Man accused of impersonating rideshare driver, raping woman in White Center

This was also just on HLN. Another impersonating a taxi driver case. It was reported shortly after it happened but for some reason, just today they seem to be choosing to release this video they have. I hope people see it and help find him.

I would bet SJ's case maybe helped prompt the release of the video. They also state it is because other leads have been exhausted.

The article immediately following that on the site is another attempt at abducting a woman who was waiting for a ride-share at 4:15 am in Seattle.

I think this kind of violence against women is not getting enough attention at all.

I agree. Can't media be off limits for funerals at the very least? Recording other people's grief? Or expecting grievers to make a comment on such a day? It is totally disrespectful and unnecessary. Cover the vigil, etc., that is somewhat understandable. Do they ever go cover everyday funerals that are not the result of a crime? Of course not. jmo.

I also thought the same until a cousin representing the family, Seth Josephson, walked up to the camera to relay a message from the family. He starts speaking a little after the 12 minute mark in the video.

Wow -- seeking direct link to boyfriend's statement.

If accurate, it doesn't follow that missing report was not filed until Friday afternoon.

Wonder if this was "new information" LE referenced today.

ETA: located quote

In the wake of the 21-year-old’s death, South Carolina legislators have already fashioned a bill to make Uber and Lyft drivers have illuminated signs so customers know they're getting in the right car.

"Just little things they can do to enhance safety because I'm telling you this is nothing you ever want to do. You don't want to go through this,” Seymour Josephson said.

Josephson’s boyfriend said that he spoke to her the night that she disappeared.

“She was the love of my life. And I was on the phone tracking her through all of this just to make sure she got home safely. And I immediately knew there was something that was wrong,” said boyfriend Greg Corbishely. bbm

Police say that Rowland trapped Josephson inside the car by activating the child safety locks. Hunters found Josephson’s body in a wooded area – 70 miles away from where she was taken.

Police say they found Josephson's phone and blood inside of Rowland’s car, a black Chevy Impala.

But Rowland’s parents say that they believe that he is innocent.

If the boyfriend was tracking her phone why didn’t he physically go to that location where the phone was tracked or call the police? Why was her body found by two hunters when the boyfriend already knew the locations her phone had traveled?

I posted it as it seems to have come out possibly because of the similarities of fake taxis and maybe due to the fact video helped in this case.

It is just an example of how possibly common the fake taxi thing is as well.

I don't know the details of the video nor if it is even her or her place. Nor any details of the case. I can think of a few reasons for the way it looks but who knows.

I agree though, I did not post it to talk about that case; it simply related to the fake taxi thing, probably a night out the way it sounded and to cement the safety concern and taking precautions as it seems to not be uncommon. I do not doubt they heard about the fake taxi in this case it has such national attention and started thinking about their cases with that component.

It should also point out that even if the driver takes you straight home and you therefore thinks he is safe and you relax, he could still follow you in/attack and has your address.

I wonder if the phone went dead. Tracking apps can pull a lot of battery life. So he thought something was possibly wrong but then was unsure?

Could he possibly mean he was tracking her real Uber ride and knew she was not in it but then reassured himself maybe she got a ride with a friend? Or if he had the info or access to her Uber account? I don't know enough about that, maybe not a possibility.

As we know, hindsight is 20/20. I think he said something to the effect if he could only go back and seems truly griefstricken.

Oh I agree. I am sure there are more cases of fake taxi incidents that we have not heard about and will be covered by MSM now, which is a very good thing. It will help people to be more aware. I just meant for me not to get too involved talking about that video (on this thread) as it seemed odd to me. Sorry about that. I should have been more clear.

ITA. Yes there is the one from Seattle as well.

I believe I read friends did track the phone to a house but they did not locate SJ there. This was just a terrible tragedy but the clock cannot be turned back and I am sure the boyfriend, friends, family will torture themselves for a long long time. And I am 100% sure they are asking themselves exactly what you are asking and feel sick just thinking about what happened to SJ.

Thank you, I did not see that.

The family here too want to make a difference with a message for safety so maybe it was not intrusive to them.

I think generally speaking though in some cases it is and families do not welcome it.

And farther down the page is a fake flat tire scam where a car followed a young woman driving on a spare tire into a grocery parking lot and offered a repair. The young woman victim gave them money then demanded it back when she realized it was a scam and was substantially injured as they drove off

I had some guys in a parking lot stop by my car to ask me if I wanted to fix a big dent I have. Thank goodness I didn’t even acknowledge them as I drove off. Two big guys in an old dark Chevy Tahoe. Yipes.

Nothing at all to be sorry about :) I cautioned myself also that I do not want to sidetrack into talking about the details on there either. It was more about showing the frequency of the fake taxis.

I have learned from this. I have never had a serious problem (a few that have been a bit strange where the instincts go up and some such other things) but we do not ensure they know our names, in fact, we usually say to the driver are you here for "so and so" and give them our names. I will not be doing that any longer.

Scary. Glad you just drove off safely.

Scams everywhere. It is sad when one cannot even enjoy life without having to be overly ultra cautious, it seems like it is coming to that these days. It sure seems that way anyhow.

I am going to take a far different approach with taxis from hereon out.

That second incident in Seattle: She was out on the curb at 4.15 am - maybe going to the airport for a flight? Or to work? guy drives by and trys to force her into his vehicle with a gun, fortunately ride-share arrived right behind him and she and the ride-share called police.

I mean: You can’t assume safely ANYWHERE

So anyone with 99 cents can order an illuminated sign from Ebay and be in business....with lawmakers like these no wonder why problems exist.
uber signs | eBay

I don't think so. The proposed legislation is that the illuminated signage be provided by the ride share companies, and could not be purchased elsewhere.

The legislation would require all drivers for companies like Lyft and Uber to illuminated signage on their cars while they are working. Rep. Rose said, “It will be a light that would have to be given by the company. It’s not something you can go to a store and buy.”

A woman alone, will there ever be a day that does not make one vulnerable? Not that it is only women but just saying...

It is sad but I think in general, at least with these nights out, they have to agree to never not stay in pairs but that is easier said than done too. When I go out with people, we often are not returning to the same residence, at some point one is alone in the cab even if one is with a group or another friend.

In this case, though, that may have made no difference at all, it is possible both would have assumed it was the Uber or one just followed the other. A bit more safety in pairs though, harder for him to control two--on the other hand there could be two deaths.

All we can do I guess is our best to minimize the odds.

Other than that he was 2.5 hours away from Columbia, boyfriend did not provide additional details of how long or when he stopped tracking SJ phone. Perhaps he did phone the police. Maybe he fell asleep. LE hasn't confirmed anything except that they recovered the SJ's phone found in suspects vehicle.

1. Forensic tests revealed large amounts of Josephson’s blood in the back seat and trunk of Rowland’s black Chevy Impala. Investigators also found bleach, wipes and window cleaner inside the car, along with Josephson’s cell phone in the glove compartment.

2. One neighbor who lives near where Josephson’s body was discovered said Rowland went to high school with the two turkey hunters who discovered Josephson’s body.

3. The parents said their son(NR) was passed out at a party when Josephson got into their Chevy Impala. According to them, someone else was driving the car in Five Points.

4. The Rowlands are not allowed to visit their son in jail. The Rowland family said they are working to retain counsel.

What did he do @FedEx, if anyone knows?
I’m going to assume off loaded trucks at the local package center?
Moo

Where was it reported he works for FedEx?

That will be the defense -- they will say it was not him posting on fb. Claim will be his fb hacked.

This is easy to disprove.

This is easy to disprove.

Now we know he had to leave behind some DNA. That would settle things.

NJ Woman in Deadly Uber Mistake Remembered for Energy, Love
Hundreds of family members, friends and colleagues flooded a New Jersey temple Wednesday to bid farewell to the young college student brutally killed when she mistakenly got into the wrong car, thinking it was her Uber.

[...]

Reading a prepared statement on behalf of Josephson's devastated family, cousin Seth Josephson told mourners Wednesday the "sadness will never end."

"It may wane in the future, but it will always leave a hole in the heart," Seth Josephson said of his cousin, calling her fun-loving, generous ball of energy who brightened every room and "will forever be deeply missed."

Josephson was in her last year at the University of South Carolina and ready to head to law school, the next step on her mission to change the world.

Her boyfriend, Greg Corbishley, recently recalled their last conversation. She had thanked him for letting her just be herself.

"Even in the short time she was here, how many people she positively impacted with her energy," Corbishley said.
