The gunman who killed 26 people in a rural Texas church on Sunday escaped from a psychiatric hospital while he was in the Air Force, after making death threats against his superiors and trying to smuggle weapons onto the base where he was stationed, a 2012 police report shows.

The report filed by the El Paso officers says that the person who reported Mr. Kelley missing from the hospital advised them that he “suffered from mental disorders,” and that he “was attempting to carry out death threats” against “his military chain of command.” The man “was a danger to himself and others as he had already been caught sneaking firearms onto Holloman Air Force Base,” it added. The police report was published on Tuesday by KPRC, a Houston television station.

*RED by me*

Damn, what DOES it take to lock this type of person up, and whiskeytangofoxtrot was the Air Force sitting on it's hands for?!?!?!

She is totally on my mind, along with her mom. My heart truly is with them, I completely respect the need for their privacy, though I would like assurances they are with each other, with a support system...any word would be appreciated.

But, bottomline, they get to decide how they want to communicate or not communicate.

I'm teary-eyed writing this. This has got to be living HELL for them and that's just so sad.

Just heard on Fox news that the estranged wife was not at the church during the shooting. Reporter got it confirmed by LE.

Mods are Amazon wish lists allowed? There are few Devin Kelley wishlists that have items that would suggest a fascination with knives, tactical equipment, skulls ; in fact several full face masks listed that would fall under the description that this was wearing.
Lists from 2013 showing items like these.
Definitely not your normal looking wishlists.

If it's the same one I just found, the only thing I find "out of the ordinary" are the masks. Some of those things I might be interested in as well as some of the men in my family.

Thanks!

I'm going to assume she was with her mom and kids and leave it at that.

Peace to them.....

Our society doesn't take DV or rape seriously that is why.
No idea why either but it's not seen as a huge problem.
I've been in a DV situation and LE wouldn't arrest the guy who threw me through a bay window. No arrest they laughed with him saying women can be crazy. Keep in mind the officer was female and laughed in my face.

I haven’t been in a domestic violence situation, but I once lived in an apartment next to a man with mental illness who stopped taking his meds and then became fixated on me. He would wake everyone in the building in the middle of the night screaming that he was going to kill all of us and trying to bust down the wall between my apartment and his. One night, he wrote a disgusting message on my door in soap. The men in the building called police. When the police came, he refused to open the door saying he “didn’t do nothing,” and the police just left. I wasn’t home at the time but the guys told me all about it and then basically became my bodyguards. When I called the police they told me there was nothing they could do until he took action. Basically, he had to rape or kill me first.

The system is backasswards for sure.

agreed. The AF did take it seriously but still he managed to slip between the cracks over and over again.

But they also plea bargained down the most serious charges, did not give him a dishonorable discharge, apparently did not ensure that he got treatment for mental health issues and then didn’t report his offenses to the FBI to keep him from purchasing guns.

There really isn't much police can do other than to question him, and if he refused to open his door... well what can they do? You could have gone to the police department and filed a complaint. We have a neighbor who harassed the you know what out of us. When she was seen in our other neighbors yard taking pictures of us, we went to the police department and filed a complaint. The next step, if I remember correctly, would have been a restraining order had she done something else. But, at least there is something on record on our neighbor if something happens again.

Almost but no cigar..they were on the right path but dropped the ball. :(

NEW: #SutherlandSprings shooter was involved in alleged sexual assault in 2013. The investigation stalled for reasons yet to be determined.

They honestly didn’t even offer me that. And I was very young at the time so I wouldn’t have known I could do that.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t force him to talk to them. There were witnesses to what he wrote on my door.

I wonder what stalled the sexual assault investigation. Not enough evidence maybe? or did he terrorize the hell of victim into silence. Pages back there is a link to a report of a former girlfriend stating when she broke up with him he stalked her and assaulted her. Wonder what the nature of type of assault. How many others too afraid of him to speak up over the years. Pondering here.

They will probably do that . A committee will be formed . After the committee will report to a committee that review the committee's final report and submit the committee review of the committee which will be submitted to a committee

That committee will come up recommendations which will be sent to a committee for a committee review .

That committee will analyze the fiscal implications of the committee review of the committee review of the committee .

That committee will conclude that the corrections needed are too costly and another committee will be formed to review the committees report on the financial agnel and come up with cheaper solutions which will be sent to a committee for review

that committee will send there conclusions to congress for funding which will form a committee to study the committees committee report of the committee that went through a committee for the committee afet the committees committees

After that a committee will formed.........

The gov printing office will print 10,000 copies of each committee reports , will end up on the floor in the govt printing office warehouses that house the committee reports .

And So It Goes...............
Never saw it explained as clear as this! That is how committee's roll!

The trouble is, restraining orders are worthless if a person is determined to harm you. Sometimes they escalate the problem.

Everyone should read “The Gift Of Fear” by Gavin deBecker, which explains these issues in detail.

The thing is, everyone has a right to remain silent. No one HAS to talk to LE. That’s a protection for all of us, even though it allows someone like your neighbor to avoid arrest. Anyone should think twice if they think they want to give up that right in order to solve crimes. It’s a delicate balance.

"John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said he is working on legislation that would require swift reporting of military criminal history data. The requirement currently is based on an internal Pentagon rule that does not have the force of law."

So there is no actual law that military criminal history must be federally reported?! Are you kidding me??!!

Dear x_files,

I certainly agree!

Your post makes me wonder how many reports the Sheriff's office did have on him over the years.

Did he have wealthy relatives that kept criminal charges away? I am not judging, just wondering why he was not in prison a long time ago.

His behaviour was that of a dangerous offender long before he committed this horrid crime.

Beginning to wonder if some money helped make things slip through cracks.

Anyone take the time to do a look up on home Devin Kelley lived at? My husband mentioned something along the lines of a mansion and I thought he was joking. NOT!
HE was not living IN the home was he???
