Don't be too comforted yet, South American extradition laws are convoluted, complicated, and not necessarily equally enforced. I looked through several links to post on this, but the links are just as difficult to decipher as the laws themselves. It seems that JVDS knows this as he seems to be traveling from one country to another quite quickly. He could have left Argentina for somewhere else by now.

I may be wrong, but IIRC when I was in Aruba, someone told me they send all
bad criminals to Holland, Netherlands. They only keep them for trial.

Chief of detectives Col. Miguel Canlla says police are seeking Joran van der Sloot in the Sunday killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel.

The girl's father, Ricardo Flores, says van der Sloot appears with her in video taken at a Lima casino early Sunday.

Police say they are seeking to confirm van der Sloot's identity with the Dutch Embassy. It refused to comment to The Associated Press.
