But how would that work in like real life? Like city workers needing to get in from the street?

I guess prison guard would have to open it but probably no reason for town workers to access it.

— The president of New York State Correctional Lieutenants believes staffing issues contributed to Saturday's escape from Clinton Correctional Facility.

Tad A. Levac told the Press-Republican that he has been pressing the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision for a year to add a field lieutenant at the Dannemora prison.

"We have a watch commander up front, but there are 3,000 inmates there, and we need a field lieutenant out back to supervise, because of the violence," Levac said.

Officers are stationed in the towers that overlook the grounds, "but they are not all manned at midnight,"

"We have lots of young officers coming in," he said. "They need that supervision."

"This doesn't sound like it happened on a whim," she said. "They could have been planning this for a year."

"The mood is one of great concern, obviously," she said.

"They are putting in a long, stressful day, but the No. 1 priority is to keep the community safe and get these guys back in prison."

The maximum-security prison where two killers pulled off a "Shawshank Redemption"-style escape has a reputation for brutality that belies the reform-minded ideals it was founded upon when it opened on an Adirondack mountainside in 1845.

"That reform mindset didn't last," ......."Within a decade, Dannemora was using a dungeon for solitary confinement, as well as a chair bath, which was basically waterboarding.

Today, nearly two centuries later, the 3,000-inmate prison retains an infamous reputation for brutality that ranks it among the worst in the New York state prison system.

A 2014 report .....found Clinton Correctional Facility is a place where there is little oversight, guards regularly beat inmates and racial tension festers between prisoners and corrections officers.

The report found that while 63 percent of inmates statewide are locked up for violent crimes, at Clinton, that figure is about 90 percent.

Any inmate who might have heard David Sweat and Richard Matt sawing through their steel cell walls with power tools wouldn't dream of saying anything, due to a culture of violence and fear that dictates a strict code of silence.

The facility itself is massive, O'Donnell said, with dank, dark cell blocks and facilities that are great distances away from one another, ill-equipped for full security camera coverage.

. At one time there was a ski jump for inmate use. There was a tuberculosis hospital and an insane asylum, which have been converted to other uses.

A review Monday of state records shows at least a dozen open contracts for construction work at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, Clinton County,

No one had ever escaped from the maximum-security unit since it was opened in 1865

They had at least six hours on the run before prison officials noticed they were missing early Saturday morning.

In 2011, Matt received a prison disciplinary charge for smuggling, tattooing and false information and was sent for 30 days to a special housing unit with loss of recreation, package and phone privileges

He also has a 1986 conviction for criminal possession of a forged instrument and escape following his breakout from the Erie County facility.

His prison disciplinary run-ins came last September when he was charged with interference and harassment; there were no further details

Matt was transferred to Clinton in 2008; Sweat arrived at Clinton in 2003.

investigators are looking into whether outside contractors or the contractors' employees had any connection to the escapees.

Who asked earlier why would they want to be hungry out in the woods?

tried to add this quote to my most recent post with article link but this website isnt' letting me edit posts lately, it just shows a grey box and a "reason for editing" field but nothing else.

"But authorities expanded the search after investigators learned that the inmates had talked before last weekend's breakout about going to neighboring Vermont."

I hadn't read before exactly what made them think they would go to VT. So that's why.

BBM Ummmhmmmm. I'll bet they did. While actually planning to head as far from Vermont as possible.

INCIDENT REPORT

An incident report regarding Mitchell and Sweat had been filed a year ago, Wylie said.

"They were separated temporarily," he said, so they were not both on the same shift in the tailor shop.

But the DA's Office was never notified about that, he said, because the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision did not deem that it rose to the level of requiring further action.

"It was handled in-house," Wylie said.

I may be taking things wrong with this report, but just about everything about the highlights of the report makes me cringe.

"They were separated temporarily,"
-Ok, so just temporarily? Like let them back together after a few days?

"did not deem that it rose to the level of requiring further action."
-Surely not. Getting them back together will take care of needing future action.

"It was handled in-house,"
-Yeah, we can tell it was. Nice job.

I know hind sight is 20-20 but good grief. I agree with another poster that heads are going to roll in that prison admin. Or i at least hope so.

Life in the sleepy hamlets and towns shadowed by the Adirondack Mountains has been transformed by incessant rumors, roadblocks, buzzing helicopters, troopers in schools, residents under lockdown and the invasion of a small army of law enforcement officers.

"It's like a military state," said Steve Lashway, who runs a meat market and deli in Dannemora.

Thomas LaSalle, 31, said he has been told to stay locked in his house as the manhunt continues. Some residents could only leave their homes with a state police escort. Armored vehicles drive by now and then.

In the rain overnight, groups of officers stood guard every 100 feet, LaSalle said.

I got the shakes," he said. "It's a lot of excitement. It's like a lockdown."

A state trooper had stood guard at every school, but on Thursday classes were canceled. Bus drivers had waited for children who wanted to remain inside their homes until buses arrived.

"Life has been insane," Lashway told CNN on Thursday. "We have ... officers on every corner with shotguns, and there are roadblocks up everywhere." Rumors about the fugitives' whereabouts were rampant.

. "Just about every day, somebody comes into the shop and says, 'They've got 'em. They've got 'em.' But nope, they don't. The next day same thing."
"
The notorious Mafioso Charles "Lucky" Luciano did 10 years there before being deported to Italy.

Robert Chambers, the so-called preppy murderer, was transferred there after committing infractions at another prison.

"We're very concerned. Everyone who has a dog that barks at night, 'Is it an animal or are they here?'"

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said investigators are also "talking to several people who may have facilitated the escape."

Cuomo warned that the law will come down hard on those in the prison system who cross the line.

"If you do it, you will be convicted, and then you'll be on the other side of the prison that you've been policing, and that is not a pleasant place to be," he said.

Law enforcement officers walking an arm's length apart were conducting a grid search through a cordoned-off area consisting of mud, woods, thick underbrush and several houses,

Would have been priceless to see their faces when they popped out and their ride wasn't there. All their eggs were in Tilly's basket.

I love that part of it. All their months of hard work and meticulous planning up in smoke because 'ol Tilly chickened out.

They will throw the biggest book they can find at her even if no one ends up hurt. Have to make an example of her. She may think they'll go easy because she's being cooperative but they're just screwing with her to get whatever they can. Heads will roll at that prison as well.

Today on CNN they were showing video of the guards standing at the tower station with riffles and DH started laughing so hard then said what's he gonna do with the riffle they crawled right past the tower, just sit down. Agree about heads rolling. The warden has got to be nervous. Jmo

ciao

I have no clue about their protocol with tools. I don't think he was knowingly involved either, but do believe mom could have used his tools or his knowledge to help the prisoners.

Admittedly my sense of humor is on par with a 13-year-old boy, but please tell me I'm not the only one snickering every time the word "tool" is used.

Nah, don't think they will ever make the "honor row <roll>" again either. Seriously, how do you torture and kill someone, and get on a honor row-roll wtfever. Then you get to go sew with Tillie :happydance::facepalm::thinking:.

"Sewing with Tillie" New Reality Show? Anybody???

Did prison worker have affairs with BOTH 'Shawshank' escapees? Grandmother, 51, was 'investigated over her "inappropriate relationship" with David Sweat just months before she fell in love with older inmate'

Good lord! The sympathizers will be coming out of the woodwork with excuses for this woman. At least she saved her own life imo once she drove away with them she would have been killed. Jmo all the planning no planB I'd she didn't show up?

ciao

Kinda funny - if they dont like the outdoors, one would think they might have checked the weather prior to departure! I assume if they dont like the outdoors swimming is not on their list either HA!

I have a feeling we just may find out that everything F44cked up on them from the beginning -, no ride, tsunami, broken ankle, pulled back - I have a feeling they shall be snug as a bug , warm and dry in some jail cell today!!

As far as these reports that this guy was genius......................................

They can come over to my house, I'll hide them! I'll dig a deep hole, they can jump in and I'll cover it up with cement. Nobody will ever find them!

Well I sure wouldn't want to be Tillie right now, LE not happy with you, 2 fugitives definitely not happy with you, Your Husband really not happy with you. Lordy!

Not to mention her employers (taxpayers), or the whole United State Public!!!

Maybe Sweat was initially supposed to be the romeo, but wasn't smooth in his manipulation and got busted, so dreamboat Matt assumed the job of smooth manipulation. JMO Just trying to picture this. LOL

"Dreamboat Matt" :giggle: There are a lot of good posts in this thread.

I'm catching up now! Hilarious! :hilarious: Y'all be doin' me proud. *sniff

It is nice to have a thread where everyone's sense of humor is appreciated. This one isn't about child kidnappers, molesters or child murderers - missing people so it is a little lighter. Exhaustion will do this to you!!
