congress. (I hope they are angry at the local people who propped him up as candidate in the first place too.)

I just can't wrap my head around a plea deal from prosecutors that Santos would agree to that involved prison time.
Which is why I'm hanging in a state of disbelief until we see it.
They'll be a lot of backlash, especially from Long Islanders if Santos got away with house arrest, fines etc.
He committed some serious felonies.

Santos had 32 counts.

Is this going to be one of those deals where he gets to plead guilty to like 2 or 3 of the lesser felonies?

Nancy Mark's sentencing was originally scheduled for Sept and was adjourned until Nov, which indicates she had info on Santos for the prosecution which usually helps in giving one a more lenient sentence.

She was probably required to testify against Santos if he went to trial, common with plea deals.

'Former congressman George Santos expected to plead guilty'

'The former lawmaker was ousted from the House and is expected to plead guilty to multiple felony counts Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter.'

'Days before the additional charges against Santos were brought last year, Nancy Marks, treasurer for the Santos campaign, pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy and implicated him in a scheme to embellish his campaign finance reports with a fake loan and fake donors. The next month, another Santos staffer, Samuel Miele, pleaded guilty to a wire fraud charge, conceding that he had claimed to be chief of staff to former House speaker Kevin McCarthy to attract donors to Santos’s campaign.'

A somewhat detailed description on each of Santo's charges.
If he does plead guilty it will be interesting to see what the prosecutor(s) let slide. (scream)

'The 23 felony charges'

"Santos’s charges, 23 in total, include various levels of conspiracy, fraud, false statements, falsification of records, identity theft and money laundering.

He was charged with 13 counts in May 2023, then 10 more in October of that year. Santos initially pleaded not guilty to the federal charges, calling the whole thing a “witch hunt.” These are the original 13 charges:

  • Wire fraud (7 counts): Prosecutors allege that Santos, along with an unnamed consultant, solicited thousands of dollars in donations for a fraudulent political fund called RedStone Strategies. Instead of using the funds for political purposes, Santos reportedly kept over $200,000 for himself and spent it on designer clothes, illicit websites and personal expenses.
  • Money laundering (3 counts): Santos is accused of transferring $50,000 from two different donors into separate personal bank accounts. He then reportedly moved the money between these accounts in a manner that prosecutors consider laundering.'

6/4/24 Update: A grand jury on Tuesday returned a second superseding indictment against Santos in the Eastern District of New York. U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said the new superseding indictment "does not allege new criminal conduct, charge the defendant with new crimes or make new substantive allegations against the defendant." Instead, Peace said in the court document the added indictment would be to correct Scrivener's errors & make other minor changes ahead of the anticipated Sept. 9 trial. Peace said the second superseding indictment is "materially indistinguishable from the first superseding indictment." Next status hearing on 8/13/24.
8/13/24 Update: The prosecution asked to submit his campaign lies as evidence, saying he "deliberately leveraged them to perpetuate the criminal schemes." The lies include: Graduating from Baruch College and New York University; being an accomplished college volleyball player; having grandparents who survived the Holocaust; working at Citigroup & Goldman Sachs; fabricating his family wealth & stealing from campaign contributors. Prosecutors also petitioned Judge Joanna Seybert to allow statements from Santos' former campaign manager, Nancy Marks, who pleaded guilty last year to falsifying campaign finance reports. They also asked the judge to block Santos from claiming at trial he's the victim of vindictive prosecution & that he's already been punished enough. The judge said she'll decide those issues as they come up at trial. Prosecutors also claimed Santos' lawyers may be withholding evidence. The defense turned over roughly 400 pages of documents, compared to prosecutors' 1.3 million pages. Santos' defense team asked for a partially anonymous jury, citing the "extensive & largely negative media coverage," and adding, "jurors could face harassment or intimidation." The judge agreed. Next month, 348 prospective jurors -- whittled down from 850 -- will report for the selection of 12, along with 6 alternates. The defense wanted each & every one to fill out a 137-item jury questionnaire. The judge dismissed the questionnaire, calling it offensive & said she favors one-on-one questioning. Judge Seybert on Tuesday granted Santos’ request for a partially anonymous jury in which the individual jurors’ identities will be known only by the judge, the two sides & their attorneys. Prosecutors had previously said they didn’t object to the measure, given the case’s high-profile nature. Judge Seybert confirmed that jury selection starts 9/9/24.
8/16/24 Update: A request came Friday afternoon in a letter from prosecutors who said they & defense attorneys sought a hearing but did not say why. The same letter also requested an extension of time for the defense to respond to pretrial motions. The judge granted both requests & set the hearing for 3pm at U.S. District Court in Central Islip on 8/19/24. The purpose of the hearing was not immediately clear. It is speculated that Santos is expected to plead guilty to “multiple counts” of his sprawling fraud indictment at a hearing Monday, according to a source familiar with the case.

If there isn't a plea deal then the defense being granted "an extension of time" would suggest that the trial scheduled to begin on Sept.9 will be delayed?

Well - I guess we will have to wait & see. All the MSM articles say he is going to plea guilty - but you are correct on questioning the extension of time from both sides in the letter.

So - who knows??!! LOL! :)

and yes - the trial would be delayed if they still have pending motions... let us hope not!

If he does plead guilty and prison time is included then we'll know that his lawyers convinced him that the evidence against him was beyond damning and look what recent jurors had to say about Trump and Menendez.
In the recent hearing the judge asked the state to stream down their list of 30 witnesses and Santos financial gal who plead guilty and had her sentencing delayed until Nov was going to be a witness for the state which is common practice to get a plea deal from the prosecution.

No news this weekend that Georgie was out and about doing his partying shtick in a club declaring his innocence and to stay tuned for his return to politics to fight off the Democrat commies. lol

???

"Santos, 36, is scheduled to appear for a hearing at federal court in Central Islip, New York, at 3 p.m. EDT on Monday, where he is expected to give a statement about the crimes he has agreed to plead guilty to, according to The New York Times, which cited two unnamed lawyers and two others with knowledge of the case."
