Investigators obtain phone records of Maleah Davis' stepfather
Investigators have obtained the cellphone records of Maleah Davis’ stepfather, according to court records.

“A call history log will reveal with whom the defendant, Vence, communicated after the last time Maleah is seen on camera,” the document read.

The Chief spoke briefly about the case of the 4-year-old Houston girl who was missing for more than a month before her remains were found along a rural road hundreds of miles away.

“Cowards with no soul just dumped her like she’s roadkill, and I’m just grateful we were able to bring her home,” Acevedo said.

Acevedo said he is not worried about whether Vence’s confession will stand up in court.

“When he told Quanell X, we already knew who the suspect was,” Acevedo said.

As for other suspects, Acevedo said the department’s investigation will look into all angles of the case, including allegations of abuse or institutional failings.

“We want to leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of what happened to that child,” Acevedo said.

The City of Houston is designating June 9 as Maleah Davis Day.

The city issued the proclamation to honor the 4-year-old whose remains were found in Arkansas last week, one month after her disappearance.

Mayor Sylvester Turner approved a request earlier this week to turn the Houston City Hall lights pink – her favorite color – on Sunday.

“Just as the light will shine in her memory, we must continue to shine a light on the horrific circumstances that lead to her death and make a promise to protect all children in our community," Turner said in a statement.

MALEAH DAVIS CASE: Derion Vence's cellphone records seized by police
Investigators want the information from Derion Vence's cellphone, including his location, during the time Maleah Davis was missing.

Vence has been charged in connection with the death of 4-year-old Maleah.

Houston police requested the information, including geo-location and cell tower data, from Verizon covering the dates from April 30 to May 15. The warrant covers messages and all the data stored on Vence's phone.

Investigators have obtained the cellphone records of Maleah Davis’ stepfather, according to court records, and have also secured a warrant for the cellphone records of Maleah's mother, Brittany Bowens.

According to court documents, Bowens' phone was found in the family's abandoned car the night Maleah was reported missing.

That car was used to drop off Vence at the hospital after he said he was attacked and Maleah was kidnapped.

Police are trying to figure out which phone calls were made before Maleah's disappearance and who had access to the phone after the car left the hospital and was abandoned.

Houston police tell me they got a search warrant to obtain Derion Vence’s phone records for three or four days prior to Maleah Davis' disappears up until a few days after Derion was arrest.

Police say they're still waiting on Maleah Davis' cause of death from the medical examiner. They don't have enough information to prove intent. That’s why there is no murder charge at this point. Police tell me they're not looking at other suspects at this time.

Investigators seize Derion Vence's cellphone records
Investigators on the Maleah Davis case have seized Derion Vence’s cellphone records.

“…if the missing phone is being used subsequent to defendant’s claim that it was left in his Nissan, the call history data could lead investigators to the person using the phone, and would provide information regarding from whom calls are being received.”

Vence told investigators he lost his phone on May 3 when he was confronted and assaulted by two Hispanic men on the way to the Bush airport to pick up Maleah’s mom, Brittany Bowens.

Vence said he lost conscious during the confrontation and when he woke up, he and the two children were in the men’s pickup truck. He claimed during the confrontation his phone was in his 2011 Nissan Altima and that’s the last time he saw it.

More of the interview with DV's mistress. She writes DV letters in jail to tell him how he's being portrayed in the news. She canceled a meeting with detectives this week after a threat to arrest her. There are felony warrants out for her arrest in other states.

Residents in Grand Mission are tying pink ribbons on trees in their yards to raise awareness for child abuse.

June 9​
Maleah Davis Day in Houston is Sunday. City Hall will be lit up with pink lights, Maleah's favorite color.

Family, friends and the Houston community will gather in remembrance of the 4-year-old.



Walk With Maleah starts at 7:30 a.m. at City Hall. Participants will walk from there to the Harris County Jail.

Everyone is asked to wear pink shirts.

San Antonio memorial for Houston's Maleah Davis set for this weekend

King's Angels, a group founded after baby King Jay Davila went missing from San Antonio earlier this year, wants to set up a memorial in Maleah's honor.

"We are asking the public to bring teddy bears or other stuffed animals that we can donate to other children that may have been victims of abuse, trauma, neglect or are underprivileged," the page says. "We can find a blessing in this tragedy and do good work for other children in Maleah’s honor."

The memorial event begins at 7 p.m. at the San Pedro Springs park.
