Chapman in the dock

Mr Justice Goose enters the courtroom. Chapman is not visible from the press benches but we understand he is present in the dock to hear his sentence. Waring, in a dark blue tracksuit, is also in the dock.

Nigel Power, KC, prosecuting, rises to address the court.

He says Chapman was born on March 21, 2000, and was 22 at the time of the murder, but is now aged 23.
NP: “He described much of his previous offending when he gave evidence. He has appeared on 20 separate occasions for a total of 45 offences. He was first convicted in November 2014 when he was 14. He’s been sentenced to all types of community and custodial sentences. His first custodial sentence was in 2015. It’s fair to say there is no relevant previous violent offending. He admitted to persistent class A drug dealing in the autumn of last year.

“The penalty for murder is a mandatory life imprisonment. The public know you will have to decide upon, if there is one, a minimum term before he is eligible for release.”

I'm shocked Chapman is actually in the dock and didn't do a Cashman or McSweeney and refused!

Interesting that Defence Counsel has argued against WOL, but Prosecution does not seem to have suggested it at all ?

Thanks - I think the live stream will start when the judge begins his sentencing remarks.

Just adding these posts for the record

CHAPMAN JAILED FOR LIFE WITH MINIMUM OF 48 YEARS

Justice Goose will now outline the minimum term Chapman must serve before becoming eligible for parole.
There are gasps in the public gallery as Chapman is jailed for life with a minimum term of 48 years for the murder of Elle Edwards.

THOMAS WARING JAILED FOR NINE YEARS

Justice Goose turns to Waring.
He says the actions of Chapman’s accomplice “significantly damaged the interests of justice” and his assistance was important to Chapman.
The judge sentences him to a total of nine years behind bars.

Blimey 48 years! Wish they dished out more sentences like that.
Entirely agreed!

I haven't followed this case too closely but it was mentioned on the Lucy Letby thread and I commented on there as the judge apparently made some comments as to whether a Whole Life Order might be appropriate and I didn't think it would fit that. It appears the he was trying to get as close to it as he possibly could, though! I suggested that the starting point would be 30 years and that it would end up around 35 or somewhere around there. Boody hell, though - 48 years!

Is there a link anywhere to the actual sentencing remarks?
