Interview of Det Supt Lewis Basford transcript.

Det Supt Lewis Basford: So shortly after 9:30 last night, Constance and Mark were located by a member of the public who subsequently dialled 999 following observing them and obviously the images in the national news. Sussex Police arrived in the locality we are in now and detained the couple. Unfortunately at that time the baby was not present and at this time we are now working on an open land search in the area to locate the baby.

Reporter: What would you like the public to do? How can they assist you?

Det Supt Lewis Basford: We are asking the public to remain vigilant in the open areas and as they go about their business, but also to look at the premises that they own, the outbuildings that may be within their own [...] to their own building and their own property, and please take just 5 minutes to really look at those and assist us in that search for the baby.

Reporter: You have a lot of assets here today, can you just take us through on what's going on.

Det Supt Lewis Basford: Yes, so we've used assets obviously to join us from Sussex Police and the Metropolitan Police, but that also includes the use of drones, [...] helicopter, and also obviously specialist search officers as we looked to obviously take the search into the open land from where we are now.

Reporter: Great. So any sightings, 999 or ... ?

Det Supt Lewis Basford: Any sightings, yes, call 999 and quote Operation Zeal and clearly, you know we are risking our [...] our aim here is the safe location of that baby.

An officer at the Roedale Valley Allotments at the end of Stanmer Villas told MailOnline this morning the site is a 'potential crime scene'. One local said officers were seen photographing an oil drum used to burn rubbish. Dozens of police then began carrying out a finger print search' of the plots, where items including some pink children's ear muffs were put in an evidence bag.

Ugh, if they knew the baby was unwell and they've killed/disposed of it themselves then <modsnip> I'll get permabanned if I say anything.

officers searching for Constance Marten and her newborn baby swooped on Mark Gordon and kneeled on him for up to 40 minutes...........

Constance sat next to Gordon on the floor as he was arrested.............

they got him at around 9pm. A couple of police were struggling to take him down ............ saw them shouting and struggling.

She was there and she was saying they should let him go because he has a mental health issue.

Local claims he spotted Gordon with a suitcase walking past Stanmer Villas on Monday morning - hours before he was arrested by police.

full details at link..........

In terms of logistics - it looks like the nearest cashpoint is on the wall at Mulberrys off licence on Hollingbury Place, so prior to arrest they appear to have headed west past the first turn onto Hollingdean Terrace before going up Stanmer Villas. There’s thick woodland along Golf Drive, which is presumably where police started their search last night before moving up to the allotments and the wooded strip that runs alongside earlier today. Also a couple of car parks up there that look to have been park-ups for convoy type living vans in the past - not sure if thats’ still the case.

I don't think the allotments would have made sense personally. Unless they wanted shelter. I guess perhaps they don't get a lot of use in winter. But a baby crying there would likely draw unwanted attention. You'd think a hungry baby that hadn't been fed since at least last night would be crying and not *that* hard to find if it was in the vicinity.

Det Supt Lewis Basford: We joined Sussex Police overnight and we got Metropolitan police officers now deployed on to the open land search. It is a vast area and at the present we are looking in the local vicinity to where the couple were arrested last night, seeking a shelter or location to where they may have been held up and hopefully where the baby is present.

Reporter: You obviously now have the couple being held and being questioned. Are they offering any guidance on where the baby is?

Det Supt Lewis Basford: At this time we've got no information from the inquiries we've had since the arrest that are leading us to any location on where the baby is. We are certainly working on the premise that the arrest location was close to open land and the couple moving towards that land and that's why we are focusing heavily on where we are right now. We know that they travel, we know they travel long distances, and so actually my plea to members of the public here in Brighton and crossing over to Newhaven is please be vigilant in the open land where you are, in the outbuildings you may have in your own property and assist us in that way by being vigilant and searching for the areas that you own and occupy.

i know the convey/van park-it used to be a casual area where you could stay over night in your van but past year the new laws have stopped vans parking overnight in most places in brighton now..i wouldnt have left my baby anywhere i dont understand why they would have left it go go that didtance to the atm…

But how long until the crying turns to softer whimpering as the baby's energy reserves deplete? :( You'd also be looking at hypothermia in the infant.

I'm afraid that if baby was alive in the woods when this pair were arrested that they would have wanted someone to fetch the baby and care for it?

Officers are also testing a placenta found on the M61 to find out if the missing newborn is a boy or a girl, it has emerged.

You'd think so. Unless they are of the belief that without them the baby is better off dead. That, knowledge that the baby is being taken care of by someone else, and it not being alive - Are really the only reasons I can think of as to why you wouldn't cooperate in telling them where it is.

They are proving everyone right who had concerns about them.
The secret nature of the system does no favours. If they had been able to reveal more earlier on the likelihood is they could have been able to find them a lot quicker. It was obvious to those familiar to similar cases what was going on but most people aren't familiar. They just see an alternative set up and leave them be.
