In the meantime, here is another little quiz. I didn't do so well, only getting 20 of 30. How well will you do?

I tried taking the test - but my laptop got stuck on question #18 and went back to the start... :gaah: But only got 8 out of 18... not good at that quiz, as I don't drink soda, pop, or Coke... I would NOT consider Kool-Aid as a soft drink either! And I've never heard of Cheerwine, must be an East Coast thing... :D

YEA!!! :cheer: YESorNO is back!!!!

I'm going to have to skip Juan on Nancy Grace at 8pm Monday - as I HAVE to watch the X-Files.... :) But I will try and remember to watch Dr. Phil's show - :juanettes:
I did break down and order his book though!! :juanettes:

Here's a video of NASA/Goddard 4K Sun pictures:

Really cool!!!!

What I don't understand - :waitasec: - why can't other States use the same lethal injection as Texas????

My Huz downloaded two movies for me about the Holocaust - called Night Will Fall it was a British documentary - produced by Alfred Hitchcock - another shocking film... :(
If you don't mind YESorNO - I'm going to bring your Holocaust links to the Holocaust thread we have here!
Well today I have to water my plants outside since we've had temps in the 70s and no rain in sight until Wednesday - maybe!

Later folks! :seeya:

Green with envy about your nice weather. This polar vortex covering most of the midwest and east coast is brutal! So glad I don't need to leave the house.

Still praying that the groundhog was right and that we'll have an early spring. Maybe this is the last big blast of cold? I sure hope so!

Oops! forgot this...

Today in February:

13th - Get a Different Name Day

In grade school I always wanted a different name - as I KNEW when the teacher reached my name in recall... Boy, did they demolition my first and last name!

But now, I'm happy to have a different name than anyone else - well, back in the late 60s and 70s, there was a girl by my first name down the street!! My name in Latvian, according to my Father, is flowing music! I like that! :happydance:

I've only got 12 more posts and I'll reach 5,500 posts!! :confetti:

And to you all who are in the "Polar Vortex" - :snowball: .. :snowball:

Niner ... can you record Nancy Grace to watch later? Also Nancy has a rerun nightly so maybe you can catch it then?

Do you Feel the Spirit of Valentines Day?

http://www.funquizcards.com/quiz/holidays/do-you-feel-the-spirit-of-valentines-day.php

on the last question:
11. On Valentine's, would you do something different just for your partner even if you hate doing it?

I would if it was NOT hiking!! He loved to hike! Now he can barely get around here...

and my Answer was: You totally feel the spirit of Valentine's day.

:hilarious: My score says I don't worship Hallmark: "You don't feel the spirit of Valentine's day"

We don't go out of our way for most holidays any more, but do make an effort to be kinder or do something "nice" for each other. Could be extra compliments, a note on a post-it placed on a mirror, doing the other's chore, etc.

How are all of you in or near this snow storm? Check in if you can.

Nothing happening here, daisymae. Just darned coooold! brrrrr

Good Morning! We are staying home today as the snow storm starts its fury...no traveling for us today; Better safe than sorry. The road crews are already salting the highways.

As much as I hate saying this...I'm rather glad we are not going to the hospital today! We need the rest and peace of home. We have Squeakers with us and doing some much needed chores that has been neglected around here. Nothing as changed and he is doing the same, hasn't been moved yet, really no idea of the 'why' he has not been moved.

Zuri ~ You explained his heart condition well, better than I could have :) Thanks!!

My mind is blank right now LOL :loveyou: :grouphug:

ETA: :valentine: Will be back on today, sometime :)

:snowball::snowflake::snowball:

Coffeej, it is good to take a day to rest. Hope you relax a bit. Do not try to catch up on everything to the point of exhausting yourself, though. Spend lots of pamper time with Squeakers.

La Nina expected in next months for the first time since 2012

"Even as the El Nino weather phenomenon continues to impact global temperatures and crops, its counterpart La Nina is increasingly expected to emerge in the coming months for the first time in four years.

The return of La Nina, Spanish for "the girl" and characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures, is possible later this year, the U.S. government forecaster said Thursday. It joined other forecasters in projecting La Nina could follow on the heels of one of the strongest El Ninos on record.

Weather models indicate La Nina conditions, which tend to occur unpredictably every two to seven years, may emerge in the Northern Hemisphere fall, while El Nino - which means "the little boy" in Spanish - is expected to dissipate during the late spring or early summer, the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said in its monthly forecast.

The phenomenon can be less damaging than El Nino, but severe La Ninas are linked to floods, droughts and hurricanes..."

El Niño and La Niña: Weather's Sibling Rivalry

"Just when you think you've got the seasons in your area all figured out, along comes a winter that is nothing like what you expect. Around the country, around the world, everything seems to be upside down. Places like Seattle that are accustomed to cool temperatures and a lot of rain instead get warm, dry weather. Places like sunny southern California, the Southwest desert, and even the southeastern United States get cold temperatures and heavy rain. In the usually cold Northeast, it doesn't even feel like winter. And it snows in weird places like in Guadalajara, Mexico....

El Niño causes some serious weather problems around the world, no doubt about it, but La Niña, which Figure 3 illustrates, is not exactly a sweet little thing either...."

Einstein predicted gravitational waves 100 years ago. Here’s what it took to prove him right.

"The “chirp” is bright and bird-like, its pitch rising at the end as though it’s asking a question. To an untrained ear, it resembles a sound effect from a video game more than the faint, billion-year-old echo of the collision of two black holes.

But to the trained ear of experimental physicist, it is the opening note of a cosmic symphony. On Thursday, for the first time in history, scientists announced that they are able to hear the ripples in the space-time continuum that are produced by cosmic events — called gravitational waves. The discovery opens up a new field of scientific research, one in which physicists listen for the secrets of the universe rather than looking for them.

“Until this moment, we had our eyes on the sky and we couldn’t hear the music,” said Columbia University astrophysicist Szabolcs Márka, a member of the discovery team, according to the Associated Press. “The skies will never be the same.”..."

Finding Beauty in the Darkness

"...One hundred years ago, Albert Einstein used his newly discovered general theory of relativity (which implies that space itself responds to the presence of matter by curving, expanding or contracting) to demonstrate that each time we wave our hands around or move any matter, disturbances in the fabric of space propagate out at the speed of light, as waves travel outward when a rock is thrown into a lake. As these gravitational waves traverse space they will literally cause distances between objects alternately to decrease and increase in an oscillatory manner.

This, of course, is far from the realm of human experience. In the absence of alcohol, your living room doesn’t appear to shrink and grow repeatedly. But, in fact, it does. The oscillations in space caused by gravitational waves are so small that those ripples in length had never been seen. And there was every reason to suspect they would never be seen.

Yet on Thursday, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO, announced that a signal from gravitational waves had been discovered emanating from the collision and merger of two massive black holes over a billion light-years away. How far away is that? Well, one light-year is about 5.88 trillion miles..."

Gravitational Waves: What Their Discovery Means for Science and Humanity

"People around the world cheered yesterday morning (Feb. 11) when scientists announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves — ripples in the fabric of space-time whose existence was first proposed by Albert Einstein, in 1916.

The waves came from two black holes circling each other, closer and closer, until they finally collided. The recently upgraded Large Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) captured the signal on Sept. 14, 2015. Not every scientific discovery gets this kind of reception, so what exactly is all the hype about, and what's next for LIGO now that it has spotted these elusive waves?...

Everything you need to know about gravitational waves (in gifs) (with clip)

"Thursday we were all really, really excited about gravitational waves. But maybe you heard all that and were like:

This second-day gif primer will let you join in on the celebrations....

3. But what is a gravitational wave?

Gravitational waves are the ripples in the pond of spacetime. The gravity of large objects warps space and time, or “spacetime” as physicists call it, the way a bowling ball changes the shape of a trampoline as it rolls around on it. Smaller objects will move differently as a result — like marbles spiraling toward a bowling-ball-sized dent in a trampoline instead of sitting on a flat surface.

Einstein actually proposed the existence of gravitational waves almost exactly 100 years ago when he presented his theory of general relativity..."

Einstein, A Hunch And Decades Of Work: How Scientists Found Gravitational Waves (podcast)

"On Thursday, researchers announced the discovery of gravitational waves —wrinkles in the very fabric of space-time.

But behind the headlines and news conferences were decades of hard work, hundreds of scientists and more than a billion dollars in taxpayer funds.

"It's profoundly satisfying that it came out the way that we intended, we'd hoped, we'd dreamed," says Kip Thorne, a gravitational theorist at Caltech who co-founded the project...

The idea of gravitational waves started 100 years ago, when Albert Einstein revolutionized physics with a theory of gravity called general relativity — which reimagined the force of gravity as a warping of dimensions of space and time. The theory made a lot of startling predictions. One of them was that very heavy objects such as black holes should produce ripples in space-time itself..."

A Sunday read:

The End of Solitude

"What does the contemporary self want? The camera has created a culture of celebrity; the computer is creating a culture of connectivity. As the two technologies converge — broadband tipping the Web from text to image, social-networking sites spreading the mesh of interconnection ever wider — the two cultures betray a common impulse. Celebrity and connectivity are both ways of becoming known. This is what the contemporary self wants. It wants to be recognized, wants to be connected: It wants to be visible. If not to the millions, on Survivor or Oprah, then to the hundreds, on Twitter or Facebook. This is the quality that validates us, this is how we become real to ourselves — by being seen by others. The great contemporary terror is anonymity. If Lionel Trilling was right, if the property that grounded the self, in Romanticism, was sincerity, and in modernism it was authenticity, then in postmodernism it is visibility.

So we live exclusively in relation to others, and what disappears from our lives is solitude. Technology is taking away our privacy and our concentration, but it is also taking away our ability to be alone. ..,

What does friendship mean when you have 532 "friends"?...How does it enhance my sense of closeness when my Facebook News Feed tells me that Sally Smith (whom I haven't seen since high school, and wasn't all that friendly with even then) "is making coffee and staring off into space"? My students told me they have little time for intimacy. And of course, they have no time at all for solitude..."

Senior U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia found dead at West Texas ranch (with clip)

"Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body...

A federal official who asked not to be named said there was no evidence of foul play and it appeared that Scalia died of natural causes...

Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan."
