I know it’s not the right setting at all to show affection but I sure wish I had seen BM holding Brooklyn’s hand. Not once did I see any sign of support - especially when walking in or leaving the courthouse. I wasn’t there - just what I saw on recordings. I think today even - Brooklyn was walking on his left side and BM had his left hand in his pocket. Just my opinion!
You're not alone. Not once in 6 weeks -- even when gf was in need of consolation.

Well one mention in the trial was the $5000 given to the sheriff that arrived with JMM that night. The one he called to follow him to Alex's house because his truck might break down (then it did) and this guy pick JMM up and drove the rest of the way to Moselle that night. A month later Alex gave him a $5000 check, but on the stand that guy said it was a loan for his parents.
Yeah, and conveniently, the truck broke down near Almeda, so the police chief who received $5k as a loan for his parents was in the vicinity of where AM went just after killing Maggie and Paul. I hope they’re investigating this. It must have been brought up in testimony, (in significant detail) for some reason (to get it on the record for future use?).

I hope in subsequent interviews about this case somebody asks Rogan or others if Paw Paw was a common nickname used. I know it’s a small detail, not relevant to the evidence but dang I’m curious if he made that up for the witness stand which it appears to me he did. Hearing him use it today made my skin crawl Moo
JMM said everybody said it to Paul, but mostly AM. Unless JMM was covering for his brother.

Given the fact the two publications are hardly comparable, -- People Magazine-- a magazine publication mostly for entertainment purposes, and the Wall Street Journal -- an American business-focused international daily newspaper based in New York City (with international editions published in Chinese and Japanese).

Actually, she can't be the source for People, because they said it was someone in law enforcement. I wonder who it was.

He looks happy. Earlier after Judge Newman spoke he looked almost relieved ... glad it's finally over. Supposedly you get tired of being a fraud. It would be honorable for him to tell defense to stop the appeal, give it a rest. However, that would be asking too much from him. Do it for your son, the sole survivor. moo

I appreciate the response! I was under the impression that the door was opened during the states case by the defense of cross of states witnesses, they asked about his character. CW at that point objected, if they’re going to ask about character he gets to introduce evidence to counter it. The judge sent the jury to chambers, listened to the states witness testimony before he made a decision to let them testify. They also asked MP about the Sept road side shooting which allowed the state to clarify that AM had confessed to arranging it. Does that change things?
This was during the states case,

Judge allows Alex Murdaugh's alleged financial crimes into evidence at murder trial, a pivotal win for the prosecution

Newman had said last week that it was the defense who "opened the door" to allowing Murdaugh's financial situation to be up for review when they asked witnesses on the stand about his character and if there was any reason they could think of that Murdaugh would kill his wife and son.

"Evidence of other crimes or bad acts is necessary if it is an essential part of the crimes on trial," Newman said.
It was during the State's CIC that the door opened for sure. I remember watching and thinking to myself "Jim, what are you doing?" I don't remember the exact timing though, as I was working at the time and had it on in the background.

Like I said in my initial post, I really do think the door was opened, one way or another. The point I was making was that it happened during questioning of State witnesses, who inadvertently began speaking to his good character. Saying things like "Oh he and Mags had a great relationship" or some such. Which placed the defense in an awkward position, as State witnesses had testified to his character when being questioned on something totally unrelated. I would have to go back and watch again for the exact timing. In the end calculus, it matters little, as the defense clearly began questioning witnesses about his character afterwards. Door clearly open.

I do have worry over the financial information being included. I agree it "is an essential part of the crimes on trial" as Judge Newman said. It goes to motive, it goes to intent, heck I think it may go to common plan or scheme. Nevertheless (and this is really important), this trial ended up being seven really long weeks of testimony, and a giant amount of the testimony was related to his past financial crimes. That is a very long trial. It was just body blow after body blow of really damning information of prior bad acts. He's clearly a massive criminal. It might have been better to cut down on the financial testimony to just the Mallory boat case financial, not have the Satterfield stuff and so on. Just so many people he wronged.

The sheer mass of his wrongdoing was the problem. He was so crooked that it is nearly impossible to separate from the murders. And as hard as that is, a judge, any judge, has a duty to find a way to shield the jury from that prejudice, IMO. Might have been an impossible task. But that is why Rule 403 is there; to give the court a tool in excluding relevant evidence if one feels it will prejudice the defendant.

So we apply guilt of kick backs?

I've taken food, gift cards, money when LE is working crime, natural disasters in my area. My good neighbor LE, uses by beach house, as other neighbors.Several LE friends use my mountain cabin to hunt deer and coyote. Would this be considered a kick back?

I'm just not getting the "incentives".

All MOO...
Do you, or any of your family, work in law enforcement or in the legal system in your community? Because the Murdaughs did. For over a century.

<modsnip: not victim friendly. This case isn’t about BM>

According to the Netflix documentary, Alec took out a $2M liability policy on the house where Mrs. S fell, just two months before.

She's the one who first found his pills and shared that information with Paul. She was afraid Maggie would fire her for snooping, according to the documentary.

Does anyone else remember that weird bit about putting himself on the claim when he filed against his insurance carrier? As well as Mrs. S. She of course dies, and he gets the settlement!!

IIRC. IMO.

and they're dead. NO WAY AM got 50k of pure oxy a week, took them and lived...either dollar amount is wrong, every MD in the lower 48 was writing prescriptions for him, he owned a drugstore chain, or someone was running PURE drugs from a foreign source. These could not have been drugs manufactured in someone's basement. They would have been laced with something, in this new world of fentanyl kicks. In my mind, the next trials should address this. It makes no sense. He wasnt a movie star with fawning sycophants doing his bidding to obtain controlled substances. Just my common sense opinion.
Agreed. I love common sense. If it doesn't make sense it most likely isn't true. moo

“I don’t question at all the decision of the state not to pursue the death penalty,” Newman said. “But as I sit here in this courtroom and look around the many portraits of judges and other court officials, and reflect on the fact that over the past century, your family, including you, have been prosecuting people here in this courtroom, and many have received the death penalty, probably for lesser conduct.”
