The hummers are delightful.
You should see them fight at the feeders- they are funny little birds. I miss them when they leave in the Fall.
Thanks to all for your feedback. I'll go back to sugar and water. :seeya:
I love feeding them and just put out my 3rd feeder the other day.
We have 3 regulars only so far this year. It seems last year, I had about 20 regulars by now. Not sure why the rest arent back.
I agree about sugar and water, and just wanted to add that I use a TON of sugar and it seems like it helps to keep them around. Especially when neighbors put out feeders, you can keep them at your place by having a good strong sugar concentration.
I fill the glass feeder jar to over 1/3 and just under 1/2 of the jar with pure sugar and the rest with water and shake vigorously for about 5 minutes. The idea is to almost put so much sugar in that the water cant hardly dissolve anymore. If you first leave some air need the top of the jar, you can shake it up better and then when it is dissolved, then, add the rest of the water.
Then, I put Red food coloring in and also go a little heavy. I use about 25 drops in my feeder which is almost a quart size feeder.
The feeders I like have at least 4-6 openings at the bottom so they dont fight as much. Plus, I have 3 feeders on top of that.
They do fight funny. Especially when two of them will go straight up and down in the fight dance. :floorlaugh:
I was changing one the other day, and the bird couldnt wait and was drinking from my hand.
