Heavy hitting lawyer Jennifer McCann was brought in to help defend the confessed killer of little Leiby Kletzky, one day after one of his lawyers abruptly quit.

The addition of McCann appears to strengthen what was considered by some lawyers a shaky defense team.

Lead Attorney
Bazile, a former cop, was admitted to the bar only four years ago, records show. :floorlaugh:

"I bet that's his first homicide case," a source said. :giggle:

Anyone else having deja vu? Is this the new trend?
New lawyers defend murder defendants in high profile cases? :waitasec:

Authorities were busy not only at Aron’s home, allegedly where the murder happened, but in other places in the country. Using Aron’s DNA, police were investigating whether he may be connected to any other cases of child abuse — or worse.

Investigators are fanning out to Tennessee, Arkansas and Florida. In all those places he either married or was engaged to single Jewish women.

It is a tribute from a Florida family to a Brooklyn boy who was killed just days before his 9th birthday.

The parents of a newborn in Miami named their infant 'Leiby' -- in memory of the 8-year-old boy from Borough Park...

Another search after the kids clothes...

They took a computer and a cell phone...

Five boxes and three large bags of evidence.

Tennessee, Arkansas and Florida??? I was only aware of Tennessee. When was Adj taken?

2009 but I was told by other posters that LA would have "stuck out" in Adji's community, so probably not him.

SOMEbody has to defend the guy in order for due process to work. Older lawyers might not need to boost. They've paid their dues and built their reputations, so they aren't going to compromise their integrity in a case like this. Younger ones are just getting started and making a name for themselves and are more willing.

I would think that people would want him to have the best defense possible so that once convicted we can throw away the key and forget about him. If he has young inexperienced lawyers it can cause him to appeal based on poor defense. We don't want that. We should respect the defense attorneys who take on these horrible cases when you know straight away the guy is guilty. It's part of what needs to be done for justice.

Also, just because a lawyer is newer or inexperienced with regards to murder cases does not mean s/he is going to do a poor job. Sometimes effort and enthusiasm can go a long way over experience, particularly if you're dealing with a defense attorney who has burnout. Whether you're prosecuting or defending, criminal law can really take its toll.

I respect the one attorney for bowing out when he realized he could not handle the case, and I am happy the defendant is being given adequate counsel. Everyone deserves fair representation in this country.

Theres a movie called "Steel Toes" - neo-nazi up for murder - free Jewish defence attorney.
VERY grafic beginning but IMO great incite into how the case disrupted and changed the defence lawyers life, worth the watch.

Time magazine article:

We teach our children not to talk to strangers, but — as in Leiby's case —sometimes they have to.

-snip-

Look for someone in uniform is a tough concept for a 4-year-old to grasp; to her, a uniform could be a princess outfit. In fact, when recently discussing a fire escape plan for our family, I explained to her that although generally she shouldn't leap into the arms of muscular men she doesn't know, if one comes stomping through her house in the event of a fire, she shouldn't run and hide. It was all very confusing.

The issue of child sex abuse has an undercurrent in the Jewish Community following Leiby's death.

There are 3 news organizations publishing on this tonight, curiously, two of which are Canadian.

Sex abuse issue emerging in Orthodox Jewish community

MONTREAL — A rabbinical court has brought the long-hidden issue of sexual abuse in Montreal’s Orthodox Jewish community out into the open.

The debate unfolded as New York was rocked last week by the horrific killing of eight-year-old Leiby Kletzky in Brooklyn, abducted as he walked home from a Jewish day camp.

Media reports have suggested that members of the close-knit Hasidic community kept a list of alleged child molesters that it had not turned over to police.

On Tuesday, the Rabbinical Council of America stated that those with reasonable suspicion or first-hand knowledge of abuse or endangerment have a religious obligation to report that abuse to the secular legal authorities without delay.

“False accusations are harmful to those falsely accused — but unreported abuse or endangerment can be life-threatening, as we have recently been tragically reminded,” the council said in a statement.

Orthodox groups clarify positions on reporting child abuse

July 26, 2011

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Two Orthodox Jewish groups have released statements attempting to clarify their positions on reporting child abuse.
Agudath Israel of America and the Rabbinical Council of America were responding to what the former called “misleading claims about our stance on reporting suspected child abusers to law enforcement agencies.”

Kamenetsky said in a speech July 12 in Brooklyn -- while a search was being conducted for an 8-year-old Brooklyn boy, Leiby Kletzky -- that the sexual abuse of a child should be reported to a rabbi, who then would determine if the police should be called. Leiby's dismembered body was found the following day in a dumpster and in the apartment of Levi Aron, who has been indicted for murder.

Leiby Kletzky Memorial Fund Unites Many

The Leiby Kletzky Memorial Fund is quickly approaching its $1 million dollar goal with a collection of $230,192.

The fund’s mission is to help troubled children at risk and indigent families. It was established by Leiby's parents, Nachman and Esty Kletzky, on July 21 to perform “acts of kindness” for children and families

For Leiby Kletzky, A Tree Will Grow in Prospect Park

A neighbor has started a fund to plant a tree in Prospect Park in Lieby's memory

Two weeks after 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky’s body was discovered in a Fourth Avenue dumpster, family friends, neighbors and even perfect strangers are coming together to ensure that the memory of the young Borough Park resident long outlives his short life.

“Planting a tree in Leiby’s honor doesn’t bring him back, but it is a way for our community to honor this child and do something good for the family.”

Alperin said she was inspired by the Jewish tradition of tree planting in Israel to honor deceased loved ones.

In the dry, arid land of Israel, trees are symbolic of growth, rejuvenation and life.

and still climbing!

The young legal eagles are gearing up for the case of their lives as accused killer Levi Aron is set to appear in Brooklyn Supreme Court Thursday on murder charges for snatching and butchering little Leiby Kletzky.

"It's not about defending his actions,"
lawyer Jennifer McCann said.
"It's about defending his rights."

The results of Aron's psychiatric exams are expected to be revealed this week.
His defense team intends to have their experts determine if an insanity defense is viable.

They are also expected to ask for a change of venue
, arguing the jury pool has been tainted, The News has learned.

The lawyers said they also hope Aron's mental state and a desire to shield Leiby's family from the gory details will persuade prosecutors to consider a deal down the road.

Who Would Defend Accused Killer Levi Aron?
She Would

http://www.wpix.com/news/wpix-interview-levi-aron-lawyer,0,4306178.story

Depending on the deal they negotiate, it might be the best course of action for Leiby's family, from what we've heard. I'm curious if anyone will speak for the family about their wishes - with some of what we've heard, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd prefer the deal in an attempt to shield the family from the details.

There's no dispute here over the crime committed. Any deal is going to be quite strict. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over time.

A media report said Levi Aron’s family was paying for his defense. My understanding is Aron’s family reached out to Pierre Bazile for help and Aron’s family is footing LA’s legal bill.

McCann said she will in all likelihood be working this case pro bono because Levin Aron can’t afford to pay her which implies Aron’s family withdraw their financial support but I don’t believe they would do that. Aron’s family’s willingness to pay Aron's legal bills is a sign they are supporting him which could also mean they feel compassion for him so why did JM deny they were paying for Aron’s defense?

If JM’s life is being threatened for taking on Aron’s case, she now lives in a heightened state of fear and anxiety so JM’s safety issues need to be addressed so she feels safe again and she is free to work in an emotional climate that is free of harrassment. Pierre Bazile is a large male so JM is an easier target of the two. If someone decided to harm Aron’s lawyers, they will likely pick on JM.

JM is currently 30 years of age and I didn’t see a ring on her finger so she may be single and living alone. JM might not be able to physically defend herself if she was physically attacked by a male at her home or when she is out in the community so she needs to address her security needs and take extra precautions to make sure she is safe at all times. JMO.
