Fuselage of missing plane found in Lake Erie, reports say
Crews scouring the lake found what appeared to be parts of the plane's fuselage as the search entered its eighth day, WOIO reported, citing unidentified sources.
On social media, Cleveland officials working to recover the plane said that despite some media reports, divers had not found an "intact fuselage."

[h=1]UPDATED: Search for missing plane takes divers to bottom of Lake Erie[/h]
The Flemings’ relatives have scheduled calling hours Sunday afternoon and a memorial service for Monday morning at a church in Canfield, near Youngstown. A second memorial is planned Tuesday afternoon at a church in Delaware, north of Columbus.

The families of Fleming and his wife issued a statement thanking supporters for their concern and kindness. It read: “The families are touched by the tremendous outpouring of support and continue to be grateful to all the agencies and individuals who have aided in the search and recovery efforts, now in the capable hands of the City of Cleveland.”

It takes very special people to do this work, hope they all keep safe and have a successful, if sad mission today, imo.

Beacon transmissions helped narrow the search area. But officials say the divers have only a few inches of visibility, so they’ll move slowly as they feel around the lake bottom.

The water search resumed Friday in extremely cold weather. Authorities say they’re looking for debris by air and along the shore as weather permits.

Interestingly, there was a deadly crash in Utah, January 2016... they were only 2-1/2 minutes into the flight... also a Cessna Citation 525.

In the recording you can hear Baker is having mechanical issues and is requesting to fly at a higher altitude just before the communication is lost with Air Traffic Controllers.

Baker, 59, and his wife, Dawn Elizabeth Hunter, 55, died when their 1999 Cessna Citation 525 crashed in a field near Cedar Fort just two-and-a-half minutes after taken off from Salt Lake International Airport.

Sadly, its the worst possible time of year for conducting a search in Lake Erie. Cold temperatures, with one storm front after another passing through is typical weather here in January and February. The search area is in relatively shallow water near the breakwall, so wave action and currents keep sediment stirred up and visibility very low. Kudos to those divers and other rescue workers, it's not easy.

Sadly, this accident reminds me of a similar one a few years ago

http://www.kansascity.com/news/state/kansas/article4172498.html

Interestingly, there was a deadly crash in Utah, January 2016... they were only 2-1/2 minutes into the flight... also a Cessna Citation 525.

In the recording you can hear Baker is having mechanical issues and is requesting to fly at a higher altitude just before the communication is lost with Air Traffic Controllers.

Baker, 59, and his wife, Dawn Elizabeth Hunter, 55, died when their 1999 Cessna Citation 525 crashed in a field near Cedar Fort just two-and-a-half minutes after taken off from Salt Lake International Airport.

ww.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3406011/Tragedy-prominent-commercial-real-estate-company-owner-jewelry-designer-wife-identified-victims-plane-crash-rural-Utah.html

Yes both those do sound like similar type accidents.

The Cessna one is really concerning because it seems there was some sort of system failure with the FMS which is a main flight management system. When that thing has trouble it gets serious fast. Included some information below from that accident.

"NTSB noted that air traffic control tower data "indicated that shortly after takeoff and while proceeding southbound, the pilot reported that he had experienced a Flight Management System failure, and that he needed to fly straight and climb while he tried to program the backup FMS.""

http://www.sltrib.com/home/3494737-155/preliminary-report-ntsb-says-aircraft-broke

The potential for icing sounds like it could have contributed to that accident and maybe icing was a contributing factor in the Lake Erie accident.

From other accidents we have learned that icing can cause serious issues for planes. For one it changes the wing's ability to create lift. And not just because of weight of the ice. What can happen is the ice buildup can make the wing physically different.

If you think about a nice smooth wing and then imagine what the wing would look like with sheets of ice building up on top of it in irregular forms. Some ice could buildup thicker in some spots and not others which would make the wing not be smooth at all. At a minimum it would begin to make the aircraft tougher to fly and worse than that it could cause the wing to lose ability to create lift. Especially if the ice buildup is at the leading edge of the wing where air first hits the wing. Imagine a few irregular chunks of ice sitting along that leading edge and it is easy to understand it is not a good thing to happen.

As a pilot tries to de-ice the plane with fluids then what could happen is chunks could start to come off in certain spots on the wing and not others. Making for an irregular wing which I am sure would not be helpful in flying.

A lot of accidents end up being a cascading sequence of events that contribute to the accident. The issue could start with icing issues and then that in turn could cause a pilot to make some decisions which begin to compound issues. For instance if a pilot is having trouble with the plane due to icing then the pilot may decide to climb too rapidly to get out of the ice building up. If decisions are made in a panic mode then some bad decisions could be made.

Ive always wondered about airlines de-icing capabilities and it seems like it is trying to put a bandaid on a gaping wound. Most people have probably seen footage of a plane at an airport spraying de-icing fluids on a plane before a flight. But if that plane then takes off and has to travel through more ice and sleet then I have to wonder how effective the in-flight de-icing systems really works.

Most people have tried to scrape ice off their car windshield and know how difficult it is. It seems to me that de-icing fluids are such a small step. I think major large planes even have "shaker" type systems if I am not mistaken that is designed to try to break off the sheets of ice after deicing fluids are used. Not sure if all planes have those shaker systems or just certain planes.

I do think most planes have the de-icing fluids that can be sprayed during the flight itself. Which again seems so futile to me. Its like trying to spray your windshield washer fluid which has antifreeze in it onto your windshield during an ice storm or snowstorm and we know how futile that can be sometimes.

Its nothing short of a miracle to me how planes can effectively control most icing conditions in todays air travel. It seems like we would have much more problems with ice than we actually do. I am always amazed by that and I wonder how much the de-icing is really helping or is it more of a feel good thing for passengers and its just that planes can miraculously keep flying most of the time even with ice on their wings.

It will be interesting to get the final reports from NTSB about the Lake Erie accident. I hope the NTSB can find out for sure the sequence of events and know what happened. It helps save more lives in the future when other pilots can learn what happened.

I am pretty sure in the flight pilots communities they most likely watch and read all about any accident so they learn from them and learn how to avoid what they can control.

CLEVELAND (AP/WCMH) January 9, 2017 – A next step in search efforts that resumed Monday in Lake Erie for a plane carrying six people that disappeared days ago will be bringing up debris spotted on the lake bottom.

According to the City of Cleveland, divers and crews started extracting debris from the water around 1:30pm. Investigators are carefully inspecting the removed items.

At first look, officials say the larger pieces appear to be portions of the fuselage. Seats that appear to belong to the aircraft were also recovered
