I don't think Samuels forgot the question guide at home. I think he was stalling - finding out what they were going to ask him and then prepare for it overnight. I could be wrong, it was just a thought that came to mind. Surely this guy can't be THAT disorganized - to go to a nationally televised death penalty case and not bring your entire living room with you just to be safe???

The problem with that is that it made him, the defense, and Jodi look bad. He made to many blunders and I think they are going to have a hard time trying to rehabilitate him.

Thanks so much for this post. I really was wondering if it was common practice. I mean, I know I always had to fill in my bubbles all by myself. And JA has a ready supply of those little golf pencils. Why wouldn't he bring the answer sheet? And, worse yet, why didn't he turn a copy over to the prosecution? Quick answer: there never WAS one. He scored it from the legal pad. I agree.

i don't think he had Jodi take the test at all but did it himself so he didn't have to bother going to the jail to see her. This nitwit is actually trying to convince us that this all-important test that she's supposed to take herself he specifically goes to the jail for her to take it and forgets to bring part of the test? The part that SHE fills out? And he expects us to believe that instead of postponing to another time when he had the appropriate materials for HER to take the test instead he writes her answers HIMSELF on plain paper instead of letting HER write her own answers to the questions then goes back to his office and using her supposed answers fills in the answer sheet that he supposedly forgot to bring to the jail when his going ot the jail was only for the purpose of HER taking this test? BALONEY.

He never went to the jail to have her take the test and just wrote out what answers he wanted for the test in his own hand to have as "evidence" and then filled in the answer sheet himself. This dude clearly is not accustomed to actually having to the do real work of evaluating a person.

When he finds out that her answers on this test were all a fabrication based on her lie story of the intruders that he claimed to have ALREADY suspected was a lie story it never enters his head until he's cross examined that he should have administered this test to her again for her supposedly truthful story that is the whole darn reason she's claiming self-defense in this trial and KNOWING that the test results based on a KNOWN fabrication was totally worthless???

Then he goes totally unprepared for testifying and doesn't bring with him relevant parts of his case file when he's getting PAID to do this???

What on earth was the defense thinking with using this idiot? They would have been FAR better off not having any expert than this charlatan. Never in my life have I ever seen an expert - even the ones that sell their souls doing this for a living - anywhere close to this disgraceful and thoroughly unbelievable.

The PCL-R (psychopathy checklist revised) and the PPI-R (psychopathic personality inventory revised) are the preferred forensic assessments for psychopathy. The MCMI is based almost solely around the DSM - so where it can most definitely be useful in highlighting axis II disorders - it's also limited to the DSM diagnoses and criteria used to establish them.

The DSM-IV doesn't list psychopathy or sociopathy at all. The DSM V will fortunately rectify that to some degree by eliminating antisocial personality disorder and instead sort of blend antisocial behaviors with psychopathic traits. Where ASPD can be related to some degree with psychopathy most researchers (like Hare) believe emphatically they're much different disorders which use different diagnostic criteria and while a psychopath might score high for ASPD, an ASPD is unlikely to score high on an assessment for psychopathy. Hare estimates about 80-85% of criminals meet the diagnostic criteria necessary for an ASPD diagnosis but only 20% of those are also psychopathic.

They are eliminating antisocial personality disorder? Well, H*ll what are they replacing antisocial disorder w/o aggressive features and antisocial disorder w/aggressive features? geeeeeeeeez.. Since being retired I have not been day to day kept up with the new revision of DSM-V.

I retired during the DSM-IV. In fact, I just had gone to three workshops going over the "new revision of DSM-IV" for continuing education credits months before I became disabled.

He didnt seem to me to have any lack of education or experience. Whicb makes it all the more strange that he would vet up there unprepared. Maybe your average prosecutor isnt nearly as good as JM? --- The defense attorneys DEFINITELY should have known better.

If you compare his CV with that of another expert, with over 3 decades experience, it is extremely telling. His formal education ends before I was even born. The advancements in PTSD research alone in that time could move mountains. He admitted on the stand he preferred to read summaries of studies and research rather than the actual empirical process. Which is frankly a little frightening all on its own and makes me grateful he isn't actively treating patients.

He has no peer reviewed articles; he hasn't taught a course in anything, anywhere; hasn't seen a patient therapeutically in years according to his testimony and last evidence of any continuing 'education' (which could be argued all on its own, really) comes in 2005.

And he most certainly does not follow any of the guidelines of administering a psychological assessment, even forensically, with which I am familiar.

So...I'm left with he was the best the defense could get (which says it all) and the defense erroneously believed a flawed expert was better than none at all.

seriously, I don't know how else to classify any mental health professional who would send an incarcerated admitted killer awaiting a death penalty trial a book recommended for those described as:

It is seriously deranged. It is so inappropriate as to itself cast doubt on anything this guy could possibly say. It's as bad as his insistence on "low self esteem". Really, is that her biggest problem? Not her being an admitted killer who can't remember the three different ways she killed someone she allegedly "loved", but it's her low self esteem which is preventing her from living up to her potential?

After listening to him be so snarky yesterday about the sanctions and mentioning several times that he's basically only in this for the money and the glory and doesn't have time to keep up with the rules of his industry - man, I was ready for someone to just cut him off at the knees. This guys's a money-grubbing opportunist who needed to e cut down to size. Publicly at that. Someone needed to put a stop to him. Juan did us all a favor. IMO
