Tempo Restaurant: What Happened There?

Well, that's a good question. I personally think they meant at Tempo, but the way in which it was released via the media made it appear as if they meant McGrady.

I went back over the first few days of the search. I have a motto, after following so many cases. We can't just go by what we are told, but we have to carefully watch LE behavior and read between the lines. Sooooo . . .

Sunday Sept 14th:
-Hannah is reported missing at 4:34pm
-LE is searching with bloodhounds around UVA Corner, and nothing of significance is found

Monday Sept. 15th
-Hannah's phone records and computer are being searched
-LE is searching the 14th and Wertland area
-Hannah is reportedly last seen at 12:15 at a party
-the hallway pics of Hannah are released

Tuesday Sept 16th
-LE puts search on hold because of new leads via tips
-LE reports they have video
-Search is moved to Grady and eastward
-LE gets tip of Hannah being at the DM
-LE is also searching near UVA hospital (Wha?!!!! Yep, that's right.)
-The report of the Fairfax/MH suspect sighting is released along with the sketch. (To me, this is clearly a sign that LE had already identified JM. There was no sighting. They just wanted to get the sketch out there because they already knew who and what they were dealing with.)

Wednesday Sept 17th
-At 7 am it's reported that there is a witness and video of Hannah with an unidentified woman on the DM.
-By 9:30am it is reported that search and rescue are all over the DM area.
-It is reported that the last text message from Hannah came from the wrong area.
-Reports of SAR with bloodhounds on Water Street near the parking garage.
-Anchorage farm is searched (Did you hear THAT? They are not trying to ID JM, they are already searching Anchorage Farm!)
-Parker Slaybough reports "breaking news" that LE has video of Hannah walking into a pub at 1 am.
-Presser. . .parents fear "foul play" and LE releases McGrady video.

later on the 17th

-LE has reportedly located WG. Says Hannah was walking with black man
-LE releases Sal's video
-LE releases Tuel's video
-LE says there is no woman and it is Hannah's reflection in the Tuel's video (which WS posters were madly posting at the time that that clearly wasn't true. Sleuthers were all over the man with dreads. ;) )

Thursday Sept 18th

-Reported that police will release more video
-Reported that police won't release more video
-Reported that police are pulling more video, but we will have to wait. . .
-And wait
-several reports that the POI is NOT on any of the videos
-reports that the man with dreads is not a POI and has been cleared
-LE says they want to talk to second male, but give no description
-At 4 pm LE gives description of POI black male, who is not on any videos. . .shaved head. . .etc
-$50,000 reward is announced
-reports that a sketch of POI is coming soon
-Vigil held for Hannah

Friday Sept 19th

-reportedly sometime after midnight a search warrant is executed on Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr's car.
-search warrant for apartment and phone executed shortly after search of car.

Anywhoo. . .that's where I kind of stopped. I think in hindsight it's quite clear how far along LE was in their investigation, what their media strategy was and the motivation behind what they released when.

Sooo. . .MOO. . .LE didn't need the public's help IDing JM. They were already way beyond that when the released the DM videos and all the silly "POI is NOT on any videos. . .It's a woman. No wait, it's Hannah's reflection" nonsense. So why release those videos at all? There were much better pictures of Hannah, so it didn't have anything to do with recognizing her. I think the only explanation was because JM was already under surveillance and they wanted to stress him. They wanted to lead JM to believe that they weren't on to him YET, but they were getting there. LE was hoping if they rattled him, he would lead them to Hannah.

By Tuesday the 16th they put the Fairfax sketch back into circulation and they went sniffing around his place of employment.

On Wednesday the 17th LE searched Anchorage Farm and released the videos that clearly show JM close up, circling around to drop in behind Hannah, and then walking right along side of her.

On Thursday the 18th, LE put the public in a holding pattern. . .and waited and watched for JM to make a move.

MOO!!!!! :moo:

Hambirg, your timeline is spot-on in my opinion. I do wonder what it was that made JLM the POI so early on? Some say he was already under LE's radar and some say not. It seems like he MUST have been. If he was, what placed him under the radar to begin with? IMO

I think he was made a POI early on because of video showing them together

I think if you look at Tuesday Sept. 16th it's clear that LE learned who JM was and realized he matched the sketch from the MH case (I believe it was LE that re-released the sketch. The "sighting" was a fib.) On Wednesday Sept 17th Hannah's parents are telling the media they fear foul play. :(

I agree - on Tuesday LE knew exactly who he was. What I'm wondering is how did they know? It appears as though he MUST have already been on LE's radar. How else would they have known? If he WAS already on their radar, how and why did he get there? It's puzzling. I mean he only had a record of mostly insignificant misdemeanors - nothing that in and of itself would cause him to stand out. His alleged university rapes weren't a part of his county or state record. And supposedly he really WASN'T interviewed regarding the MH case when he was a cab driver. That's what's so puzzling. How was he known to LE?

That's a little unsettling--if he was on their radar before HG came along, I'm concerned about that. LE lays back and waits until he takes another girl, in hopes they'll get him next time around??

I guess while investigating at the DTM they got his name from his CC receipt at Tempo, but according to Hambirg's timeline which IMO sounds pretty close to "exact", they only got the tip that Hannah had BEEN at the DTM on the 16th. That's the same day LE released the sketch, reported they had videos, and searched near the UVA HOSPITAL where JLM worked! I guess with his name they would have found his misdemeanor record and photo, but what at the instant made the correlation with his photo and the sketch? I just find it hard to believe that is how the connection was made. It really DOES seem that he MUST have already been on LE's radar as a perp in some of these cases. Otherwise, his misdemeanor mugshot alone would have had to ring some really giant bell!

I doubt that JLM was walking around freely whilst on LE's radar prior to 9/16.

But once they got tips from mall witnesses, the Tempo receipts, and surveillance video.... they sure connected the dots very quickly!

Remember, the FBI profilers on Morgan's case had predicted that her perp would strike again in the same area, and that it would be someone very familiar with Albermarle county.... now with HG, here was another young coed who had gone missing under somewhat similar circumstances, separated from friends, intoxicated / lost, etc.

I'm sure everything about JLM immediately raised LE's worst fears — JLM grew up in Albermarle; fit the sketch and description of the Fairfax perp; drove a cab when MH went missing... Then to discover his college rape history — his physical prowess as a wrestler and football player — the fact that he was known around the mall for his inappropriate behavior toward women... I'm amazed they were able to play it cool for as long as they did, knowing what we now know.

HG was last seen in a severely compromised state, leaving the Tempo area with JLM. Obviously, he never came forward when LE asked for help finding her. They realized he was trying to hide, and they had a good idea why. After they searched his car, they may even have gotten a preliminary DNA match to the Fairfax / MH perp. Just IMO.

In retrospect, he seems to have been right under their noses. If he turns out to be the perp, I guess he's way more slippery than some give him credit for!!

Yes, to everything you have said. But HOW did they know it was JLM? Hannah was reported missing late in the afternoon on 9/14. By what had to be quite early on 9/16, LE had apparently (according to the timeline) already identified him! Yet it wasn't until that same day (also the 16th) that LE received a tip that Hannah had been at the DTM, then went to Tempo and got a description and name of the POI AND searched the UVA hospital area. Also, a statement from a university to its students along with the sketch was sent on 9/15!!! Even BEFORE they knew Hannah had been at the mall! So SOMEONE in LE had to have had JLM on their radar as soon as Hannah was reported missing under similar circumstances as MH. So was LE's wild goose chase (with the public) that took place between 9/14 and 9/19 that reported all the various descriptions done in hopes that JLM would lead them to Hannah or was it part of a cover-up for having let a rapist/murderer continue to roam the counties of VA for the past 12 years? IMO

ETA: Ennie, what do you mean by your first sentence? According to LE, JLM WASN'T on their radar prior to 9/19 OR 9/16. That's just it - he WAS walking around freely, allegedly NOT on LE's radar. IMO

I wonder if Zapped went to Tempo on Saturday... does anyone know? Just curious and concerned. :)
p.s. I sent a pm, but he has not replied yet.

It's a lot of pressure - you guys are a tough bunch. Brilliant minds, always looking for the loophole, even in our own posts. Maybe he was a tad intimidated, I would be. :)

I must've missed this somewhere along the way- if LE was following him, how did he run to TX and reportedly found by that woman? Or did he run on the Monday?

He hasn't been around since Saturday. It's a mystery. I hope he didn't attempt to go, but got into a car accident or something. He was having car trouble.[emoji20]

I have a hunch Zapped is just taking his time, carefully writing up his observations from his visit to Tempo. He had a high level of interest in doing this recon, and to me he seemed to be especially well suited to the task. Remember, it was his idea that he go.

Yes! I can't wait for his report. :)

I have to admit, everything that the WS'ers have surmised makes sense to me until we get to the part where JLM "escapes" and gets all the way to Texas! I can understand LE suspecting him and "shadowing" him, hoping that he would revisit the dump site. But to lose him because of his driving at a high rate of speed and getting all the way to TEXAS! It just seems like such a "drop the ball" thing in what seems an otherwise tight series of events by LE. I wonder if they had tabs on him all the way to Texas? Wonder if they were trying to see who he would call, what he would say, what he might do etc. It just seems so very out of step with the rest of the actions by LE that he "got away" right under their noses. It leaves me scratching my head, for sure!

I just realized that this is probably the wrong thread for this comment. My apologies.

Do we know for a fact that JM never contacted the police at any point and gave his story?

We don't know much of anything for a fact, and even if JM had contacted LE it is not like they would acknowledge that in the media. Despite what Longo claims when JM was at the police station on Sept 21st that they had not spoken to him regarding HG, there is an officer on record who contradicts this and Longo contradicts himself yet again.

Lead investigator Detective Sgt. Jim Mooney said he spoke with the man Friday morning when police executed a search warrant at his apartment in the 100 block of Hessian Hills Way, off Barracks Road, "and I want to talk to him again." He declined to say what the man told him.

Longo said police had previous contacts with the man, but he would not provide details.

Further along in police escapades...it is widely reported that JM left the police department at a high speed. Not so, according to other reports.

LE overtly followed him to his grandmother's home where he then left at a high speed. The wreckless driving arrest warrant was then issued.

He later speeds away from authorities as they follow him from his grandmother’s Albemarle County home,

Yes, I guess that is what confuses me. My best guess is that they really didn't want to arrest him/detain him in hopes that he would lead them to Hannah, and that has been stated by others as well. It makes the most sense to me. Personaly there is no doubt in my mind that he abducted, raped and murdered HG. I just can't make sense out of the "escape to Texas" part! I guess we'll find out down the road, after the Fairfax trial has ended and the HG trial begins. A whole lot to follow for one person, esp. when you add in MH.

That, or, according to bartender, owner and staff at the door, his companion ordered and paid for two drinks, but he never entered Tempo at all.
