The fire was obviously devastating, but it appears that this wasn’t a total loss.

A lot of artwork was saved, and important areas of the building appear to be out of danger.

A couple hours ago, it appeared that there would be almost nothing left.

So a bit of good news.

That drone picture makes me think that everything inside is far gone. I think we only have the stone walls at this point. I can't believe this is actually happening, like this is actual real life. I am so sad.

It made me tear up to see. Very emotional. Horrible. I don't know how that could happen. No sprinklers I guess? Or maybe it was so intense those wouldn't have worked anyhow.

A Notre Dame cathedral priest has claimed that all precious artefacts and artwork have been saved from the historic building.

"Good news: all the works of art were saved. The treasure of the Cathedral is intact, the Crown of thorns, the Holy sacraments," Nicolas Delesalle tweeted.

I hope that's true, it would be doubly tragic if all that was lost too.

Going off flutes beautiful post, here are some images I took from what will be a year ago tomorrow. April, 16, 2018.

Oh that is really good news

Thank you for sharing them.

Prayers for everyone affected by this tragedy and especially for the locals in the area who have had their skyline changed.

After witnessing the impact of what happened in 911 when the NYC skyline was changed forever, what is very difficult for some to understand is your mind gets used to seeing a building such as Notre Dame and you get used to seeing it where it should be. Its just like a mountain that is always there. So when the spire and Notre Dame is no longer there, it causes a severe emotional toll on every local who walks by the site as well as people returning to the area they once knew.

Prayers for everyone as we adjust to a new normal. This is truly devastating in so many ways.

btw -I still cannot get used to seeing the New York skyline without the twin towers. When an old movie comes on with the towers still present, my mind nods an affirmative Yes, as that is the way it still should be.

Perth man who was evacuated could smell smoke but couldn’t see any fire during the tour.

Channel9 news.

Crazy to think some people will have left the cathedral today, gone for a quick coffee or meal, and come out to see it all in flames.

Oh so wonderful to hear!!! Was there in 2017 and 1994. Lit a candle for my late son in ‘17. There is no accurate description, it’s beauty and magnificence is beyond words.

Pope Francis issued a statement late on Monday expressing the Vatican’s “shock and sadness” at “the news of the terrible fire that devastated the Cathedral of Notre Dame, a symbol of Christianity in France and in the world.”

“We express closeness to the French Catholics and the people of Paris and we assure our prayers for the firemen and those who are doing everything possible to face this dramatic situation,” the statement read.

“I do not have a strong enough word to express the pain that I feel,” tweeted Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

Europe is full of historic structures that have been rebuilt following damage during both war and peacetime. But experts despaired that the loss to Notre Dame was incalculable and unrecoverable.

“It’s not just the medieval features,” tweeted Kate Wiles, a scholar at Kings’ College London. “It's a palimpsest of work and rework, and building and rebuilding, and we've lost all those layers. It's not just the 'original' masterpiece we're losing, but the culmination of some 900 years of history, which can't just be rebuilt.”

The spire that collapsed on Monday, for instance, is not an original component of the cathedral. It was added in the nineteenth century, when tastes veered toward a Gothic revival, by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. The gargoyles — immortalized in Victor Hugo’s classic novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” — were likewise added in the nineteenth century.

Yes, so sad. I heard a man interviewed on MSNBC earlier. He and his wife had just arrived in Paris and they went t5o the cathedral, to see what time the last tour began and they had just missed it.

They planned to go tomorrow morning and went to a cafe, and before they could even look at the menu, they saw the smoke coming out of the Cathredal ceiling.

Police Chief: Structure of Notre Dame Cathedral Saved From Massive Fire
The Paris Police Chief says the structure of Notre Dame Cathedral has been saved, and that the fire has stopped from spreading to the northern belfry.

The Paris prosecutors' office says investigators are treating the blaze that destroyed part of Notre Dame as an accident for now.

The prosecutors' office said late Monday they have ruled out arson in Monday's fire, including possible terror-related motives for starting the blaze.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he is treating the fire as a national emergency.

Notre Dame was constructed in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII and was completed in 1345. The cathedral is a world-wide Parisian icon and site of some of the most important moments in the history of France. Henry VI of England was crowned inside the cathedral in 1431 and Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France inside the cathedral in 1804.

It is not going to be able to be rebuilt in the same way it was. It is impossible, imo. Not trying to be negative, just being real.

We cannot do what the craftsman of that time did, with the resources they had. They used oak from 54 acres of Oak Trees to build the beams. That cannot happen again, as far as I can see.
