They say this guy is 5'9"...no way it's BD.

Earlier post mentions the lawsuit, I find it interesting that USPS shows the suit was served at his home in the afternoon of the 20th. The complaint also stated the loan contained a personal guaranty which put his personal assets on the line. This type of loan may indicate that he may have borrowed money form other less reputable folks.
Another thought is that he owed money to someone who didn't look kindly on him driving around a 100k truck. Harris County real property records show recent liens being filed on his properties for non-payment to subs so there may be quite a few suspects out there.

Is it possible to have a link to the legal documents as I need to read the details? TIA

So, he was served with a lawsuit in the days prior to vanishing. Is this the breach of contract lawsuit? TIA

I thought he was a successful businessman and now there's chatter that he was in financial binds.

Con:
Brett has a loving family of 3 children. He experienced his home, and his daughter's school, flooding during Hurricane Harvey. Later, hIs home was burglarized of over $10,000 worth of personal property. Financial struggles and personal hardships may not be foreign to him. I don't see his 38yo character as a weak one who throws in the towel when he owes a little money as it appears he had a steady stream of income from construction development projects.

What do y’all make of “an unnamed federal agency is involved in the search”? This seems so weird to me. Why remain unnamed?
Because to name which agency is to potentially divulge a LE theory of the case. My personal theory and opinion is that it’s the FBI loaning in their financial crimes and forensic accountants to try to unwind the debt and creditor situation, ascertaining motives. But if for example it were the DEA, that would suggest something entirely different. It could also be simply a federal department that assists with searches, but I think if that were the case they would’ve given the name. All purely my opinion.

MOD NOTE:

Welcome new members! We appreciate your local knowledge and contributions here on this sad thread.

Posts have been removed for violations of the social media rules, or rules from the Etiquette & Information page. LINKS ARE REQUIRED. Please don't make statements of fact new to the thread without providing a link to an APPROVED source (either approved social media pages, MSM articles or law enforcement). Of course, for locals, their impressions or experience of the place don't require a link.

For social media:

Public Pages
Mainstream Media (MSM)
Law Enforcement (LE)
Approved group support pages for victims, such as "Help Find..." and "Justice for..." (usually a page run by family)
Legitimate non-profit organizations who provide assistance and support to victims and their families (e.g., Klass Kids, Texas Equusearch).

  • Posts by an owner or admin of the above public social media pages may be linked, copied, quoted, or paraphrased. This refers primarily to posts or tweets by MSM reporters, announcements by law enforcement, the admin of an approved group support page (usually a page run by family)
  • NOTE: Comments and posts by readers/visitors of these pages are not allowed to be linked, quoted, copied or referenced. They are considered rumor. Just don't mention them.
  • Regarding group support pages, i.e., "Help Find..." and "Justice for...": If at any time the WS staff determines a group support page to be inappropriate, a notice will be posted in the thread stating that the page is no longer approved.
Hoping for some resolution of this case today.

There were statements, earlier on, that Feds could be involved because the land where the car was torched are fed/state lands...do you discount that thought? It seemed far fetched because why not be more explicit..but I am not clear about that.

This one appears to have been put in the mail but not yet received. Regardless, he would have known these lawsuits were coming.

Don't think he committed suicide in the woods, would likely void any policies that would have paid out with his death and likely to be found at some point if shot in the woods. If he did run, he had help to get out of park.

I don't have a lot of legal knowledge, and I also haven't read these documents, but I'll ask anyways - is it possible that this lawsuit was filed in response to his disappearance?

I imagine there are a lot of lenders out there that he/his business owe money to. Many of them believed he was good on his debts and would repay them - until he went missing. When he goes missing, anybody he owes money will want to scramble to get as close to the front of the line as possible.

Just speculation on my part that this lawsuit may not have happened had he not gone missing.

Either way, it is a good find regardless

Definitely my thoughts as well. The phrase "all coming due" comes to mind.
Novus appears to be based in Sarasota, Florida, but this case is out of Kings County (all of Brooklyn)NY as well. Don't understand that yet... hope some legal folks can chime in for us.

The complaints state that New York venue is agreed upon per the terms of these loans. Likely a favorable court for debt collection
