I could have sworn the early reports said the hotel had a COPY of his passport-not the original, but with the mixed up reporting, who knows.
I thought it was the casino who had the COPY of passport. I really think we are losing a whole lot in translation. But, it it's true that the hostel requires a hold of the passport, and Joran told the front desk to not disturb his girl or worry about cleaning up the room, and he prepaid another 14 days...then it would make sense that he wouldn't retrieve his passport from them, because they don't seem to have a clue that he was planning of fleeing Peru that fateful Sunday, May 30th.
