I've been wondering about the mention of the CIA. He obviously musta told others/students that he worked for the CIA?
I am curious about whether other students believed these claims at the same level Elizabeth apparently did (according to her dad).
As someone in the field of education, I have definitely seen teachers tease their students about things like this...but it's usually said with a twinkle in the eye rather than as a repeated lie. For example, students often seem shocked when they run into their teachers in the community doing anything social as they imagine their teachers mostly just sit at home grading papers for fun. Some teachers playing off this naïveté and will say things like, "In my past life as a movie star"...or "when I worked with James Bond, I learned"...again, tongue in cheek, as a display of humor, and assuming kids don't really believe it.
I would love to hear if other students took Tad's comment as seriously. And would love to hear how much detail he laid out (was it an elaborate lie with many many "facts" given) or just a wink-wink kind of thing.
Not that it matters a whole lot. The guy's actions are outrageously unethical at this point and have crossed into predator territory. But it may tell us something about her innocence and naïveté as a result of being homeschooled and sheltered. If she is particularly naive, he could be telling her all kinds of falsehoods at this point. I.e. Things like "The state was going to make you move back in with your mom and give her full custody so we have to run."
Just speculation. A thought to play with when thinking about this.
