Apparently, the pings can only be discerned by the mother ship when the Titan is directly below - so if they got that ping, then they would have had that last coordinate (couldn't be all that different from the one 15 minutes before).

I assume that's the ping they're using as the "last known position" of the Titan.

And, I believe that had the Titan deployed its automatic jettison system (if that system really exists), the Titan would surface not too far from where it went down (but..."not too far" nautically could still be hard to pinpoint).

I wish Rush had painted all the Titans a more detectable color.

IMO.
Whatever happened to the rectangular object a plane saw?

I am still inclined to think that the Titan has been destroyed, although I hope I'm wrong. As far as the 7 ways to surface in an emergency, I'm not convinced that the engineering is good enough for any or all of them to work. If the "deadman" method - the release by rope that would deteriorate in a certain timeframe - worked, the Titan would be on the surface. If it is submerged, but near the surface, that is a sign of poor engineering that did not account for water temperature and other factors affecting buoyancy.

Although the timed underwater noises/banging were very encouraging, it is also possible that these noises were emitted by surface vessels in the vicinity, and don't originate deep underwater. That problem occurred during the MH370 search.

Yes. I have no problem with adrenaline junkies. (I actually have no problem with any adult choosing to take risk like this). But I'm wondering if the billionaires who take huge risks are doing so because their power makes them feel invincible, thus they really don't believe the worst can ever happen to them. Like life has caused them to miscalculate risk.

Wow, the preponderance of stories about this company’s submersible being janky seem to greatly outweigh the very few successful Titanic sightings. Was there only one, or were there any other successful trips?

I grasp that exceedingly rich people who have earned their money honestly have the right to splurge as they see fit. I wonder if any of them studied the previous outcomes thoroughly. Maybe they did and were still enthralled by the idea. Maybe some had second thoughts and were swept along by adrenaline or by the excitement of the others.

They did all sign the waivers. IMO since the owner is on board, I imagine at least he felt secure in his design.

BBM.

That struck me too.

They had to sign a waiver that mentioned "death" three times on the first page, and it was a fairly long waiver.

I just don't think that any of the passengers were truly aware of the mishaps in the past or the controversial build of the Titan. A non-expert isn't going to know what to ask. After reading here on WS, I know I'd like to have a tracking device that worked like those that they use on sharks' fins!

The whole thing was treated more like it was a dangerous carnival ride, IMO.
I frequently work at motorsports events, and the fine print on the tickets always mentions the danger to spectators including risk of serious injury or death. I don’t think anyone ever pays attention

I agree with this, it's been discovered, filmed and documented that should be the end of it, imo. Does everyone just have the right to visit and tour it? I just don't agree with that.

I am sure there are attorney's now lining up with OceanGate in their crosshairs, regardless of any disclaimers. What about the minor that went? That seems terribly risky. I am also considering the great expense this is costing the rescue companies and risk to the searchers. Who will foot that bill? I foresee some deep investigations into these high risk adventures. JMO
The liabilities of OceanGate will FAR exceed its assets and insurance. I'm sure they will soon file bankruptcy, it assets liquidated and distributed. Its engineers and senior admin will face lots of depositions and scrutiny and hearings in the future.

New photos show Titan on its way out to sea

Only a few days ago, CBC journalist Kenny Sharpe took these photos at St John's.

Writing on Twitter, Sharpe says he didn't know what he was photographing at the time.

It turned out to be the Titan submersible being towed out to sea.

The images show the small sub being pulled along by the Polar Prince ship, as the crew heads towards the site of the Titanic wreck.

Why didn't the sub have black box?

Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent

GPS does not work deep underwater. And it is thought that there has been a failure in what communications equipment is on board.

I'm not too surprised that they didn't have a black box. The submersible was controlled by a video game controller!

What are the seven ways?

Capt. (Ret'd) David Marquet, a former submarine commander, explains the complications of an underwater rescue in the high seas.

At 4:25 he discusses some of the seven ways to surface in an emergency.

No amount of money would ever cause me to take the trip.

Heck, I won't even drink raw (unpasteurized) milk... the possible bacteria present can kill us. There have been deaths and years of lawsuits. The FDA has regulations against the sale and transportation. Each state is allowed their own regulations and it is still sold across the country. There are many people who will drink only raw milk despite the deadly bacteria. My point is... everyone takes their own risks... big or small... all the time.

Going to view the Titanic wreckage in a sardine can that's held held together with some bolts and zip ties and is guided with a game controller... the huge risks are more than obvious. imo

That's a really great photo to see how tiny the submersible is!

Off-topic: Two thumbs up for appropriate deployment of the word "janky," @Arkay !
