I've missed testimony up until now today because I had a doctor's appointment. While I was waiting I started thinking about some social workers I know who work in a domestic violence shelter. They are great, caring women who work hard and have a lot of insight into domestic violence. They can tell you all about it. They would tell you some of the same things that ALV talked about when she spoke about DV generally.

But what they could not do is what ALV pretends she can do, assess a sociopath to see whether she was an abuse victim. The issues of this trial never come up in their work. They see women who come to the shelter, often with children. They are scared, often bruised. Usually the police have arrested their partner and they are there because he's made bail. The children are scared. The shelter is crowded and spartan. It's safe, warm and there is plenty of food and a bed for everyone. But it's not the Ritz Carlton. No one would come there if they had somewhere else safe to go. That's not to say that some women might not falsely claim to be abused in a divorce or criminal case, of course that happens. It just doesn't happen with their clients. They wouldn't know how to assess whether Jodi was lying or telling the truth - and they wouldn't feel qualified to do so just because they know all about domestic violence.
