I am a little confused about winning large amounts of money at casino's. Is everyone who wins walking around with a pocket full of cash or do the casino's issue checks?

You can request a check -- and if you win above a certain amount, they will require you receive a check. In U.S. and Canadian Casinos, if you win $5,000, you will usually receive cash. Once, my husband won $12,800.00 and he asked for $800 in cash and the rest in check form.

However, in foreign countries (such as Peru) it may be harder to cash a check, especially if you are a foreigner, and I am not sure of the policies regarding cash vs. check. I have won $2,500 at times in a Casino and have received cash. I was paranoid about someone trying to rob me, but came and left with my husband. Unfortunately, this poor young lady was too trusting of Joran -- who may very well have seen her win the $5,000.00 or was with her when she won it.

I think I heard yesterday it is a 3 judge panel.

Makes me wonder how it works - are the standards 'beyond all reasonable doubt' at play like here in the US, or 2 out of 3 judges think he's guilty, or maybe there is a different criteria used. Should be interesting. moo

I agree! Dr. Robert Hare has been researching the psychopath for decades - his research is premiere, with excellent methodology. His book 'Without Conscience' is brilliant. He contends some babies are born lacking the ability to process emotions and that this occurs on a continuum explaining the 'office sociopath' right down to the murderous serial killer. Interesting reading - and he doesn't even find it necessary to blame mom. moo mho

Thanks, will write the name of that book down. Would love to read it.

Ugh, have to go back home where I don't have HLN. :( Will check back for updates.

What is it called when a person addicted to gambling sets it up so they're not allowed in the casino? I need that for Websleuths. Lots to do today, but nothing got done. :banghead:

ban me please?

(no!!!!!!)

How did the sentence of 35 years for the murder of Steph come about? That's almost light for for a brutal rape + murder + theft, IMO.

[I know he hasn't been tried or sentenced, but the news keeps throwing around the 35 year sentence.]

TIA

Greta continues her tirade against the FBI:

"UPDATE 1:50pm....just learned that Joran van der Sloot left Aruba on the afternoon of May 13 and flew to Peru via Columbia. Note that he had to go through customs and immigration......that would be a good place to arrest someone ..."

There is no smoking in our casinos - except for the Seminoles (American Indians) since the casino is on tribal land - its their rules. But the ones at the race tracks - nope - no smoking.

Walk in most Las Vegas casinos, cigarette smoke billows.

A news report last night quoted 25 to 35 years for murder - going by that.
Not sure 100 percent accurate.

I read a good bit on this yesterday..... googling all over, but I didn't save any links. What I do recall is that I kept reading that the Peruvian legal system is based generally on the Napoleonic Code -- meaning judical panels hear cases, instead of juries. I also recall reading that in Peru, once you are charged, you are presumed guilty and the burden of proof lies in proving your innocence.

I must say, that is yet another irony. The difference in international laws, that is. Karma...AGAIN.

Rape?

I do the local ones here. I've won $1200. and $800. (my two largest jackpots). The $800. was just a ticket that spit out of the machine and I cashed it at the window. The $1200. one I had to sign "tax" papers and they asked me how I wanted it. I took the cash and asked for an escort to my car. But I think you can "split" it - part cash part check - if its big enough. I think for the really big ones $10K and up - they give you a check.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it was all cash down there for the casino winnings.

The US is not nearly the cash based society most of the rest of the world is, in fact, in many places, checks are virtually non-existent, or, at the least, virtually unused.

And it's almost unheard of, in most places, to try to cash a check from anywhere other than the location it is from (as in trying to cash a US check in the Czech Republic or Chile or something).

Maybe for the very largest winnings it would be different, more like some sort of bank deposit or wiring of money and cash, but by and large, South America is similar to most of the rest of the world in being a much more cash based society.

I thought there was no bond in Peru and even if there is...............like they are really going to let him out on bond.............NOT..............This is Peru NOT Aruba! Let alone what a "seasoned" traveler he is!

If that hotel has cameras all over the place, after two weeks he knew that. This whole crime does not make sense. No sense at all.

I agree, but the murder probably happened in an out of control fit of rage. He wasn't thinking, just reacting. Joran then tried to figure out a way to cover his b**t.

As posted by another poster a couple of pages back the indictment they were working on out of Alabama is not a crime that is extraditable. I think they were either luring in him to a higher dollar amount that would have increased the charge, or lured him to a US property where he could be arrested.

He has been out an about for five years, they had no way to know he would murder a girl while they were working on this case. Perhaps them keeping tabs on him is part of the reason his escape didn't work.

I know this is a stupid question but do you think they gave him counterfeit money? He flipped out, knew they were going to arrest him, so he left and killed this girl on NH anniversary?
