NHS waiting times are now the longest they have been for almost a decade, with more than 409,000 people waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment - a rise from 34,000 in 2014.

Soaring numbers flying abroad for medical care as NHS lists lengthen

The new figures from the Office for National Statistics show a 198 per cent per cent rise in trips abroad from the UK for medical reasons between 2014 and 2016.

Looks like most of the delay is for non-urgent surgeries like hip and knee replacement and cataract surgeries.

Experts said lengthening waiting times for surgery - particularly hip, knee and cataract operations - and cutbacks to fertility treatment - were fuelling the rise.

That's far better than the US where delays for those surgeries is just as long if you have insurance. If you can't afford insurance, you don't get any of those treatments. I worked for many years counseling cancer patients and saw many die because they couldn't afford treatment. It happens.

While not British, apparently the health system in Canada is similar. As a result, hospitals in northern Washington State & northern New York State see a number of Canadians for surgeries considered elective?

No link, did read this on-line.

JMHO YMMV

Not so sure the people needing hip- knee replacements & cataract surgeries would agree that these are “non-urgent” surgeries.

It's free to see a doctor or midwife all the way through pregnancy, free to have scans and get prescriptions, and free to give birth whether in hospital or at home with an NHS midwife. All followed up with a relatively generous paid maternity allowance and up to a year to spend with your new baby. Not forgetting dads - they get some paternity pay/leave too.

The NHS has many faults and funding/staffing issues, but I think our maternity services are pretty good. It will be interesting to see whether Meghan goes private or puts her trust in the NHS as was rumoured.

I to had a baby (usa) & insurance from work paid. I had three months off, paid.

Jmo she’ll go private.

Eta I read DM, sky news, guardian, bbc, I read the stories about nhs.

I'd have thought so. A friend had a private birth in London a few years ago, cost about £12k for the birth and 2 or 3 days after care. Pretty sure Harry and Meghan won't miss that going out of the bank account!

While the idea is noble, I don't think it'd be fair to put the extra strain on the NHS what with the extra security, press and all. 'Locking down' a hospital would have a knock-on to normal people needing hospital treatment. The private maternity-only hospitals are more geared to handle the onslaught.

My first was two weeks late and I think I'd finished work 2 or 3 weeks before due date so I had a lot of time to kill. I spent quite a lot of time walking round Mothercare hoping my waters would break in there and I'd get free nappies or a pram ;) Definitely couldn't have done it in 5 inch heels though!

Not to be mean, but does Meghan really do that much??? Shows up her events for a few hours, shakes hands , small talk and smiles. She has a staff to do everything house-hold wise. Probably has hair stylist and makeup -pros to do her make-up / hair. It is not like she is working a 40 hour a week job and having to do everything else. It is super great that she feels good enough to do these engagements but to me it is not like the real working world.

Also , she is driven everywhere. She does not have to deal with stress of traffic.

No tomatoes please.

IMO, Meghan has no reason to get tired or be bothered by walking in heels. I do not believe she is pregnant! A surrogate is carrying her baby.

Her baby bump can change sizes from morning to evening, day to day, even within hours. One day she has a flat belly button, the next day she has a protruding one that cannot be missed.

She has held onto her bump since she started wearing it. Is it to emphasize her pregnancy or fear of it shifting out of place? My guess is she is paranoid it will move which will betray Meghan and Harry’s secret. There is nothing worse than a lie as huge as they are telling the world.

She shows no signs of swelling anywhere on her body. Her face, fingers, ankles, show zilch. Her rings have always been loose on her fingers and they still are. Also, she walks as a regular person does, not like an eight month pregnant lady.

We know they were seeing fertility specialists before they got married. It takes time to get two women, the mother donating the eggs and the surrogate who is to carry the baby, on the same cycle to insert the fertilized egg.

It will be exciting to see how the next month and delivery goes. Should be very exciting.

***My opinions only***

Hey Everyone,

Come on now. Let's leave the conspiracies to black helicopters and the Illuminati.

THERE IS NOTHING TO EVEN SLIGHTLY HINT MEGHAN IS NOT ACTUALLY PREGNANT.

To me, her face as really filled out. I know that feeling. Like a bloated oat.

We are pretty easy going on this discussion but I do have to draw the line on this theory.

Thank you in advance for understanding.

Tough to do much when you spend the day holding your belly.
