He said the police department is operating under the assumption that the child simply wandered off.

"We don't have anything to indicate to us that it is an abduction," Penshorn said.

Searchers now will focus on checking areas that weren't searched earlier by foot.

"Most of those areas will include some very large areas of property that we haven't been able to search as of yet. The access is a little more difficult. Some of them have very difficult terrain and very thick vegetation. Also there are several large ponds that we'll in all likelihood bringing in dive teams to check."

The terrain is too difficult for volunteer searchers, but not for an 18 month old baby? Really? What am I missing here? I know a baby can go miles longer than you think they can. But they don't generally go climbing through vegetation or up a mountain or anywhere other than just walking. :waitasec:

My understanding of what's going on after reading 2 other articles is that they don't want volunteers there due to safety concerns and because they're going to use the K9 teams to search (including the thick vegetation) - the volunteers (per Lt. Penshorn) could interfere w/ the work of the dogs...also they're going to be searching on private property, so maybe the landowner doesn't want the general public on it.

About a 2 years ago, a 2yo boy went missing in LLano County...he'd wandered off on a TX Hill Country ranch while his mom was getting something out of the car...it's much more rugged there than New Braunfels, IMO...they found the little boy over a mile away after a DPS helicopter spotted him.

They did use volunteers (and TES), but at the time they weren't doing a 'recovery' search...Owen was found w/i 15 hours & miraculously survived sub-freezing temps by getting up on some rocks.

This article gives a good description of what little Owen would have seen during his 1-mile trek...it also mentions how volunteers (and rocks) interfered w/ the thermal tracking system while trying to find Owen.

IMO, LE can have good reasons to not want volunteers up in the mix of what they're doing.

Okay, when was the last independent sighting of Joshua? Not parents...

This isn't adding up...yes toddlers can wonder off, but in the dark of night??That's the part that makes me think it was an abduction..toddlers are usually afraid of the dark.

My son never was afraid of the dark, he was an explorer, and I lost him a few times, one time at night, outside. Thank God we lived in apartments with nosey neighbors, he was found in 20 min. He was 19 mos old when that happened. And that was the last time I ever hosted a drinking poker night at my house. I felt like the worst Mom in the world!!!

I don't remember which video it was but I heard a reporter say little Josh may have followed friends out the door when they were leaving.

it seems if this little fella wandered off the searchers or dogs would've found him by now. did they ever say if dogs picked up his scent anywhere?

I'm glad they called authorities so fast.

A 20 minute window of opportunity. I wonder how well they knew the friend who left their house.

eta
Also wondering if friend left abruptly.

A police spokesman says the search for Joshua Davis of New Braunfels was switched to a "recovery effort" Sunday morning. New Braunfels police Lt. Michael Penshorn says that means "cadaver dog" crews have been brought in to assist the efforts to find the child.

It is the icy steps and him not slipping...

Combined with the not reacting to the cold with no shoes on...

Those are the two things that surprise me. My daughter has sensory issues, so she had no issue running outside in the snow barefoot when she was 2 or 3. Most toddlers would find that uncomfortable.

My kids could be outside in bare feet in cold, on gravel, and it never bothered them. I was that way as a kid but not now.

However, my (current) theory is that this little guy had help leaving the house.

where are you little man! I prayed for you at church this morning....

I did too nurse...our entire congregation prayed for him. I just do not understand why he has not been found.

there was a little baby around his age in the pew right in front of me this morning...

I remember the happiness and joy of that age of my own son...

I hope he is found soon... I hope he is found alive... this poor family... to have to be going through this...

I know KIDS often have no issue. I also walked around outside all the time with no issue. But that generally isn't till a bit later... an 18 month old baby is usually still reactive to the cold and the pain. While a 3 year old has the goal in mind to do whatever they set out to do.

A 3 year old going outside during the day, might see a bike, or a ball, or another kid and not care about the rocks or cold... keep going anyway.

In the dark, going outside... what would be important enough for an 18 month old to not react to the cold? :waitasec:

Obviously it's probably the case, it just doesn't make much sense to me. But I'm not a baby either.

The area around the mobile home park where the family lives ranges from grassy to wooded, and Penshorn said a small child would not likely be visible to searchers even if a few yards away.

Sunday, searchers covered an area less than a mile radius from the family's home, Penshorn said.

A call to the child's family home found the phone disconnected Sunday.

There is a post here & twitter that he has been found alive...only a rumor at this point.

Please God give us a miracle.

they're saying it's 10 miles away...I haven't had time to check out google maps to see if that's true...and if it is, how did he get 10 miles away?

ETA: I checked...it is about 10 miles & shows 20 min. by car.
