Ken left me a message, wasn't able to talk to him this afternoon. The outcome of this hearing was that Lovrien decided to represent himself, and attorney Goody will only be there in an advisory capacity. Lovrien stated that he wanted a speedy trial, yet he wants to leisurely peruse the discovery documents, of which there are thousands of pages. So we'll see if we are still on for a January trial date...

Okay, so just got off the phone with Ken. Today's hearing sounds encouraging. Apparently the judge overseeing today's hearing was the trial judge Ramras, and he didn't recuse himself at Lovrien's request, so that motion literally struck out. Next, after firing both lawyers Simrin and Goody, and deciding to represent himself, Lovrien also tried to fire attorney Goody as a legal advisor. The judge refused to allow that (wise, so that he doesn't have ineffective counsel as a basis for appeal). Both judges Ramras and Albrecht- the female one- appear to be catching on to Lovrien's manuevers. They are getting fed up with his numerous delays and firing attorneys. Judge Ramras apparently read him the riot act for representing himself and told him they'd still hold the trial anyways. Lovrien appeared articulate and intelligent according to Ken, but still claimed that he needed a year or more to read 1,700 pages of discovery. Another reason to delay, which would also push back his 2nd trial. The judge and prosecution both seemed to recognize that my family has been waiting over 20 years for justice. The murder charges (and dismemberment in the other case) in both cases will take priority over the felon in charge of a gun possession charges. So it seems like they will grant him the motion to dismiss the DNA hearing on 1/4/24, but it's unlikely he will prevail on the motion, and for now they want to proceed with the scheduled trial date this coming January.
