Family evidently knew him for 20 years, knew he had had drug problems. But they allegedly thought he had turned over a new leaf. At least til the most recent drug and prostitution chares, then they allegedly told the teen that he couldn't hang out with the guy now. But the teen snuck out and hung with him anyway. Teens dad says the teen was threatened that if he didn't help him and his family would be punished.

Look, I just need to be straight with everyone here, I'm sure some of you may have or know someone who beat an addiction and came out shining on the other side...but in my experience with friends and family members with either drug or alcohol addictions YOU JUST CAN'T TRUST THEM AS FAR AS YOU CAN THROW THEM. They are master manipulators and they tell you what you need to hear to shut you up. The addiction will always come first in their life and anyone or anything that gets in the way of their addiction is the enemy. Maybe a small percentage of them has gotten clean and stayed clean, but i stand by my statements about the majority of them. Sorry in advance if I offended anyone by my opinion.

This is so sad ! Those poor men were interviewing for a possible job offer; my point is, they were trying to better their lives---not looking for the alleged criminals to give them a handout.
BTW, I don't think at this point , that the 16 yr-old is a scared little boy. He may be frightened of the trouble he's in, though. The parents of these alleged perps need to wake up !!!!
Sorry to rant; jmo as always.

I'm sorry, but he is NOT a 'little boy.' He's almost an adult and he knows right from wrong. IF this had all happened in one day, I could believe he was possible scared into keeping quiet. But this was FOUR occasions. He had enough time to tell someone. He didn't have to keep going back.

I don't have any sympathy for either one of these people. This kid is just 'scared,' because he got caught and doesn't want to go to prison. But too bad. You do the crime,...........you do the time.

Now as for this Beasley. Wonder if he has any victims in Texas? To be sentenced to 40 years for a burglary and GTA? Seems pretty stiff. Course, MOST of it was on parole.

Teen in Craigslist case is ‘scared little boy’

Beasley has a criminal record dating to the 1980s. He was convicted in Texas of burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in 1985, sentenced to a 40-year prison sentence and placed on parole for 34 years in 1989. Previous charges in Ohio include aggravated menacing, tampering with evidence, possession of criminal tools and illegal cultivation of marijuana, court records show.

Following Beasley’s return to Akron in 2003, he ran a halfway house, helped deliver food to the poor and vouched for fellow offenders, telling judges they had changed their ways, the Akron Beacon Journal reported over the weekend.

Police say the halfway house was a front for prostitution

Beasley’s mother has said that her son had taken the boy to The Chapel, an Akron megachurch, since he was 7 or 8 years old, according to WEWS-TV of Cleveland, and that they did volunteer work together, such as delivering food to the needy.

“The most I can say is, this is just a big shock to us,” Carol Beasley has said. “I pray it’s some other person and not him.”

A church spokeswoman said Beasley had no involvement with youth activities at the church and that while his mother had long attended services, Beasley showed up only sporadically.

The impression I am getting from the articles is that the parents are subtly trying to blame each other's kid. Rafferty's father has come right out and said that his kid wasn't capable of masterminding this crime. The mother of Beasley just keeps talking about how Beasley was religous and into helping people. And how he "mentored" the kid. She also seems to throw it into the Rafferty's faces about how they were divorced, as she seems to keep mentioning it.

While I don't believe that the kid was the mastermind, I also don't believe he was as naive as his parents seem to believe he is. I think he may still be snowing them. And why not? Didn't his "mentor" provide the role model for that? Beasley was reportedly acting chaplain, 'helping' people and aiding the homeless on one hand, and committing drug crimes and running prostitution through the halfway house at the same time. So perhaps he either taught or provided the role model for Rafferty to show his parents one face, all the while he is living another way.

The father keeps talking about how he introduced the kid to Beasley, acts like he feels guilty about that. But from other reports the kid was 6 years old when he first met Beasley. That was 10 years ago. 10 years to learn what Beasley was about and learn about his criminal history and lifestyle. I would think the guilt wouldn't be in introducing them, the guilt would be in allowing them to continue to associate.

This is based entirely on conjecture with maybe just a little experience.

First ignore the crime for a bit and what do we have? We have a single man, involved in the criminal element, who 'befriended' a child at the age of 6-7. Then later when his parents became divorced, he began 'mentoring' the child and spending a lot of time with him. Anyone else wondering anything here?

What else do we usually see with this picture? Single guy, not adverse to breaking laws. Making friends with and more importantly spending a lot of time with a child. Child's parents divorce, maybe making a troubled and/or vulnerable child.

The child begins participating in the mentor's life, at least we know he is helping hand out food to the homeless. They spend a lot of time together.

I'm thinking perhaps the child was groomed then raped and then maybe it developed into a more predatory relationship???? Anyone else think this could be possible?

16 is certainly more than old enough for "scared little boy" to be tried as an adult. Malvo was 17.

Ohio Craigslist Murders: Teen Suspect Not Eligible for Death Penalty

“He was misled by somebody who he extremely trusted and somebody that was supposed to be a mentor for him, and I think probably at the very end he had an idea and was threatened, and that he was in fear for his life and the life of his sister and the life of his mom, and possibly me, too."

snip....."He's charismatic, he's a nice guy, he's done a lot of good. He's helped a lot of people through the religion,” Michael Rafferty said referring to Beasley. The latter presented himself as a pastor.

"Obviously, he's got a dark side. He's a little bit of a scam artist. He tries to stretch things a little further than he can as far as the legal end of it, but nothing dangerous.

"Nothing horrible, that I knew of ... It seemed harmless."

‘Craigslist killings’ suspect is innocent of murders, says his mother

Yvette Rafferty says her son was exploited by his mentor, 52-year-old pastor Rich Beasley

Parents seem to be ramping it up today since Rafferty was in court. Incidentally in the articles posted above by the parents, Dad says he isn't that smart and is gullible, Mom says he is very smart.

I don't think that the "scared little boy" line is helping their son at all. Anyone find anything on the person they "think" is the unidentified victim? I can't find a missing person's report on him at all.

Ohio Churches Deny Craigslist Murder Suspect Is a Chaplain

snip...Two churches that Beasley was associated with denied Monday that the suspect was a chaplain.

"[Rich Beasley] wasn't sanctioned through The Chapel," Tammy Kennedy, the executive assistant to the senior and executive pastors of The Chapel in Akron, Ohio, told ABC News. "He had no involvement whatsoever with the youth activities."

"Rich's mother is a very faithful member of the chapel," Kennedy said. "However, the other two men attended randomly, sporadically."

snip....The Akron Bible Church in northern Ohio, which has also been connected to Beasley, also denied any direct link to him.
