‘Junior’ killer Jonaiki also lands in solitary confinement on Rikers Island (with clip)

JUNE 24, 2019

"THE BRONX — Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, the Trinitarios gang member convicted of slicing the jugular vein of 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, was also thrown into solitary confinement on Rikers Island, PIX11 News has learned.

He joins another convicted killer from the Junior case, Jose Muniz, in the punitive segregation area at Rikers' George R. Vierno Center.

Two sources told PIX11 Martinez Estrella was actually put in “the box” before he was convicted of first-degree murder because of an argument he had with a correction officer...."

Sentencing delayed for 5 convicted in ‘Junior’ murder, as defense asks judge to dismiss top count

JULY 11, 2019

"BRONX — Sentencing has been delayed for the first five defendants convicted in the murder of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, PIX11 learned Thursday.

New York State online records show the sentencing date for the five defendants has been moved to Aug. 13, from an initial date of July 16.

The clerk’s office at Bronx Supreme Court later confirmed the “Junior” case is “adjourned to Aug 13.”

The five defendants — Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, Elvin Garcia, Manuel Rivera, Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago and Jose Muniz — were convicted on June 14 of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, second-degree gang assault and second-degree conspiracy...

We learned the five defense attorneys filed motions, asking Judge Robert Neary to dismiss the top first-degree murder conviction, arguing the evidence presented did not prove a murder by “torture,” an element that was part of the indictment, according to a source.

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office will now have to respond to these motions...."

Mystery surrounds reported hospitalization of ‘Junior’ killer, Manuel Rivera

AUGUST 18, 2019

"BROOKLYN — The New York City Department of Correction disputed an Instagram post Sunday that stated one of “Junior’s” convicted killers, Manuel Rivera, had been poisoned.

The DOC’s Deputy Commissioner for Public Information, Peter Thorne, told PIX11 News, “We have looked into the allegation and this claim is false.”

A frenzy of speculation started Sunday afternoon, when @_jake_fromstatefarm_ posted on Instagram, “….Manuel is on his death bed in the hospital cause someone poisoned him as of yesterday….”

Rivera, 19, is the youngest of the five Trinitarios gang members convicted in the June 2018 stabbing of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman Feliz outside a Bronx bodega....

Rivera has been housed at the Brooklyn Detention Center awaiting sentencing...."

Jailed ‘Junior’ killer bought bad batch of K2 and hallucinated: source

AUGUST 19, 2019

"BROOKLYN — He wasn’t poisoned; he poisoned himself with K2.

That’s what a law enforcement source is telling PIX11 about Manuel Rivera, 19, one of the convicted killers of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz. Rivera was brought to the hospital over the weekend from his Brooklyn jail....

A frenzy of speculation began Sunday afternoon when @_jake_fromstatefarm_ wrote on Instagram, “….Manuel is on his death bed in the hospital cause someone poisoned him as of yesterday…”

When PIX11 reached out to the Department of Correction, Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Peter Thorne said, “We have looked into the allegation and this claim is false.”

By Sunday night, @_jake_fromstatefarm_ said Manuel was “doing good” and claimed Rivera was poisoned by a cracker given to him through his cell door.

Yet by Monday morning, a law enforcement source told PIX11 the drug K2 was the reason Rivera started hallucinating in jail.

“He bought a bad batch of K2,” the source told PIX11, citing a Correction Department contact. “He bought it and he smoked it and he had a bad reaction.”

K2 is another name for synthetic marijuana, which really isn’t marijuana at all...."

Defense attorneys for ‘Junior’ killers file strategic legal motions in hopes of cutting their prison time (with clip)

SEPTEMBER 5, 2019

"The BRONX — Twenty-five years to life is better than 40 years to life.

That’s part of the legal thinking behind a recent move by the attorney for convicted "Junior" killer Jonaiki Martinez Estrella.

Defense lawyer Kyle Watters filed a motion this past Friday, just as the long Labor Day weekend was starting, asking Judge Robert Neary to set aside Martinez Estrella's conviction for conspiracy in the second degree....

The reason behind the motion to dismiss the conspiracy conviction: The judge could conceivably decide to sentence the killers to 15 years for conspiracy, which could be served after the murder sentence. That could add up to 40 years to life.

Watters argued during the trial that conspiracy to kill Junior or anyone else wasn't proven, but the judge denied a motion to dismiss the count.

Now he wants his arguments on the record again.

"I believe they didn't prove the elements of this part of the crime," Watters told PIX11 by phone Thursday morning....

The attorney for convicted Junior killer Jose Muniz—who infamously wielded a machete during the gang attack outside a Bronx bodega—also filed court papers seeking for the conspiracy conviction to be thrown out.

Sentencing for the five defendants convicted of killing Junior—Elvin Garcia, Manuel Rivera, Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, Jose Muniz, and Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago—has already been delayed twice this summer.

The current sentencing date is set for Tuesday, Sept. 17...."

Mom of slain Bronx teen ‘Junior’ says killers’ attorneys are ‘trying to get attention’; sentencing delayed 3rd time (with clip)

SEPTEMBER 12, 2019

"THE BRONX — The mother of slain teen Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz expressed frustration Thursday morning, as sentencing for the five Trinitarios gang members convicted of killing her 15-year-old son was delayed a third time.

Defense lawyers have filed new motions in recent weeks, some seeking to have the conspiracy conviction thrown out. The five men were convicted of first degree murder, second degree murder, conspiracy, gang assault and weapons possession.

“I think the defense attorneys are trying to get attention,” Leandra Feliz said, “because the case is high profile.”

Regarding defense efforts to get the conspiracy conviction dismissed, Feliz asked, “How are they able to say that, when they know they’re members of a gang?”

The new sentencing date set by Judge Robert Neary of the Bronx Supreme Court is Oct. 11.

Pre-trial hearings for eight more men charged with second degree murder — accused of taking part in the chase that led to Guzman-Feliz’s fatal stabbing outside a Bathgate Avenue bodega — is set for Oct. 21...."

Killer Jose Muniz writes letter ‘to set the record straight’ before ‘Junior’ murder sentencing

SEPTEMBER 16, 2019

"THE BRONX — Jose Muniz was known as the “machete guy” in the vicious gang killing of 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz in the Bronx, but his lawyer told PIX11 the full story never came out, so Muniz has written a letter to be read at his sentencing next month “to set the record straight.”

Martin Goldberg, defense attorney for 22-year-old Muniz, said the letter, which was translated from Spanish to English, was well done.

Goldberg will read it for Muniz at sentencing on Oct. 11....

Muniz did not inflict the fatal wound....

On the day of his conviction for first- and second-degree murder, conspiracy, gang assault and weapons possession, on June 14, Muniz dramatically yelled on his way out of the courtroom “Hasta la Murte” — Til Death — making his solidarity with the gang very clear...."

‘Junior’ trials being split up, 2 accused Los Sures leaders tapped for 2nd case

SEPTEMBER 23, 2019

"THE BRONX — Two accused leaders of the Trinitarios gang will face a jury in the second phase of the “Junior” murder case, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Diego Suero, an alleged Los Sures leader charged with giving the order to hunt a member of the rival Sunset crew, and Frederick Then, another suspected, high-ranking member of Los Sures—were slated to go on trial Oct. 21.

Six other accused gang members won’t have a conference until Nov. 12, and that means it’s likely their trials won’t happen until 2020.

Five Trinitarios gang members were convicted of Murder in the First degree back in June and still await sentencing....
Two cooperating witnesses in the case, Kevin Alvarez and Michael “Sosa” Reyes, made plea deals to cooperate with Bronx prosecutors and testified in the first trial.

They are expected back at the second and third trials.

Alvarez pleaded guilty to Manslaughter 1, a charge that could be dropped if he honors his commitment to testify truthfully at all trials. He would have a conspiracy conviction remain on his rap sheet.

Michael “Sosa” Reyes could have all charges dropped if he satisfies the government agreement."

"NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The NYPD has arrested 10 members of the dangerous Trinitarios gang, including two suspects police say are tied to the brutal killing of Bronx teen Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz.

In a press conference on Wednesday, authorities announced the arrests were made in a takedown by the Bronx Gang Squad.

Police were responding to at least two “overt acts of violence” using knives and machetes allegedly carried out by the notorious street gang....

The NYPD says these suspects are allegedly part of the Los Sures subset within the Trinitarios and are connected to the 2018 murder of “Junior” Guzman-Feliz...."

Five of ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz’s attackers sentenced to up to life in prison

October 11, 2019

"A Bronx judge slammed the five gangbangers who killed Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz with lengthy prison terms Friday, but saved his sharpest rebuke for the teen’s “cowardly” executioner.

Judge Robert Neary handed down the sentences to the Trinitarios gang members separately in Bronx Criminal Court, first sending Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, 25, to prison for life without the possibility of parole for the heinous caught-on-camera June 20, 2018 machete and knife killing of 15-year-old Guzman-Feliz.

“Certain words come to mind when I think about your involvement,” Neary said to Martinez Estrella. “Senseless is one of these words. Savage is another word. But the one that often comes to my mind is cowardly.”...

“You and your fellow gang members chased down and slaughtered a 15-year-old, defenseless boy in the most gruesome manner and we in this courtroom had the misfortune of witnessing it on tape,” the judge said.

Neary, who called Martinez Estrella the “executioner,” continued: “You destroyed a young life, condemned his family and yours to a lifetime of pain and despair.”...

Muniz, along with co-defendants Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, 25, Elvin Garcia, 25, were each hit with a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Nineteen-year-old co-defendant Manuel Rivera was sentenced to 23 years to life behind bars....

Guzman-Feliz’s devastated parents kept their composure throughout the morning’s proceedings. In victim impact statements, read in unwavering Spanish, they let the courtroom know the depth of their unending grief....

In June — less than a week before the one-year anniversary of the vicious murder — a jury convicted the five Trinitarios gang members on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, second degree conspiracy and second-degree gang assault.

Eight other defendants in the case are still awaiting trial."

2 more defendants prep for trial in 'Junior' death case (with clip)

Oct 22, 2019

"Less than two weeks after gang members were handed life sentences in the murder of Bronx teen Lesandro "Junior" Guzman Feliz, two more defendants are now preparing for trial.

Frederick Then and Diego Suero had their pre-trial on Tuesday. They are believed to have called the shots that led to Junior's murder.

Both are charged in the 2018 fatal stabbing. Neither of the defendants were captured on video stabbing Junior, but Suero was arrested for allegedly ordering the hit on a rival gang member the night prosecutors say Junior was mistakenly targeted.

"You were not in the camera, you were not in the scene, but yet the scene came through because of the orders from you," said Junior supporter Yvette Rodriguez.....

Six others are charged in the case and are also awaiting trial."
