Attorneys deliver opening statements in the trial of Dylann Roof

"Opening statements in the federal trial of Dylann Roof began Wednesday with a dramatic account of the shooting at Emanuel AME Church in June 2015. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson first detailed the lives and personalities of the nine men and woman killed during the church’s weekly Bible study. As photos of each of the victims flashed across the screen in the courtroom, Roof sat in a gray-and-white striped prison jumpsuit, never once looking up from his lap. .."

'We are still in mourning': Charleston congregants prepare for Dylann Roof trial

"The procession moved slowly along the aisles, singing a capella as it shuffled towards the altar. The choir, dressed in maroon and black robes, were followed by the ushers with their red bow ties and white gloves. At the rear were the ministers dressed in white and gold.

Sunday communion at the Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston had begun in a sombre mood.

With his head bowed, the Rev Edward Ducree led the morning prayer. “We pray especially this morning for those who are down with heavy burdens,” he said, as an organist played a quiet accompaniment. “We pray for those who are still in pain for the horrific events that happened here a little over a year ago, and we pray for this congregation for indeed we are still in mourning.”...

Researchers at the University of South Carolina who examined race relations in the state a year after the mass shooting found only 30.9% of black South Carolinians supported the death penalty for Roof, compared with 64% of white residents. A number of the victims’ family members have indicated they would rather see the 22-year-old face life in prison, while the AME church itself is officially opposed to the death penalty....

yes, thank you YESorNO for your steadfast dedication to bringing the tweets and other tidbits here. It is heartbreaking but so important on many levels. Thank you.

The mother of victim Tywanza Sanders gave a touching, heartfelt account of her son's death:

http://nbc24.com/news/nation-world/federal-hate-crimes-trial-for-dylann-roof-set-to-begin-today
Sanders watched her son die.
"And we watched him take his last breath. I watched my son come in this world. And I watched him leave this world," she said.

Then the dead victim apparently came back to life, so another touching, heartfelt account of the victim's death could be offered up, in case you didn't get the message the first time:

http://nbc24.com/news/nation-world/federal-hate-crimes-trial-for-dylann-roof-set-to-begin-today
Sgt. John Lites told jurors he leaned down and held Tywanza Sanders' hand as the young poet-barber passed away. He squeezes, smiled, and was gone, Lites said.

This defendant really needs a good defense lawyer, but his defense lawyer, whatever he is, is not a defense lawyer:

http://nbc24.com/news/nation-world/federal-hate-crimes-trial-for-dylann-roof-set-to-begin-today
There was little to be said when defense attorney David Bruck started his opening statements.
"This really did happen," he said. He admitted he expected the jury to find Roof guilty.

Well, it is obvious what happened and of course the jury is going to find him guilty. No defense attorney could possibly prevent that outcome.

The only question left is whether or not he'll get the DP, but given that he faces 2 DP trials, I can't imagine he'll escape it.

Well, it is obvious what happened.

Not at all obvious. Look for evidence that actually points towards Roof's guilt.

Roof is appearing at his trial wearing his blue and white striped jail uniform. What kind of 'defense' lawyer would allow this? One gets the feeling that the fix is in.

Day 2 of testimony in the #DylannRoof trial begins. Judge & his attorneys are discussing a request for a mistrial [motioj denied]http:/

Thursday's first witness takes to the stand: Charleston Police Sgt. Daniel English He's sharing his background w/ courtroom

Sgt. Daniel English is discussing how he learned of and retrieved church surveillance footage of the shooting at Emanuel AME

Sgt. Daniel English says there were no cameras inside of the church, but there were three outside.

Sgt. English says that when reviewing Emanuel's video surveillance, he saw a "white male" leaving the church with a gun.

English says he took pics w/ his phone of the man pictured in video surveillance to use in a BOLO, flyers distributed to help find suspect

English now discussing images depicted in BOLO that went out to the public when they were searching for the suspect in shooting

Updated story on the judge denying #DylannRoof's defense team's request for a mistrial in case. https://t.co/x3GLauce5u

English says he reviewed the surveillance video of day of the shooting and cataloged every person who came in & out

Clips being played continue to show victims walking into church, including Myra Thompson and DePayne Middleton Doctor

Rev. Clementa Pinckney is seen on Emanuel's surveillance video holding the hands of a little girl outside of the church.

he video of the parishioners is played, #DylannRoof continues to be motionless like he was on Wednesday, staring at the table before him

Video surveillance being played captured a Hyundai Elantra parking outside of the church and a man with blonde hair walking in

Video later shows same man cautiously exiting the church w/ a pistol in his hands, looking around before hoping back into the car

Video showed the man with blonde hair walking in at 8:16 p.m., and leaving with a pistol at 9:07 p.m., on June 17, 2015

Same camera that captured the man w/ the pistol exit is now showing first responders

Sgt. English steps down from the witness stand. James Tallon, of SLED who goes by "Trey," takes to the witness stand.

  • Video feed momentarily stops as judge and attorneys discuss the defense's objection to evidence being introduced. #RoofTrial

Video feed resumes and so does the discussion. Evidence (pictures) being shown to jury.

SLED's Tallon continues to be on the witness stand. He's discussing a picture taken w/ a device that allows a 360-degree scan of the church

Tallon's time on the witness stand ends. The court takes morning break in #DylannRoof trial

Well, it is obvious what happened and of course the jury is going to find him guilty. No defense attorney could possibly prevent that outcome.

The only question left is whether or not he'll get the DP, but given that he faces 2 DP trials, I can't imagine he'll escape it.

I remember a lot of people saying that about Casey Anthony..

Before taking break, Judge in #RoofTrial warns families that upcoming pics will be graphic. "There is no shame in staying out for this."

DylannRoof trial resumes after short morning break. Graphic images are expected to be entered into evidence soon. Defense objecting to some

Judge Richard Gergel denies the request to remove one image, overrules next two

1 objection, of multiple, was sustained by judge presiding in #DylannRoof's trial. The defense was arguing against graphic pics of scene

U.S. Judge Richard Gergel has so far welcomed the jury with a very warm smile each time.

Brittany Burke has taken to the stand. Burke worked as crime scene investigator w/ SLED at the time of the Emanuel AME shooting

Burke explains she received the phone call to become involved on June 18 to respond to Emanuel AME for the shooting.

Burke was among several agents who were flown by chopper to Emanuel AME,

Burke: her initial thought when she walked into the church was "hectic." "It was very overwhelming the amount of evidence that was there."

Burke: "There was evidence that they had moved some of the bodies. Clothing of some of the victims had been cut..." checking for life

Burke says said the crime scene was chaotic.

Burke says that the crime scene had magazines throughout the floor and casings that indicated shooter was moving around

Burke says she ran out of markers for crime scene evidence. Had to use index cards to continue marking the rest.

Burke explaining to prosecution how to mark evidence. What they take pictures of such as cartridge cases, bullet fragments, etc.

Burke says it took about 8-9 hours to document the evidence at the Emanuel AME church. About 117 piece of evidence, she says.

9 pictures of the crime scene are about to be shown in the courtroom. The first one depicts the outside of the church

Second picture shows the side of the church. Third one shows the front of the church as well.

The court continues to see pictures taken by CSI agent Burke of the outside of Emanuel AME.

More pictures being shown of outside of church. Burke tells court that blood was found in the outside of the back door of a victim EMS took

Prosecution in #DylannRoof trial moves to discuss/show pictures from inside of the church on the night of the shooting.

First picture shared shows a gun magazine laying on the table next to an open Bible and a stack of papers.

The rest of the pictures showed the items of the victims of the shooting, including Bibles and notebooks on tables

Burke is explaining how gun magazines/clips work vs. revolvers

trial goes on lunch break for an hour. Burke still had the stand at the time of the break

I sure miss YesorNo!! I'll be back in a while ....

My heartfelt thanks to Spellbound and Yes/No for the tweets!! This is the most in-depth coverage I can find for this case

Continuing, Part 3. http://www.thestate.com/news/state/charleston-shootings/article119408143.html

Cynthia Roldán @CynthiaRoldan

Court returns from lunch break in #DylannRoof trial. Roof's defense attorney, David Bruck, requesting the court not adjourn late today

Jury returning to the courtroom. Former SLED CSI agent still on the witness stand.

Prosecution questioning former SLED CSI agent Brittany Burke about blood on the floor by entrance.

Images being shown taken by SLED CSI show blood on the floor in the inside of the church.

The camera used to take pictures of the church by CSI agent shows a 360 view of the inside.

Images have so far shown gun magazines, bullet casings, discarded gloves, among other pieces of evidence.

A very graphic image is shown in the courtroom that depicts several of the victims of the Emanuel AME shooting on the ground.

As pictures are shown in courtroom depicting several victims on the ground after the shooting, #DylannRoof continues to stare at the table

Image shown now depicts Sen. and Rev. Clementa Pinckney after the massacre

Scan of the room is still being shown. Victims are being identified by CSI investigator. But the camera continues to return to Sen. Pinckney

Several people have walked out of the courtroom as an image plays and a CSI investigator continues to explain the scene and identify victims

Prosecution moving on to still pictures now, after showing images that gave a 360-degree view of the carnage inside of the church

74 bullet casings were found at Emanuel AME church.

CSI agent Burke says the magazines found at Emanue AME were capable of holding 13 bullets each.

54 "projectiles" were collected from the autopsies of the victims, says former CSI SLED agent Brittany Burke

Prosecution continues to show images of the crime scene, including bullet holes throughout the room inside Emanuel AME

Court takes mid afternoon break before the defense is set to cross examine former SLED CSI agent Brittany Burke.
