Ali Irsan is accused of killing his son-in-law as well as his daughter’s close friend, after his daughter converted to Christianity & married a non-Muslim man. Irsan has pled not guilty. There are no cameras in the court room so here is an update from outside. #abc13

State, defense rest in case of man accused in 'honor killings'

"HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - After the defense attorneys asked the judge to declare a mistrial Wednesday morning, Ali Irsan took the stand in his own defense....

Around 4:45 p.m., the defense and state rested. Closing arguments are expected Thursday and the case is expected to be in the hands of the jury soon.
Both sides will get 90 minutes to make their case before it goes to the jury."

Ali Irsan found guilty of capital murder in 'honor killing' trial

"HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - Ali Irsan was found guilty of capital murder Thursday.

The jury returned its verdict around 5 p.m. after about 35 minutes of deliberation. While the verdict was being read, Gelareh Bagherzadeh's family was holding hands and Coty Beavers was sitting in the front row....

The sentencing phase will begin Friday at 11 a.m.

A sketch showed what Ali Irsan looked like in his double-murder trial as he took the stand in his own defense for about five hours Wednesday. At times, he stroked his beard. At other times, he complained about the prosecutor's line of questioning.

In closing arguments Thursday, just as in opening statements five weeks ago, prosecutors again said Irsan tried to control everything, especially his family...."

Irsan and his attorneys attempted to paint his attitude toward his daughters as an overprotective father, but not one who was angry enough to kill....

A verdict in 35 minutes?? Wow. That's a slam dunk. Clearly no question in anyone's mind as to his guilt.

I'm so happy for the families of the victims that this phase is over with.

I'm still concerned about other family members of the murderer. Some of them supported him in his efforts to 'deal with the situation'.
