Levi Davis: Missing rugby player case probed by Barcelona crime unit

Rugby player Levi Davis's disappearance is being examined by a Spanish criminal investigation unit, the BBC has been told.

It is four months since the 24-year-old was last seen in Barcelona.

Levi officially remains a missing person, but a spokesman said detectives were trying to establish if a crime had been committed.

Mossos d'Esquadra - Catalan Police - said the case contained "disturbing" issues with "no logical explanation".

A spokesman told the BBC the force could not give more details as Spanish law prevents it handing out detailed information on open cases.

There have been few official updates on Levi's case since his disappearance.

The 24-year-old former professional rugby player was last seen leaving a bar in the Spanish capital on October 29 after travelling from Ibiza.

But a few minutes past midnight on October 30, Levi sent a voice note to a friend, according to the BBC.

In the WhatsApp message, he said Barcelona was "absolutely beautiful".

Levi's pal Richard Squire has been leading the desperate effort to find him - which he has described as an "emotional rollercoaster".

"I'm dealing with people that I've never met before," he told the BBC.

"You don't know what information is right, what information is wrong. And it's just incredibly upsetting.

"Even though it's four months it still feels like the first day every day. And it's difficult, it's hard."

Richard said he dropped Levi in Ibiza town on October 28 and later sent a voice note to check on him.

Levi told him he'd left the island and said he would call when he arrived in Barcelona, but he never did.

Weirdly the Standard link contains nothing about “recording new songs” and this is the first I’ve heard of it?

Spanish police today admitted for the first time that they do not think X Factor star Levi Davis went missing voluntarily.

Former Bath rugby player Davis, 24, went missing on October 29 after leaving a friend in Ibiza to get the ferry to Barcelona alone.

And detectives in Spain said today they do not believe Davis has gone missing voluntarily or that he doesn't want to be found.

It came after it emerged that a few minutes past midnight on October 30 - hours after Davis was sighted leaving an Irish bar in Barcelona - he sent a message to a friend on WhatsApp, according to the BBC.

In the voice note, Davis, who has been missing for four months, told his friend Barcelona is 'absolutely beautiful'. 'It's amazing. I'm literally just getting all my inspo. I love it. It's so good,' he said.

This voice message is the last known contact Davis had with any of his friends or family.

  • Levi's mother said police are examining whether her son may have fallen in sea
  • Spanish cops said there was no 'logical' explanation for Levi's disappearance
  • Private investigator Gavin Burrows however suspects foul play is involved
Police searching for missing rugby star Levi Davis are to investigate reports he may have fallen into the sea - as his family say officers do not believe there is any criminal involvement.

Levi's mother, Julie Davis, said the authorities in Barcelona are probing whether the former Bath winger and X Factor: Celebrity star was the man seen in water close to the city's port early on October 30.

Crew members of a cruise ship docking in the port noticed a man in the sea and threw a life buoy to him.

Police and coastguard launched a search for the man but no-one was located.

A spokesman for the Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police force told Spanish media earlier this week there is no 'logical' explanation for Levi's disappearance, adding it is now being treated as 'disturbing'.

He said: 'With the information at our disposal, it doesn't appear that this person has gone missing voluntarily and doesn't want to be found.

'We're dealing with an adult male whose disappearance doesn't have a logical explanation and which we're therefore treating as disturbing.

The family of missing rugby player Levi Davis have disputed reports the case has turned into a criminal investigation and asked the press to “refrain from printing conspiracy theories” about his disappearance.

The 24-year-old former Bath rugby player and Celebrity X Factor contestant was last seen at The Old Irish Pub in Barcelona on October 29.

Spanish police searching for Mr Davis described the case as an “open investigation” on Tuesday but said they could not give any more information.

Catalan police also reportedly said there are “disturbing” issues with, “no logical explanation”, and a specialist crime unit is said to be taking over the probe.

A statement shared with the PA news agency on behalf of Mr Davis’s family on Friday said gang involvement is “not being considered or investigated at this time”.

They said reports of “hearsay” have been causing “a huge amount of distress” to his family and friends and are “potentially damaging the reputation of a young man who has achieved so much in his young life”.

I don't really understand this,

It was discovered that the suspect had created a fake profile on the Grindr social network with Levi’s photo and a fake name. A fake that was used to bring him to Barcelona”

Why would you meet up with someone who is using your photo, surely you'd just report it online to close down the account.

Embarrassment? Wanting to end the blackmail if he thought/knew was connected?

This is behind a paywall, but you can just make out that apparently LD's family have broken ties with the PI.

I wonder why? Obviously the claims about knowing who was behind LD's disappearance and 'imminent arrest' has failed to materialise.
