I enjoyed Niner's Common Sense quiz, but as an avid crossword puzzle person, some of the answers were obvious to me. Not that I have more common sense than others, but I've seen the answers come up in so many puzzles.

Missing YesorNo and all the interesting things she posts. Hope all is well with her...

In the meantime, here is another little quiz. I didn't do so well, only getting 20 of 30. How well will you do?

As far as I understand CJ's post about the pacemaker, Ryan had a Left Bundle Branch Block heart rhythm. An LBBB can lead to complete heart block, which can be lethal. They successfully got his rhythm back to normal and placed a pacemaker with wires that control the contraction of the ventricles (the lub DUB part you hear).

Should his heart develop a life threatening ventricular heart rhythm like v fib or supra ventricular tachycardia (SVT), the pacer has the ability to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm like an external defibrillator, but it is inside.

There are 4 chambers of the heart and the "bi" part means it is making both ventricles contract at the same time instead of one faster than the other (affects pump action; blood flow).

Hope I have this right. It has been awhile.

Dear Lord my dh has found Married at First Sight. He agrees with me that Ryan De Nino is a jerk from the get go, and that Sean has to put up with Davinia her drama and crying. Sucking her toe didn't help. I told him to not get his hopes up for Jaclyn and Ryan. They were the couple I was rooting for. He was watching chick flicks the other day. He will drive me up a wall when he retires.

OMG ..... I thnk I will skip that "Married at First Sight" series, Pages. Is your DH close to retiring? Maybe you will need a second TV and headphones for each of you?

Keep your pipes from freezing during cold spell (with clip)

"Plumber Richard Lee, who's been dealing with these problems for more than 30 years, says that the long - standing myth of leaving your sink slowly dripping all day can do more harm than good, especially if your sink is connected to an outside wall.

"The drippy faucet thing we should address a little bit, too, because I have quite a few people that will end up with a kitchen sink on an outside wall.....what ends up happening is the water droplets will go down the drain and freeze and the next ones will come down and freeze and the next thing you know, you're dealing with a frozen drainline which is even more difficult to repair," says Lee.

Lee says prevention is not only wise, but easy and affordable. He cautions against lowering your heat too much when you're sleeping or working; he suggests leaving it in the mid- to high-60s. He also suggests leaving cupboards open, so the heat can warm the pipes inside..."

IN SAVING JODI ARIAS' LIFE, KIRK NURMI BECAME THE MOST HATED LAWYER IN ARIZONA

"..."People still see me as a character: Nurmi the evil defense attorney who supports Jodi Arias," he says in his gentle voice. "As opposed to who I am and what my career stands for."...

Across social media, Nurmi was called sleazy, despicable, slime, a snake, and a terrible lawyer. He received death threats and hundreds of nasty e-mails and phone calls.

To make matters worse, while advocating for Arias, the former public defender was barred by legal ethics from defending himself and his reputation.

Now, just months after Arias was sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison, her former attorney is divulging how his most infamous client upended his world, may have destroyed his legal practice, and nearly cost him his life.

And he wants everyone to know this: He despises Jodi Arias, too...

It was that important to Nurmi to seek redemption.

"If the public wants to hate me — fine. Just do it on the facts, the reality, not just their impressions from TV," he says. "That's the level of redemption I was seeking."...
With his first book complete and his cancer in remission, he's now attempting to build a private defense practice.

He's had few clients.

"He hasn't had any referrals from the trial — people are not calling the office saying I need Kirk to represent me," Aeed says. "He's been really demonized. Everyone hates Jodi so much that they [still] project that hatred onto him."...

"I don't think we'll ever join, just because of the scrutiny," Aeed says. "How does a person turn around his public image. You never get your reputation back when it's gone."
Nurmi hopes this isn't true, but he laments: "I think no matter what I do, I will always be tied to Ms. Arias. I'm sure that if there is an obituary when I die, it will read: 'Jodi Arias' former attorney.'"..."

WORLD EXCLUSIVE:
PROSECUTOR BREAKS HIS SILENCE — HOW I PUT JODI ARIAS BEHIND BARS

"In a world exclusive, In Touch — on newsstands now — has obtained the first excerpts from prosecutor Juan Martinez's highly anticipated tell-all book, Conviction: The Untold Story of Putting Jodi Arias Behind Bars.

Martinez exclusively reveals, “I’ve been a prosecutor for 27 years, and this case required more work than any other I’ve ever had [because Jodi] is so gifted at being deceitful."

The book, excerpted in the new issue of In Touch, details Martinez's exhaustive investigation, how Jodi nearly got away with murdering her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander and the grueling trial that led to one of the country’s most notorious killers being locked up for life without the possibility of parole.

“I don’t know if I ever saw Jodi showing true emotion or if it was all just an act,” Martinez says. “Being manipulative seems to be part of who she is.”.."

Oregon Standoff Officially Ends After Lone Holdout David Fry Surrenders
Fry ordered FBI agents to scream "Hallelujah" before he gave himself up.

"The final occupier of a remote federal property in Oregon surrendered to law enforcement Thursday, ending a nearly six-week standoff that tore apart a rural community, captivated a national audience and left one militant dead.

David Fry, 27, turned himself over to authorities following a lengthy negotiation that was broadcast live on YouTube. He was detained upon his surrender.

Three other holdouts from the group -- Sean and Sandy Anderson, 47 and 48, and Jeff Banta, 46 -- surrendered Thursday morning. Like Fry, all three were arrested as they walked out of the refuge to an FBI checkpoint..."

Former priest arrested in 1960 murder of Texas beauty queen and teacher who was raped while comatose

"It has been nearly 56 years, but a slain Texas beauty queen may finally get justice.

A former priest has been arrested in Arizona in the 1960 slaying of 25-year-old Irene Garza in McAllen, Texas. John Feit, 83, faces a murder charge in the death of Garza, who was a schoolteacher for disadvantaged kids...

Garza visited Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where Feit was a priest, on April 16, 1960, authorities charge. She had planned to go to confession but was never seen again.

Some of her possessions were found on a road outside the church, the Washington Post reported.

The former Miss All South Texas Sweetheart died from a head injury, an autopsy showed..."

Obstacles abound in prosecution of Texas priest in cold case

"Prosecutors face a tough road in their case against a former priest accused this week in the killing of a young Texas teacher and beauty queen nearly 56 years ago, according to legal experts.

John Bernard Feit, 83, remained in custody Friday in Phoenix following his indictment in South Texas' Hidalgo County for the murder of 25-year-old Irene Garza...

"These are challenges that are not unsurmountable, but they are going to be looked at very carefully by the defense," said Philip Hilder, a Houston criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor...

Prosecutors will have to confront concerns about the age of the evidence and how well it has been maintained. Some witnesses might be dead, and others may have dim memories, Hilder said.

The long delay in filing charges could also raise concerns about whether the elderly Feit will be physically and mentally able to help in his defense.

"At some point, a case can become so old that it may be nearly impossible for a defendant to be able to put on a competent defense," Houston criminal defense attorney Grant Scheiner said..."

Appeals court overturns decision to halt executions in Mississippi

"A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday reversed a decision that halted executions in Mississippi, finding a lower court abused its discretion when it blocked the use of certain lethal injection drugs.

Mississippi officials said the ruling validated the state's three-drug protocol, which they noted was the same as the Oklahoma cocktail upheld in a 5-4 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court last June.

But executions in the state are unlikely to restart immediately, according to a lawyer for two death row inmates challenging the protocol..."

Death-row prisoners, victims’ families wait as Ohio seeks execution drugs

"...For most of the intervening 33 years, Gregory Esparza, the man convicted for killing Gerschultz, has been on Death Row in Ohio. He has moved from prisons in Mansfield and Lucasville, and most recently to Chillicothe, but he has been locked in a one-man cell.

It's been two years since Ohio's last execution, and it will be at least another year before another one happens because of continuing problems securing drugs for lethal injection. That means many of the 138 men and one woman on Death Row are racking up long stays at taxpayer expense.

The five longest-serving inmates have spent a combined total of more than 150 years on Death Row.

More than two dozen Death Row inmates have died from disease while awaiting execution...

One of the reasons for the long delays on Death Row is an intentionally created, multistep legal process designed to make sure all necessary precautions are taken when the ultimate punishment is at stake. Add in delays based on DNA evidence and diminished mental capacity, plus challenges to the lethal injection process and years accumulate on Death Row...

Sullivan said that while some murder victim families want to see the killer executed, "others just want support to help the family move along and move forward.".."

Family Says New Evidence Shows Escort Strangled By Serial Killer

"Lawyers for the family of an escort found dead near a New York beach say that an autopsy by a famed coroner shows she was probably strangled, and is likely the 11th victim of a serial killer who police believe murdered 10 other victims on Long Island.

Suffolk County authorities had previously said the cause and manner of death of Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old prostitute, was unknown, but attorney John Ray said Friday that former New York City medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden had reviewed the evidence and said the findings were "consistent with homicidal strangulation.".."

Alabama woman who made granddaughter, 9, run to death has now herself died of prison heart attack

"BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An Alabama woman convicted of capital murder in the running death of her 9-year-old granddaughter died Friday less than a year into her life-without-parole sentence for the killing.

Joyce Hardin Garrard, 50, died five days after being stricken at the state’s women’s prison, prison spokesman Bob Horton said.

The cause of death wasn’t immediately available, but defense attorney Dani Bone said Garrard apparently suffered a heart attack Sunday minutes after visiting relatives at the state women’s prison. She was taken from the prison by helicopter ambulance to a Montgomery hospital where she was placed on life support and eventually died...

Last year, an Etowah County jury convicted Garrard of killing 9-year-old Savannah Hardin by making her run as punishment for a lie about eating candy in 2012. Evidence during the trial showed that girl ran for hours outside Garrard’s home in rural northeastern Alabama..."

In it she talks about what life has been like after April 20, 1999, when her son, Dylan Klebold, and schoolmate Eric Harris committed what is the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. "Columbine survivor Anne Marie Hochhalter, who was paralyzed from the waist down in the 1999 school shooting, says she harbors no grudge against Sue Klebold, the mother of one of the two shooters, ahead of Klebold's interview on 20/20 Friday night.

Hochhalter, 29, posted an open letter to Klebold on Facebook Thursday, to let Klebold know that she holds no anger towards her.

"I have no ill-will towards you," Hochhalter writes. "Just as I wouldn't want to be judged by the sins of my family members, I hold you in that same regard." ..."

This photograph was the most agonizing thing I saw at Auschwitz

"...At Birkenau, the death camp, we followed the path taken by so many prisoners, who arrived by the thousands in cattle cars from all over Nazi-occupied Europe. It led nearly a mile down a dirt path surrounded by barbed wire. On either side, hundreds of decrepit brick chimneys rose from the ground, the only remains of the wooden barracks that were torched by fleeing Nazis as Soviet troops approached.

We paused in a green clearing, a cool respite from the dusty stretch. Then we were told that this was the last stop for prisoners before they were ordered to undress and handed a piece of soap for a supposed shower. Then they were marched into the gas chamber and hit with Zyklon B, a cyanide-based pesticide..."

Plunging into hell of Auschwitz, ‘Son of Saul’ confounds

"..."By making a portrait of a man in the midst of hell, we give the measure of humanity," says Nemes. "To see whether there can be humanity beyond inhumanity. There's nothing left. Can there still be an inner God?"

It's not for the faint of heart...

Nemes, who has ancestors who were killed at Auschwitz, wanted to make a film that reminded viewers of the reality of the Holocaust. While the film has been met by widespread acclaim, it has also drawn skepticism in some quarters for its blend of historical atrocity and a technically cunning filmmaking that, in staying with Saul over a day and a half, bares no context of the Holocaust..."

"A 94-year-old survivor of Nazi Germany's Auschwitz death camp gave his testimony in court on Thursday, face to face with a former guard, who is charged with helping in the murder of at least 170,000 people.

Leon Schwarzbaum, who lost 35 family members during the Holocaust, calmly recalled the camp's horrors and when he had finished he directly addressed the accused, Reinhold Hanning, also 94, on the first day of his trial.

"I want to know why millions of Jews were killed and here we both are," Schwarzbaum said, his voice beginning to tremble.

"Soon we will both stand in front of the highest judge - tell everyone here what happened, the way I've done just now!"..."

If ribs visible, you were candidate for crematorium, Auschwitz survivor tells Nazi trial

"DETMOLD, Germany, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Three survivors spoke on Friday of the smell of burnt bodies and piles of the dead at Nazi Germany's Auschwitz death camp, one of whose former guards stands accused of helping in the murder of at least 170,000 people.

"If your ribs were visible, you were a candidate for the crematorium," said Leon Schwarzbaum, a 94-year-old survivor who lost 35 family members during the Holocaust.

He was speaking at the trial of former guard Reinhold Hanning, also 94, who remained largely silent on the second day of his trial, showing no emotions as the survivors detailed their horrific experience...

Hanning's trial is the first of four Auschwitz lawsuits, which are likely to be Germany's last Nazi war crime trials..."

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs May Be Linked to Diabetes

"You may have concerns about taking a cholesterol-lowering statin drug, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor and generic), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and simvastatin (Zocor and generic), after a recent study linked those drugs to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. But Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs experts say the heart-protective benefit of statins usually outweighs the risk of diabetes, so don’t skip a statin if you need one to lower your cholesterol.

Diabetes isn’t a new side effect of statins. The Food and Drug Administration added it to the label of all statins in 2012 based on a review of studies that found a slightly elevated risk. For example, one study that reviewed 13 randomized, controlled clinical trials of statins found that 4.9 percent of people who took one of the drugs for 4 years developed diabetes compared with 4.5 percent of those who didn’t take a statin...

To figure out if a statin makes sense for you, our Best Buy Drug report on statins recommends using this calculator. It estimates your overall risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years based on your total cholesterol level, HDL “good” cholesterol, your age, blood pressure, and whether you smoke, or have diabetes...

Our medical advisers also recommend that you use the calculator to look at how much taking a statin would reduce your risk. And talk with your doctor..."

Microsoft has listened to angry customers and will now say exactly what's in Windows 10 updates

"..."After listening to feedback regarding the level of disclosure for Windows 10 updates, we decided to implement a new system for communicating updates to the operating system," Microsoft told Thurrott, one of the most respected watchers of the company.

"Today we are rolling out the Windows 10 update history site, a hub for the release notes that will accompany each update and serve as a historical record of prior release notes," the company continued.

Microsoft previously obscured what was in each update to Windows 10, which led some users to complain that anything could be in the software. Then last October, Microsoft promised to become more transparent.

"We will be improving our documentation of what has changed within any individual update, and improving scheduling options for when updates are installed," Terry Myerson, the head of Windows and Devices, said at the time...

Windows 10 has over 200 million users, according to Microsoft, and it will remain free until July, when the company then has to make a decision on pricing."

Don't want Windows 10? No problem, upgrade to Windows 3.1 instead
Meet the Microsoft operating system that ushered in much of what we experience in desktop computing today.

"If you're looking for a 1990s flashback, the Internet Archive has you covered with a new window into the world of Microsoft's 24-year-old Windows 3.1.

Unless you're working at a certain airport, chances are you haven't caught a recent glimpse of Windows 3.1, one of Microsoft's earliest attempts at an operating system with a graphical user interface.

The Internet Archive has now made that possible on a modern Mac or Windows machine, offering hundreds of new games, utilities and 1990s apps that run in an emulated Windows 3.1 environment in the browser..."

Every version of Windows hit by 'critical' security vulnerability

"It was a relatively light month for critical security patches, but one major vulnerability affects every supported version of Windows.

Microsoft said in its latest monthly security bulletin -- its so-called Patch Tuesday -- that users of Windows Vista and later, including Windows 10, should patch immediately to prevent a serious flaw in how the operating system handles certain files..."
