The De Zalze Golf estate

De-Zalze.jpg

The axeman’s blows which stole his brother’s life were so forceful that they sent drops of blood flying several metres through HvB’s second-storey bedroom window and onto the neighbour's wall.

But the position of the droplets and the impenetrability of the fortified De Zalze security estate were two of the aspects in contention on the third day of Van Breda’s trial on Wednesday.

The third day saw him sitting quietly behind his defence advocate‚ Piet Botha‚ who claimed it would be possible to scale a gate at a section of De Zalze’s perimeter.

Judge Siraj Desai responded in the High Court in Cape Town on Wednesday that it would be extremely “difficult and hazardous" for someone to climb the gate as there was electric fencing on top that could trigger security alarms if it was touched.

The day after the inspection of the crime scene‚ where HvB’s attorney‚ Lorinda Van Niekerk‚ demonstrated that once on the premises of the estate‚ it would be possible to breach the boundary of 12 Goske Street via a side gate at number 11.

The defence’s report read: “The location of the blood opposite the window of the bedroom where the bodies of the male deceased were found … was pointed out ... on the boundary wall of 13 Goske Street.” However‚ state advocate Susan Galloway questioned this‚ saying it was not common cause that this was the exact position of the droplets.

She questioned the claim that the droplets were "in line" with the second-storey window.

Welcome back. Henri and his team are back in court. Adv. Combrink will continue to cross examine Edgar Wyngaard.. Wyngaard was on duty as the shift supervisor on the night of the murders. Combrink asking Wyngaard about the patrol trip he took along the fence every night. He squints as he tries to remember the route.
Wyngaard does not work for Thorburns security any longer & he has not patrolled De Zalze for quite some time.

Wyngaard now maps out his patrol route on the estate #eNCA #VanBreda

Here is the aerial photograph of De Zalze Estate that Defence & Wyngaard are looking at, attempting to work out his patrol route.

Wyngaard says he drives along the inside of the fence, whereas his partner Afrika drives along the outside of the fence.

if someone drives into the estate with a card their passenger will get in without being logged as a visitor- correct @CapeTownEtc #vanbreda

Anthony Molyneaux‏ @AJGMolyneaux 4m4 minutes ago #VanBreda @TimesLIVE

Combrink states that it is the responsibility of the residents to not give away their access tag into the complex.

Aarti Narsee‏ @ajnarsee 4m4 minutes ago

Adv Combrink, residents access estate with a card, security may not know their passengers or if the card was lent to someone #eNCA #VanBreda

Anthony Molyneaux‏ @AJGMolyneaux 4m4 minutes ago #VanBreda @TimesLIVE

Combrink now focuses on previous crimes committed in Estate.
Combrink goes through previous cases: theft by unknown suspect from removal company, theft from golf clubhouse. Nobody caught.
Combrink continues with prior crimes in De Zalze. In Dec 2014, there was a house break-in & theft. Wyngaard says he does not know about these as sometimes the residents contact the police directly and so they don't know about these crimes.

EWN Reporter‏Verified account @ewnreporter 4m4 minutes ago @ewnreporter

C asks W how would the intruders be able to gain access onto estate? Galloway objects, saying W isn't even aware of the incidents

Anthony Molyneaux‏ @AJGMolyneaux 5m5 minutes ago @TimesLIVE

Wyngaard says he has no idea about these crimes. He doesn't know if they were at night or day or if it was construction employees.

Wyngaard confirms anyone who has access card can swipe into estate with visitors without questions or being searched.

Focus on past crime at De Zalze- furniture and appliances stolen, theft from clubhouse. Unknown suspects from removal company.

Really? Furniture, appliances and stuff from a clubhouse. The person we're talking about here today stole THREE LIVES.

This is getting ridiculous! Combrink desperately wants Wyngaard to admit intruders got in, how they got in, crime solved!

Combrink now goes to the AC power alarm that was unplugged at 1pm before the night of the murders. Kiosk door also open. Wyngaard states that the wind could have pushed locked kiosk door slightly open which would have set alarm off. Combrink reading from report by security manager of De Zalze Estate from night of murder.
Combrink now poses the big question of Wyngaard. Was that you who went to check the alarm at 01:37am?
Wyngaard says it was not him, it was probably Afrika.
This is huge as Afrika testified yesterday that it was not him who checked the alarm but that it was his supervisor Wyngaard.'This means that the 01:37am alarm that went off on one of the fences was supposed to be checked. Afrika says he didn't check it....and said that his supervisor most likely checked the alarm. Now Wyngaard said he did not check the alarm & doesn't know who did.

Defence: Some housebreaking or theft cases at estate, the suspect was "undetected". "We know it's possible to get inside"

Guard doesn't know about those crimes on estate. Residents report to cops. State objects to him being asked how they got in.

Combrink refers to security manager report saying kiosk gate open and AC power outlet that was unplugged at 1pm that fateful day. #VanBreda

A discrepancy picked up, this happens at every SA trial I've followed, the next day or after a break, the witness changes his account.

Anthony Molyneaux‏ @AJGMolyneaux 4m4 minutes ago @TimesLIVE

Defense adv Combrink takes his seat. Prosecutor Galloway now poses questions to Wyngaard.
Galloway asks Wyngaard if there were any reports of anybody jumping over fence or any non-conducting material being found. Wyngaard says there were no reports the night of the murders & no strange materials found. Security can check who used access tags on the night of the murders. Wyngaard says that they can access that information.

Tracey Stewart‏ @Traceyams 5m5 minutes ago @CapeTownEtc #vanbreda

If there is a hole you report it and maintenance corrects it the next day - yes Combrink objects Desai allows it

Anthony Molyneaux‏ @AJGMolyneaux 4m4 minutes ago @TimesLIVE

In order to get security footage ready for the next witness, the state asks Judge to adjourn court to Monday morning.

Aarti Narsee‏ @ajnarsee 4m4 minutes ago #VanBreda #eNCA

Adv Galloway asks for postponement till Monday. Granted with a warning by Judge Desai that there are no further delays

Anthony Molyneaux‏ @AJGMolyneaux 4m4 minutes ago #VanBreda @TimesLIVE

Judge Desai allows it. So I'll be seeing all of you on Monday morning 10am for more of this interesting case.

Tracey Stewart‏ @Traceyams 10m10 minutes ago @CapeTownEtc #vanbreda

Galloway asks for pp and tried to blame defense for a last minute request but Botha asks for us to continue
Botha asks if we can maintain court hours it costs a lot of money to sit in court for a half day. Judge Desai considers the request and accedes to it and asks that Galloway please use entire court days in the future.Court Adjourned until Monday morning at 10am

hmmm, Botha, Combrink will tear W and A apart, that they're incompetent, anyone can easily get in by climbing fences, through a hole or even using the tag as a visitor. These men will contradict each other, same in Dewani trial, it goes on until this happens.

Sounds par for the course in SA! I wonder whether it is because the guards will likely lose their jobs if found to have missed/skipped a check.

Astonishing at how much court time is wasted by the various parties not being ready.

Re the WS website. I am struggling too with the page jumping around making it difficult to post, so I haven't. Thanks to JJ and Prime for keeping the story up-to-date.

Good to see Tortoise has joined us.

:seeya:

hi everyone, popping in to read but not really the time at the mo for posting.

This one's a no brainer to me - what would you do if you were mum or sister, woke up and thought there were attackers in the house, walk round and bravely intervene?

No unidentified bloody footprints, trail away from the house, or bloody hand prints on the exits = Henri.

I expect he would say he was unconscious the whole time if there weren't phone records to his girlfriend showing he was conscious.

I hope common sense prevails, not expecting it though. Bleeding SA eh, all the usual court breaks and delays.

Thanks for the updates Prime and JJ. Hopefully I'll get more involved when time allows.
