Yes, we are really living differently in the States right now & there's no quick fix, for sure.
It really is the craziest I've ever seen now!
Terrible....

Truly. I feel so bad for u folks. And my American Family members. My Sis carry's a Sig and my Bil a Glock. They are both Canadian's who have lived in the SW for the last 25 years. How did it get to this point? Does not stop us from travelling. We luv the States.

The crazy proliferation of gangs IMO. That sent everything quickly sideways. Simple burglaries turned into violent home invasions. Joy riding in a stolen car turned into armed car hackings.

Gun laws are great, but I'm guessing SM didn't have his chl. I'll gibe up my guns when I can be assured tthe criminals don't have them. NNever gonna happen.

RIP Deputy Goforth

And thank you to all LEO and their families for protecting us.

Shannon J. Miles, 30, was arraigned for capital murder on Monday morning in the Friday shooting of Deputy Darren Goforth, 47. The large and imposing Miles stood calmly and answered Judge Denise Collins’ questions in a low voice, saying mostly “Yes, ma’am” or “No, ma’am.” Collins twice had to prompt Goforth to address her as "ma'am." The courtroom was jammed with police, who listened as Anderson described video surveillance footage of Goforth’s killing.

A figure identified by cops as Miles is seen on video ambushing Goforth from behind while the officer refuels his car at a gas station. The shooter fires his weapon at the back of Goforth’s head and, when Goforth falls to the ground, the shooter stands over Goforth’s body and unloads the rest of his ammo.

While police were able to immediately identify the shooter’s vehicle as being a red Ford Ranger, they couldn’t make out the license plate. But identifying characteristics, such as a white cooler in the bed of the pickup and a market trailer hitch, helped lead investigators to Miles.

When cops searched the garage at Miles’ home, they found the white cooler and also located a .40 caliber pistol that Anderson said ballistics later determined was the murder weapon. The gun was found loaded with Aguila bullets, the same type as the casings found at the crime scene.

Interesting. The shooter reloaded the gun with the same bullets, after emptying his weapon into Officer Goforth. Cold and calculated. No remorse. Not too scared, or flustered, or nervous after the murder to NOT reload. I wonder exactly when he re-loaded the gun, before he put it in the garage in the blue baseball bag.

I'm betting they also tested his hands for gunshot residue, but I doubt we will hear about that until trial.

Anthony Osso, one of Miles' defense attorneys, said Miles "indicated to the investigating officers that he was not involved in the case" and was likely to plead not guilty. Osso said he and attorney Charles Brown were appointed Monday and would seek their own independent ballistics report on the gun that police say is the murder weapon.

Osso said he is aware of the comments made by the county sheriff and district attorney regarding tensions between law enforcement and civilians, but did not want to comment.

A former attorney for the man accused of fatally shooting a suburban Houston officer says he was told the man had a lifelong history of mental illness.

Shannon J. Miles is charged with capital murder in the death of Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth.

In 2012, Miles was found mentally incompetent after being charged following a fight at a homeless shelter where he was staying. He was later declared competent but the charge was dropped.

Jon Evans, Miles' attorney in the Austin case, says Miles' mother told him her son had a lifelong history of mental illness.

Evans said at the time of the case, Miles "suffered from severe mental illness."

But Evans says he can't further detail Miles' medical history due to privacy laws.

6:20 p.m.

President Barack Obama is denouncing violence against police officers following the killing of a Houston-area sheriff's deputy who was ambushed at a gas station.

Obama spoke with Kathleen Goforth on Monday. Goforth's husband, Harris County Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth, was shot 15 times by a man authorities say had a history of mental illness.

The White House says Obama conveyed his condolences and told Goforth he'll keep highlighting the uncommon bravery of police officers.

Obama says Goforth's killing was contemptible and "an affront to civilized society."

Obama placed the call from Air Force One as he flew to Alaska.

4 p.m.

A funeral for the suburban Houston sheriff's deputy who was shot 15 times and died at a gas station has been scheduled.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Monday that the funeral for Deputy Darren Goforth will take place Friday at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church in Houston.

Shannon J. Miles is charged with capital murder and is being held without bond.

"HOUSTON - Shannon Jaruay Miles, who is accused of gunning down a sheriff's deputy on Friday, spent four months in a mental hospital in 2012 after being declared incompetent to stand trial in an aggravated assault case, court records show."

Have to question whether or not he was on any psychotrophic medication a time of the shooting then That would be a possibility.

Also hope that LEO did a drug toxicology screen on perp at time of arrest to screen for street drugs.

3:40 p.m.

A prosecutor says the man accused of fatally shooting a suburban Houston officer spent time in a mental hospital following a 2012 arrest.

Shannon J. Miles is charged with capital murder in the death of Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth.

Miles' criminal history includes an arrest in 2012 following a fight at a homeless shelter he was staying at in Austin.

Joe Frederick, a prosecutor with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, says Miles was found to be mentally incompetent in October 2012 after being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was sent to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon, Texas.

Frederick says Miles was declared competent in February 2013, but the charge was dropped against Miles after the victim could not be located

Miles, who appeared disoriented in court today, remained cuffed throughout his appearance and wore yellow jail jumpsuit. He is facing a capital murder charge. No plea was entered. Miles was provided court-appointed attorneys Anthony Osso and Charles Brown.

An eyewitness, who saw the suspect flee, described the make and model of Miles' red Ford Ranger, prosecutors said, leading authorities to Miles' house. Prosecutors said they found a gun matching the ballistics of the gun that killed Goforth.

A witness viewed a video line-up and positively identified Miles as the shooter, prosecutors said.

Don't give them up even if you are sure the violent criminals don't have them. You think a gentle giant like Michael Brown needs a gun to kill you? Phhht. Not hardly.

A gun is what allows a 110-pound woman to defend herself effectively against an unarmed 250- or 300-pound violent criminal.

We don't know "exactly" when SM was arrested, since it was announced about 4 pm Saturday. SM had been "detained" in custody without being "arrested" since approximately 0230. I don't think they were doing drug tox during the 12-14 hours that he was "detained", but not "arrested." I think they were focused on other interrogation issues until he was formally arrested.

Be that as it may, I don't think his behavior before, during, or after the shooting will even begin to scratch the surface of meeting criteria for "not guilty by reason of mental illness/ defect". He planned, carried it out, fled, and attempted to conceal what he did. That demonstrates awareness of right/ wrong.

Of course he will be extensively mentally evaluated. It would be incompetent NOT to do a comprehensive evaluation over weeks to months. And his defense attorneys HAVE to wave the mental illness banner-- it's their job to do that. But I doubt he will ever be found incompetent to stand trial. And I very seriously doubt that whatever mental health issues he has (or "learning disabilities", as we heard early on) will be enough of a mitigating factor to spare him from the DP in Texas. JMO.

He may be nuttier than a fruit cake, but IMO, he clearly demonstrated organized thinking and organized, goal directed behavior that shows he knew right from wrong. Defense attorneys may spend the better part of the next 5-12 years trying to persuade courts, juries, and appeals courts otherwise, but I don't think they will be successful. I think he will be found "competent enough" to stand trial and be sentenced. And I think he will be sentenced to death in Texas. JMO.

David Clarke you rock.
Holy cow.
Well said and bravo to you.
Brilliant.

As an aside, he looks exactly like my DH.
I've booked marked this page to show it to DH in the morning.
Even their mannerisms are spot on.
When my DH is angry his mannerisms are almost exactly like Mr. Clarkes.
It's eerie actually.
I want to wake my hubby up now, to show him his "twinner" (as novelist Steve King has said); but I don't want see two identical angry faces.
Where is the chicken icon?
Sorry for the OT.

It's been open season on black people for a long time. Not saying it's okay to shoot cops, but things foment when cops are allowed to kill people for no reason with no consequences. So my opinion is we need to clean up the bad cops and show the public they WILL go to jail (which has not been the case so far, unfortunately).

Next we need to stop making it so easy for mentally ill people to get guns.

If those two issues are ignored this problem will not get any better.
