It also then makes me think that the searching last year only yielded remains that were not buried or buried and then exposed from natural causes: weather, animals etc. There could be many more victims buried in that area.

thats a good point. If they were buried deep enough that fbi heat signature camera probably wouldn't pick it up either.

I'm glad the police are thinking it's one killer. The theory that he has been tweaking his MO sounds more reasonable and gives the police more to work with.
I agree about the pattern, he's going from more work to more lazy. If SG is related it could have been that he just got really cocky.

heat signature only works for a limited time, I think by the time that technology was used to search, that opportunity may have already passed. I also wonder if the heat signature approach would work if you buried the body parts in sealed (tied) contractor grade garbage bags. no bugs, no air, no heat? I dunno.

I can tell you I am fairly certain that I could hide a body in that area that no one could find, fbi included. The roots of the reeds in the marsh form a cake like layer of mud and dirt that doesn't erode away like the sand. sometimes shelves form, and you could find a pocket under the shelf to stuff something in that would be under mud, and in water but stuck in place. I don't think odor or temperature could be detected in such a place. And being that it is State Park territory, the SK would assume no one would be digging around there anytime soon. Brings to mind someones (guy in my profile pic) strong interest in fighting the attempts at development in the area.

I dont know if the SK would go that far though.

yes, I do, but i may not have time to scan it for you anytime soon.
are you really interested in that article or are you trying to verify that I am not a creeper who saved the article from 1996 for a reason  ?
(queue bad theremin music)

I wish i had that kind of cunning, but no, I"m not that skilled! And while some may say the SK is likely to be intelligent, I doubt he has the type of intelligence or level of sophistication to make jokes about theremin music, so no, I don't suspect you....! (Plus I pretty much agree with your take on this whole thing with regard to CPH.)

I mention F.I a fair bit. I love it there (that's part of what freaks me out so much about this whole thing - it's all waaaay too close to a place I adore.) I've always sort of leaned towards DP in terms of where I'd like to buy a place & know it's had a lot of issues with beach erosion and that FI in general has been devastated by summer storms a few times, but the Casino falling into the ocean is news to me and kind of shocking! (It's kind of big...that's a pretty bad storm!) I guess it was rebuilt?! But then again I wasn't aware of that huge storm at all - I wasn't living here then. Finding out about the discovery of the legs put a bit of a damper on my interest in potentially buying in DP, and now hearing that the casino could go into the ocean doesn't exactly help! (No matter which way you flip it that clipping is not a realtor's friend!) Anyhow, I was just curious (albeit not curious or motivated enough to go looking all over the internet for the info! Well, I did look a bit actually but didn't find anything.)

Mind you - now that you mention it..it actually would have been a reasonable thing to ask for the reason you suggested, wouldn't it?! (Now I REALLY want to see it, haha!)

I keep hearing about postings on the LISK site...is that a reference to the "e-mail" section of longislandserialkiller.com? Because i looked at that and it's really difficult to read through. It's not user friendly! i don't think I have the patience! Is that what everyone keeps referring to? Is it worth taking the time to read through (oh who am I kidding, it's way too annoying to even try!)

<snip>

Unless the human remains were somehow devoid of moisture, placing them in any grade garbage bag should result in heat production for a longer period of time than if the remains are placed in burlap.

Maybe that's why the SK switched up to burlap?

JMO

ETA: I agree that in these cases "by the time that technology was used to search, that opportunity may have already passed". I don't know what time difference might apply to the two different methods, but had there been more recent remains placed, the bag method MIGHT have resulted in locating remains a bit earlier than the burlap method.

Yep. That's pretty much the way it is here.

Btw, as an aside. I recently had the opportunity to speak with someone who provides expert witness testimony in scene related homicides. I ran my outlier theory by him to see what he thought. He seemed to think it had validity. Wrt where they were abducted and possibly even kept/murdered? From a geo-profiling pov, I'm leaning toward the warehouse district in Massapequa.

I'm interested in what the 'warehouse district' is. Knowing the area very well from my past, you have two areas this might be. Just east of 27 (sunrise highway) and just west of county line road by the LIRR tracks. Clocks Blvd I believe (east massapequa) - This is very close to those Massapequa hotels mentioned, like walking distance. OR. Over east of 107 (Hicksville rd) by the LIRR tracks and 27 (sunrise highway). Parallel to Sunrise highway. Brooklyn ave I believe.

yes that is what they are referring to and no you should not bother, it is cyber-vomit

The LISK site isn't very user friendly. There are some bright people on there, but also a few people who are completely insane.

Truth, you might like it there. There's a guy who also is a hard core believer that Hackett did it.

btw, Flukeyou is claiming on LISK that detectives arrested someone leaving Oak Beach, guns drawn.

That's a bit harsh, im simply trying to understand your logic? Maybe you are from another country and without knowing the context of your statements they are difficult to understand. I don't understand how you got from talking about the racial implications of the phrase half-breed to a dog reference. Moreover you were defending the use of the term half-breed, but connecting it to dogs is now a completely different direction. So, sorry you confuse me. No one on the internet has to reveal their real identities, im just feeling at a loss because I'm confused by you and am struggling to determine the context. I could be wrong but I think I remember you telling me you didn't live in N. America? The Land Sub doesn't fly and I don't follow people in it anyway....

Go ahead and sue me  lol

I think there was some earlier speculation that there is a dog fighting ring connection to the murders. I may be mistaken, though.

Well if he was making that connection then, well....i dunno, i still don't understand.

I wish I had a van like yours. I'd be hunting down LISK myself too. There are things that people are passionate about and there's nothing wrong with it.
Actually, I'm heading back to NY and gonna go by Oak Beach and Gilgo Beach.

As long as you are not LISK, keep doing what you do.

They flew two cameras over the barrier island earlier this year. The first one was probably a visible/infrared camera which is capable of picking up heat signatures as well as high definition pictures. These cameras are very advanced. While commercial cameras are only up to a maximum of 25 megapixels, these advanced reconnaissance cameras can go up to 81 megapixels and probably even higher these days. So the pictures are very clear. Much clearer that you would see on Google Earth or Bing Maps. And you can keep zooming in and zooming in without losing much clarity.

The second camera that they flew was probably a hyperspectral camera. This camera takes a "chemical signature" of the landscape. It works very much the same way that you would analyze chemicals in a liquid sample or a blood sample. It uses the wavelengths of light to determine which chemicals are present. And the decomposition process of a human body puts out a chemical (I am not sure which specific chemical) which this hyperspectral camera can detect and quantify.

And it really doesn't matter if the body is buried. because the chemicals will still be released from the body and migrate through the soil and escape into the air. Certain soil types, such as clay, may impede the release of the vapors. However, on the south shore of Long Island, the soil is primarily a sandy loam and vapors would pass through that relatively easily.

When they searched Captree Island this past June, it was likely because of the hits they received from the second camera. But they probably turned out to be decaying fowl or other animals such as fox, racoons, possum, etc.

Here's a good article on the technology:

And Larry David thought that was his invention!

Apologies if this has been discussed before:

Coletti on when he saw last saw MP. Where did MP go in Oak Beach that neither Coletti nor his wife saw MP come back out the gate, even while LE was there?

from:
http://jjfieldnotes.blogspot.com/

“Toward Anchor Way. That house right there?” I ask.

“Yeah but that house wasn’t there then. There was a little bungalow,” he says.

“And he took off after her. And did u ever see Brewer?” I ask.

“No.”

“Anyone else after that? It was just him? An Asian guy,” I ask.

“Yeah. So what I did I ran back up here and I told my wife…”

Here a car drives slowly by and Coletti stops talking.

“Anyone we should be concerned about?” asks Sandy.

“No, that’s just the neighbors coming home from work,” he says. “So I told my wife – she was downstairs here. I said stay here and watch for anyone else coming down the street. I’m going down to let the police in. And I waited for the police and I opened up the gate so they could get in and I told ‘em the direction she went in.”

“About how long was that after you last saw her?”

“About 45 minutes,” he responds.

“Wow,” I say.

“And that was the direction of Hackett’s house wasn’t it - over there that way?” asks Sandy.

“Yeah,” responds Coletti.

“And you never saw Michael Pak’s SUV again?” I ask.

“No,” he responds.
