Trial Analysis

We’re now two full weeks into this trial. On Friday, Linda Drane Burdick stated that the state expects to finish their case in chief on Friday June 17th, so we’re about half-way through the state’s case in chief.

What are your expectations for the weeks ahead? Who do you think will be testifying for the state in the next two weeks? Who will be testifying for the defense? Any thoughts on what the defense will claim in presentation? What do you think the outcome will be?

One of my expectations is to see more of Mr. Ashton ... I think he is fantastic and very effective ! Maybe we will see more of him when the DT presents their case and he will do more cross-examinations then. I do think LDB and FG are doing a great job as well !! But I do hope Mr. Ashton gives the Closing Statement !

I haved tried to put myself in the position of the Jury to analyze what they have seen so far, and this is what I am seeing -- which I hope they are seeing as well. lol ...

The Jury has seen the SA very methodically lay out step-by-step, what happened to Caylee. The Jury can easily see that the SA is very organized and has done their "homework" and they have left " no stone unturned."

The Jury has seen the DT very disorganized, badgering witness after witness, including Forensic Experts and Law Enforcement, and give an "unbelievable" "story" in OS !

I hope the Jury is getting the "real picture" of what happened to Caylee and not falling for any of the DT and ICA's "stories" . . .

As to the DT's witnesses and defense, it should be very interesting -- considering the "stunt" they tried to pull off in opening statements . . .

I do think JB will resort to character assassination for his defense. What else does he have? Although I would love to see ICA testify. He will also blurt out anything he can think of (and it will be objected to and sustained) in order to try to influence the jury. I just hope they are not falling for his BS. I don't think she will get the DP. I'll be happy with LWOP.

He's a lot like Casey in some ways.
No planning ahead.

I was just coming to post the same thing!

Jose shares many of the same characteristics as KC, in my opinion, if you take into consideration his past actions as we have learned of them regarding "issues" he has had in the past....excuse, excuse, excuse....starting with his refusal to pay his child support!

I'm not sure where to post this, but "Trial Analysis" sounds like it might be the right thread.

I thought this was an interesting moment, during JB's cross of Ms Lowe. Actually (to use ICA's over-used word) it was pointed out by our astute member, fifteen89, on yesterday's morning live trial thread. (Kudos to fifteen89!)

You can hear and watch on the video linked below, at about 4:15 minutes in, where JB asks Ms Lowe the question, "The child was still missing at that time, was she not?"

http://www.wftv.com/video/28131191/index.html

But, but, but, but ..... in his Opening Statement, on 5/24, JB stated:

"How in the world can a mother wait 30 days to report a child missing? It's insane. Something's just not right about that. The answer is relatively simple. She never was missing. Caylee Anthony died on June 16, 2008, when she drowned in her family's swimming pool."

Soooo :waitasec: JB! Which is it? :waitasec:

Excellent observation! Yes, which is it JB? Was she still missing or was she "never missing."

Newbie here, don't know how to do the quote box yet. I just wanted to say I agree with Dragonlady's post. Especially where she says--

"I strongly believe that ICA enjoys seeing others suffer, especially her parents,"

Lillian Glass body language specialist has been analyzing each day of the trial and I find it very interesting on her take. You can see her daily trial body language assessements here.

ITA! Adding that the jury has had the opportunity to observe the defendant and no doubt has noted her coldness, crying when it's about her, but not shedding a tear for her daughter. They've seen Caylee's grandmother's grief, but no grief from Caylee's mother.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Jeff Ashton too!

Does anyone know if and how the cell phone pings will come into evidence? After reading through those threads & the witness list this w/e, they seem to play an important role in the time line of Casey's whereabouts. I could not tell from the witness list who might testify to that. Also, it seemed many of us had narrowed down the TOD for Caylee to be in that 2-4PM time frame on the 16th

TIA

I did see a radio frequency engineer on the witness list. That is who will testify about the cell pings.

I worked for a cell company when they were building their towers to launch service in our area (obviously some time ago!!) So architects would design the towers and contractors would build them and the RF engineer would actually be responsible for the equipment on the tower. They would adjust the position of the antennas to try and cover the largest area or at least the most strategic area (highways, office parks, malls, etc.) Then they would do what were called "drive tests" which were basically like the little guy on the commercial....the engineer would go out driving and call the office and talk to someone (can you hear me now? Good!) and if the call dropped note the location so they could try to make adjustments. They should be able to explain to the jury what the pings mean about her activities in those 31 days.

I feel sick just thinking about hearing the defense's case. Honestly, they have already proven they have no boundaries, and I just wonder how many more innocent people are going to be hurt. I cringe thinking about it. I think what makes me even sicker, is the thought that one juror might buy the DT's load of bulldoo.

I don't think anyone is buying it. I'd be surprised if they did. I'll agree with an earlier poster that the theory initially added confusion, but after watching the state present the first part of their case, there are so many holes in the DT's theory that it's just simply unbelievable.

One of the tweets from court said that it is even more pronounced in person!!

The thing that occurs to me once again is that Jose is trying his darndest to keep the jury from believing Caylee's body was in the trunk of ICA's car. But, the idea that Caylee's body was not in the car then invalidates the defense 's inference that JB was trying to make when cross examining GA. Specifically, JB was trying to make the point that GA knew that the car smelled of human decomposition but did"t report it the LE. Now, IMO, JB cannot make the point of the car NOT smelling like human decomposition by invalidating Dr. Vass' testimony and ALSO make the point that GA smelled human decomposition in the car but did not report it to LE. Either there was the smell of human decomposition in the car, or there was not. JB seems to think he can argue this factor both ways. Please, jury, watch closely and see how JB is contradicting his own line of rationale. JMO

Hi All -

I'm new here and just want to say I enjoy reading everyone's posts. I thought I knew a lot about this case but you all know so much more!

OK . . .I'm going to just go out on a limb here, and try to encourage Baez to return to his opening statements, and try to at least support his own hypotheses. Not go against them with his current objections and assertions and annoyances in his cross.

Welcome to Websleuths, uberwe! This is the absolute best forum, and a great group of sleuthers. Glad you found us.

I predict quite a bit of drama when the defense presents its case -- like in the opening statements when JB barked out bombshells.

I don't think the jury will vote for the death penalty.

This question is for anyone, really.

How long do you suppose the Defenses case will be? I've always held the belief that less is more- or "you can't prove a negative"- So it would be much more effective for JB to try to discredit all the SA's witnesses, rather then drone on and on about how their client is innocent using witnesses that in the end, will provide nothing of true value. We know JB plans to bring in someone to discredit Dr. Vass' testimony- but I'd say he was pretty effective, but we'll have to see...........Again, JB is trying to argue what he's already conceded to- that is that Caylee was dead on June 16 and GA dumped the body *and the fact that he argues GA had use of the ponitac*, he's basically arguing with himself instead of arguing a point that GA used the car...........

I have to admit, I am not really interested in JB's arguments. Mostly because I am already very convinced base on ALL the circumstantial evidence that KC, alone, killed her child and disposed of her in the woods.

May just have to be busy until closing arguments.

Also- considering the position JB took in OS, how do you think CA and GA are hoping this will play out? Remember, he's implying GA is the one....... So who do they route for? It's ugly either way, I suppose.

Nope. One can spend countless hours googling people, cases where people have been duct-taped across the mouth and nose and nothing, NOTHING will come up that is remotely credible post-mortem.

Try it.

moo

Only post mortem account I know of where duct tape was applied over the mouth ( not the nose ) was the case of JonBenet Ramsey.

i think she's going to get LWOP. I think Baez isn't doing very well but I wont say that he may not have bored one juror to death who could muddy the vote in the end.

That is exactly what floors me! Why spend all this time trying to prove that poor little Caylee's body wasn't in the trunk of Casey's car? Baez said that she died in the pool. I took that admission in his OS to be the reason for the smell in the car. And now he is trying to prove that Caylee's body was not in the car?
