I thought I heard or read (on here?) yesterday that she was raped with an object. That was someone's explanation for the blunt force trauma to her lower body or something.

eta - I have not been on here 24/7 since this latest episode started but I swear I am trying to keep up on my reading. Please forgive me if I missed something.

Main question though --- 35 years for murder?

I read someplace the xpresident of peru was given 6 years for something, i wonder what prison he will go too.

A poster was confused by the use of the word cervical. In this case it was used when speaking of an injury to the victim's neck.

I do remember reading that Flow. It was said a 'blunt force trauma to the cervix', IIRC. I have read other reports stating there was no sexual assault. I don't know what to think because the media is in a feeding frenzy right now and many of the reports are conflicting.

ETA thanks tiredofthis for clarifying. I didn't see your post before I posted.

If that hotel has cameras all over the place, after two weeks he knew that. This whole crime does not make sense. No sense at all.

There's obvious and then there's too obvious, and I'm wondering if this is starting to look a little too obvious.

At the very least there's:

hotel room was in his name
openly going in and out
cameras at hotel and casino

If they'd been hanging out would their dna be on each other (skin cells, maybe saliva)?

If he's guilty so be it, but if he's not who is? Could he have ticked off the wrong person? Could she have? Could her father have? Or could someone else have wanted her winnings?

Yesterday I felt sure he killed her. Today I'm not as sure.

I read a good bit on this yesterday..... googling all over, but I didn't save any links. What I do recall is that I kept reading that the Peruvian legal system is based generally on the Napoleonic Code -- meaning judical panels hear cases, instead of juries. I also recall reading that in Peru, once you are charged, you are presumed guilty and the burden of proof lies in proving your innocence.

I must say, that is yet another irony. The difference in international laws, that is. Karma...AGAIN.

Thanks to you for the research! :blowkiss: Yes - definitely karma!!

:blushing:

:blushing: That was me. Sorry. Cervical blunt force trauma I was thinking uterine cervix not cervical spine. I didn't read it in context.

AP video of van der Sloot being flown to Peru in a small plane.

I agree, but the murder probably happened in an out of control fit of rage. He wasn't thinking, just reacting. Joran then tried to figure out a way to cover his b**t.

Just jumping off your post tiredofthis. :)

First I was surprised at the brutality of the murder of Stephany (although we don't have all the details as of yet). My gut clenched up for her and for Natalee (and any other unknown victims). I had thought as did a few others that Beth was correct in what she thought about Natalee's death and that it was more than likely what we see called a soft kill. She was drugged, sexually assaulted and the suffocated (one of theories).

However, looking at these two young women that are what we could call known victims of Joran I'm not so sure anymore about a lot of conclusions that I had come to during Natalee's case.

I am still mulling over thoughts here so bear with me while I type out what is troubling me this morning please.

I do not think at this point in time that it can be assumed that the motive for Stephany's murder was money. I don't think the motive for Natalee's murder was sexual assault. (The only example that I can think of at this moment is Ted Bundy, even though we don't know that JVDS has murdered but two people---with men of that ilk it's about the hunt, the kill, the so called victory).

I think that it's possible that the game of getting these young ladies into his company (possible shared circumstances---using drugs on these two girls without their consent) Luring them away from a comfort zone. Faking them out that they were safe within his company and then turning on them to drop his mask and show the monster that lies beneath might have been motive.

The problem I have seen described with dealing with sociopaths that murder is that we can't understand why they do what they do unless we can get inside of their head. I'm just not sure at this time that we can assign the ordinary motives that we see everyday to JVDS.

Sorry for such a long post! I'm still trying to puzzle out all of this.

All of the above is JMHO and not supported by links.

And an interesting Newsweek story.

Stories like van der Sloot’s are increasingly common among the current post-teen generation that grew up on reality television and virtual realism. Think of suspected child-killer Casey Anthony and the study-abroad student-murderer Amanda Knox, for instance. Kids in big trouble share the same sense of life without consequences—and an obvious loss of their moral compass—when it comes to the gravity of the accusations against them. It’s as if they’ve been conditioned to believe that life can simply be reset like a video game if things start to go bad. Or maybe that fame—even infamy—is so intoxicating that they just want more.

Okay, I'm sorry my comment about the other stuff threw everybody off of the main question.

Why are they all saying 35 years for a murder? Is this standard penalty for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree murder in Peru?

I always thought that NH died in Joran's presence as a result of a lethal combination of drugs/alcohol, not necessarily given to her by Joran, and he panicked and disposed of her body. The news of the murder of Stephany with all circumstances pointing to Joren as her killer comes as quite a shock to me. I never imagined he was capable of such intentional and horrific brutality. Since NH's remains were never found, she could well have been killed in a similar manner. His whereabouts over the past 5 years needs to be tracked and compared to any unsolved murders of young women. He might indeed be a serial killer.

I had the impression that Natalee was quite inebriated when she went off with Joran, but that he definitely was the one who gave her the drug or drugs...just my impression, of course.

For those interested in the extortion attempt, the complaint does not make it clear but I have seen twice now, this information:

"Rodriguez pointed out the FBI is also charging van der Sloot with extortion after he allegedly accepted $250,000 to reveal the location of Natalee's body -- the information he provided turned out to be false, authorities say."

From CBS interview with Jug Twitty and Carol Standifer
