Wife and daughter of ‘honor killing’ defendant tell Houston jury about rapes, beatings and attempted drowning

August 3, 2018

"The first wife and daughter of a 60-year-old Conroe man convicted last week of capital murder in two 2012 “honor killings” took the witness stand Friday, and both testified he raped them and subjected them to years of persistent, brutal abuse.

Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan’s eldest daughter said she married out of desperation in 1999 to get out of his house only to learn — after her father drugged her and shipped her off to his homeland in Jordan — that her father had shot and killed her new husband.

Irsan’s first wife and his daughter, who is set to resume testimony on Monday, are expected to be the last two prosecution witnesses in the penalty phase of his Houston capital murder trial....

Halting, tearful testimony Friday about rapes and attempted murders brought several people in the courtroom gallery to tears. A female juror held her head in her hands. Irsan showed little reaction, besides occasionally shaking his head in denial.

When Irsan’s daughter came off the witness stand for the day, relatives of her slain husband and those of the two 2012 fatal shooting victims lined up to hold and hug her.

The first witness to take the stand was Irsan’s first wife, Robin Dahl, who told the jury that on the day she met the defendant in 1979 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he raped her. Irsan took her home, compelled her to marry him and in the ensuing 16 years of marriage in the Midwest, Texas and Jordan, he beat her, threatened her with guns, knives, a rope and a chain saw — which she understood he intended to use to cut her into pieces and bury her remains in the backyard, she said....

When Irsan brought home a second wife, he gave her electric shocks with a device he set up and instructed Nesemah to sit on her back while he tied the woman up with rope. And then he beat his wife with a 2-by-4....

Dahl and Irsan’s eldest daughter Nesemah, who grew up in Texas and Jordan, then took the stand for about two hours, describing what she called “a miserable life” at her father’s home where he repeatedly brutalized her mother....

“I was in the bed and he came behind me and he said, ‘This is something normal. This is what dads do.’ He flipped me over and he raped me,” she said, wiping her eyes. He then told her to take a bath and he tried to drown her in the tub, she told jurors. She fought back and sustained a head injury, she testified.

“He wanted to make it look like it was a suicide or an accident, but he couldn’t because there was a big bulge on my head,” she said...."

Jordanian patriarch’s family testifies in his defense in Houston ‘honor killings’ death penalty trial

Thursday, August 9, 2018

"Defense attorneys for a Jordanian immigrant facing the death penalty for killing his son-in-law and his daughter’s close friend in two 2012 “honor killings” spent Thursday trying to elicit support and sympathy for their client, calling family members to testify about beatings he endured during a strict upbringing in the Middle East.

Brothers and sisters of Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan -testifying from Jordan using a Skype computer link and an Arabic translator - told of the rigors of growing up with an abusive father in a country torn by war....

On Thursday, Irsan’s older sister testified that he was frequently beaten and kicked out of the house by their father who was often angry

“He would get mad,” Nawal Rawabdeh Irsan said about their father in Jordan, through a court interpreter. “He used to beat him with his hand, with a cord, with a stick.”

The sister talked about a 1970 war involving the Palestine Liberation Organization that resulted in a path of dead bodies the children had to traverse to get water from a well or to get food.

“We went up to the bakery,” she said. “At the bakery there were dead people.”

Irsan’s brother, Omar Rawabdeh, also said their father, who was in the Jordanian army, often physically abused Irsan and the other children.

“He would beat us,” Rawabdeh said....

The trial, in state District Judge Jan Krocker’s court, is expected to last another week."

Family testifies in punishment phase for man convicted in 'honor killings' 9with clip)

AUG 09 2018

"HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Family members of Ali Irsan are trying to convince a jury to spare his life in this punishment phase of the so-called "honor killing" trial. They're not even in the country, but pleas from Irsan’s loved ones are being heard loud and clear as a jury tries to decide if Irsan should live or die for committing the capital murders of his daughter’s husband and friend.

The man Irsan’s relatives are describing sounds completely different from the so-called Muslim extremist who hunted and murdered two Houstonians who shamed him.

"He has a good heart,” says Irsan’s sister Newal Alrawabdeh. Irsan's brothers and nieces also testified via web cam from Jordan through a translator. His 18-year-old son also took the stand on his father’s behalf. As for Irsan's father? His siblings told jurors he was violent and abusive particularly to Irsan...."

Jordanian father convicted of two Houston-area ‘honor killings’ tells jury he treated his daughters ‘like princesses”

August 10, 2018

"...“I would buy a lot of gifts. I love to make people smile,” said Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan, as he testified in his own defense for the second time. “Put a smile on people’s faces.”

He was insistent that witnesses lied about his bad acts, and when prosecutors asked why so many people, almost 100 witnesses, would come to court to lie, he flashed the observers in the gallery a broad smile and said, “When the cow trips, everyone sharpens their knives.”

The 60-year-old father of 12 insisted on testifying, despite his attorneys’ numerous warnings, and gave jurors a three-pronged defense that included his love for family, how the people who testified against him lied and how hard it was to grow up in a war zone in Jordan with a strict father.

“I decided I would rather live in hell than live with that man,” Irsan said of growing up with an abusive father in Jordan. “I took 120 aspirin pills to kill myself.”

His brother found him and took him to a hospital to get his stomach pumped.

Prosecutors later had a field day when they cross-examined Irsan about earlier testimony that he killed a different son-in-law in 1999, scammed money out of government agencies and family members, as well as the days he spent beating his first and second wife and their children.

Special prosecutor Marie Primm spent more than an hour asking Irsan about dozens of schemes to get money from FEMA, his family, his mosque and the airlines every time he flew...."

RIGHT NOW: Juror deliberating whether man convicted of double murder in so-called #honorkillings should be sentenced to death. My #abc13 coverage:

Jury deciding if 'honor killings' father Ali Irsan should die for his crimes (with clip)

"HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The jury in the trial of Ali Irsan, the man convicted of killing his own son-in-law and his daughter's close friend, has begun deliberations on whether he should be sentenced to death....

Defense attorneys tried bring in elements of Irsan's Jordanian background in their plea for a life sentence.

"How can you sentence a person to death if you don't understand a person's culture or background or how they were raised," defense attorneys said.

In their bid to sway jurors, defense attorneys went back and forth between using passages of the Bible and speaking about the tenants of Islam.

"What greater honor as a radical extremist Muslim, if he is to be sentenced to death," said defense attorneys. "You have the ability to deny that honor. You have the ability to deny martyrdom."

"The man's lost everything, there's no need to kill him," said the defense.

Ali Irsan is dressed in a black suit and he remained quiet during closing arguments. Family members of both victims are also in court, as they have been throughout the months-long trial."

Jurors deliberating fate of man who murdered daughter's husband, best friend in honor killing

August 13, 2018

"HOUSTON - Prosecutors in court Monday urged jurors to send Ali Irsan to death row, calling him a violent, radical Muslim extremist who stalked and murdered two people he blamed for his daughter’s abandonment of his religion. ...

Irsan’s wife, who is also charged in the killings, testified that her husband planned to kill three others -- Beavers' mother, twin brother and his daughter, Nesreem -- before his arrest.

Jurors deliberated for about five hours before they were sent home.

Deliberations will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday...."

Finally! Justice for Coty, Cory and their entire family and all the many of us friends of them through life! May he burn in hell.
I only have one concern now, is there protection being offered to the jurors for a time? Irsan family is (in my opinion) just as freaking nutso as their father (and by family I mean those who helped him commit his crimes, not every family member) and Id not put it past this family to attempt retribution against those who would send the patriarch to death...

Young widow at center of Houston ‘honor killings’ speaks out to raise awareness

August 17. 2018

"Nesreen Irsan finally had a night without nightmares.

The 30-year-old widow at the center of Houston’s two “honor killings” six years ago was able to sleep peacefully Tuesday night, the day her Jordanian father was sentenced to death row.

It was the first time since running away from home and converting to Christianity in 2011 that she did not have nightmares about being hunted by her father and other family members, an ordeal she detailed exclusively for the Chronicle this week...

...to help deal with the grief, sadness and guilt she has about what happened, she spoke out to raise awareness about honor violence in America.

“I think the story needs to be told. There are things that are going on that people need to know about,” she said, . “Even today, people are still terrified of him, even though he’s on death row. There are people who still believe in what he was doing.”...

Nesreen said she hopes her plight sheds light on honor violence, especially in raising awareness among law enforcement about what runaways may be going through.

“Honor killings in America are real,” she said. “When an American from this type of culture screams ‘I’m afraid’ or ‘My family will kill me,’ it is imperative that authorities take the threat seriously and be proactive instead of reactive. Police cannot wait for something bad to happen before they get involved.”

She hopes for a future where authorities will help victims with relocating to another part of the country or even create a “re-identity package” to change what family members know about their victims.

“They have your social security number, mother’s maiden name, everywhere you’ve ever lived and every detail about you, they know it, because you grew up there,” she said. “We need to help other girls.”"

A Texas court sentenced to death a Jordanian Islamic immigrant, Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan, for killing his daughter, Nesreen Irsan, and her husband, Coty Beavers, after she converted to Christianity

https://thehayride.com/2018/08/musl...his-daughter-son-in-law-for-being-christians/

Just a correction....he did not kill his daughter Nesreen. He killed his daughter’s husband and her good friend. Thankfully, Nesreen is alive. The article listed above has made an error in reporting, so may need to be edited. Nesreen is relieved her estranged father has been sentenced to death for his crimes, and she is speaking out to bring awareness to the reality of honor killings in the US.

Dateline did a thorough story on this tragic case this weekend - “Deliberate Evil”.
It is truth that is stranger than fiction, and took 6 years to bring to justice.
