Why is the answer more often about meet the shooter and fight back with a gun, not prevent the shooter from getting a gun and arriving on the scene with it in the first place?

We've resigned to letting these cowards show up wherever they want, whenever they want, and carrying the weapons of their choice.

Sigh.

Yeah. I assume all the gangbangers that are shooting each other all the time have guns. Don't care about collateral damage. Of course, they don't obtain their weapons legally. Still, having a weapon for self-defense from those guys would be useless in the cases where their drive-by bullets go into a wall or window and randomly kill some innocent person that just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Which could be said of the innocent people killed yesterday at UCC, as well.

This thread is veering way off the rails.

TOPIC: UMPQUA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SHOOTING

:trainwreck:

To direct back to topic, I saw a headline scroll that said the hospital was doing a pressed on the victims? Was this the same press conference from earlier?

The student and Army veteran who witnesses say charged the shooter at a community college in Oregon is alert and awake at the hospital as he recovers.
Chris Mintz, 30, was shot seven times during the Thursday rampage, but he says his main concern is about the others who were injured.
"I just hope that everyone else is OK," he told ABC News this morning.
"I'm just worried about everyone else.”

At least one armed student was on campus but chose not to intervene

John Parker Jr., a student at Umpqua Community College and a concealed handgun carrier, was studying with his fellow military veterans when the gunman opened fire, but they chose not to get involved.

Well, there you go. Here is the video.

Oh, lovely girl:

Rebecka Carnes, 18, has been identified by her stepfather as a victim in the Oregon college massacre. Carnes was studying to become a dental hygienist at the school

Carnes was a star softball player in high school. She had just began classes at UCC on September 28

In the first chaotic hours after the shooting, Rebecka's mother, Jessica Chandler, spoke to ABC News, saying she was worried for her daughter because she didn't know where she was. She later learned from Carnes’ friend that that student was taken to a hospital.
When asked what she would say to her daughter, Chandler said, ‘I would tell her that I love her, and I want her in my arms.’

Oh my gosh, this breaks my heart. THIS is what makes it "real". I don't think anyone can read those words from her mama without tearing up.

I'm so sorry this happened to you Rebecka. My prayers are with you and your family. We need to do more as a society to stop these horrific shooting.

This article talks about him possibly having aspergers, and it makes me so sad for all the people living with it who would never hurt a fly but get stigmatized by these individuals.

ITA. This infuriates me. Asperger's does not = unhinged killer.

And yet when some loon does this sort of thing with an easily accessible arsenal, it must be Asperger's and not because of mental illness.

This is not to say he did not have BOTH, but ASD/ADHD are not indicators of homicidal behaviors and that kind of implication on the parts of MSM needs to stop.

Forget the 26-year-old zero who murdered 10 innocents at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning.
The one to remember is 30-year-old Chris Mintz, the student and Army vet who was shot at least five times while charging straight at the gunman in an effort to save others.
Mintz did so on the sixth birthday of his son, Tyrik.
“It’s my son’s birthday, it’s my son’s birthday,” he was heard saying as he lay wounded.
When word of Mintz’s heroism reached his kin in his native North Carolina, his cousin Derek Bourgeois was hardly surprised.
“It sounds like something he would do,” Bourgeois said.

Yes...this is Chris Mintz. I just thought I would repost Gitana's beautiful sentiments.

My goodness. Its almost like he is a Superhero. He seems to be a very special person. His family must be proud.

Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, I have a stalker who had stalked me since I was 15, and who has physically attacked me. For me, that is what it takes to feel safe.

Good grief Dogface (I hate calling you that. LOL!) I had no idea what you'd been through. I'm so glad there are now anti-stalking laws (though I wish they had more bite, pun intended) and I hate to wish ill on anyone but I hope your stalker falls into Hades and soon. No one should have to live in such fear.

I can't believe the bios I am reading: an driven honor student studying to become a pediatric nurse, a 72 year old woman reinventing herself and helping others to study, a young father who finished rehab and had turned his life around... Such beautiful and promising lives. What an ache I feel in my heart. I don't think any one of us on this site is getting numb to these horrific tragedies.
