As to what police are looking for in their fingertip searches of the area where the lorry was parked - do you think it realistic that there were some people still alive and well enough to run off before the ambulance was called? The photo of the inside looks like it wasn't actually carrying cargo so there'd be room for a lot more people. I assumed it was empty just because it was being taken back to Ireland to be off-hired (hence the tractor unit coming from Ireland to collect it) but then why would the fridge unit be running?
I wonder if the tracker can tell when the trailer is loaded? The ones I've had experience of would frequently alarm if the lorry was jolted by loading or unloading but I don't know if fridge units do. It's certainly odd if the trailer had travelled a lot whilst empty - transport companies don't usually run lorries empty, they're not very economical beasts, so they will try to arrange a return load to claw back expenses if possible
I guess if the driver IS involved then he could have panicked once hooked up when he realised the fridge unit was on and stopped as soon as possible to check, even if that wasn't the intended drop off point

It later emerged that the vehicle was registered in the Bulgarian coastal town of Varna under the name of a company owned by a female Irish citizen. The Bulgarian prime minister is reported to have said the vehicle was last in Bulgaria in 2017.

why would you register it in Bulgaria , are there some kind of tax advantages ?

'Joanna Maher, 38, was yesterday revealed as the keeper of the Scania truck that was registered in Bulgaria in 2018.

Mrs Maher and her husband Thomas, from Warrington, last night insisted they sold the lorry cab a year ago to a company in Ireland.'

Update: Friday 25 October 12:48
We have carried out warrants in Cheshire as part of the investigation into 39 bodies being discovered in a lorry trailer in Grays.

As a result, a 38-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman from Warrington have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and on suspicion of 39 counts of manslaughter.

A 25-year-old man, the driver of the lorry, remains in custody on suspicion of murder. A warrant of further detention was granted yesterday, Thursday 24 October, by local magistrates.

We would continue to ask journalists and those on social media not to speculate of the identities of anyone involved in this investigation.

Last night, Thursday 24 October, we began the movement of the victims from the Port of Tilbury to the chosen mortuary site at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

This is all being done in close liaison with HM Coroner and we continue to work to ensure that the dignity of victims and respect for their loved ones are at the forefront of our investigation.

The first post-mortem examinations will begin today, Friday 25 October.

Formal identification will then follow the coronial process and will be a lengthy but crucial part of this investigation. As our investigations continue, the picture may change regarding identification, and we will continue to provide updates when appropriate under the direction of HM Coroner.

Mrs Maher registered the vehicle at a run down 10-storey building in the seaside resort of Varna
One resident of the number seven building in Varna told the Mail Online: "There have been many, many companies using that small office for business here.
The letters used to be put up against the wall and somebody would have to come and collect them.

"It has been secured and is disused

"It is locked up now. I have never seen anybody there.

Bulgarian officials believe that there may be no other connection to the country, other than the PO Box and registration certificate.

again why would previous owner use Bulgaria?
