Son said Stewart told him two men were involved in taking Helen away

“The defendant’s son Jamie was asked if his dad had ever mentioned Joe and Nick - he said he had not heard his father talk of them all.

“He said it was never mentioned to him that Helen had been taken away by two men.

“Oliver Stewart was asked similar questions - he told you he went to visit the defendant in prison in early December 2016.

“It was then that his father told him for the first time that two men called Joe and Nick had come to the house asking for paperwork.

“Oliver said the defendant told him on more than one occasion he had been assaulted.

“He said the men had given him a phone.

“Oliver said from what his father told him during that visit, he understood the two men were involved in taking Helen away.

“Oliver said until that point, his dad said he had been worried about threats to himself and Jamie.”

Judge starts to outline defence case

“I will now move onto the case for the defence.
“Catherine Richards evidence was read to the court, despite not being agreed and prosecutor Mr Trimmer not being able to cross examine what she had to say.
“This can sometimes be the case when a witness is too ill to attend court.”

Stewart chose to give evidence
“No defendant in a criminal trial can be made to give evidence, but Stewart chose to give evidence.
“You must judge this by the same fair standards as any other witness.
“You will have to decide, as the prosecution say, whether the account he gave you from the witness box is an elaborate piece of fiction tailored to fit the prosecution case, or whether it might be, or is true.”

Relevance of husband's business a matter for the jury

“You now have extracts of Helen Bailey’s book When Bad Things Happen in Good Bikinis, to which the defence say are relevant to the question of whether there were aspects of John SInfield’s business dealings he kept to himself.

“How relevant those business dealings are, are for you to decide.”

Lols. He's a good guy, this Judge Bright. JB seem to be the initials to indicate a good man, in this case.

Judicious Balance, perhaps.

Question :

Does a jury go in with a vote first? Then debate if needed ?

Stewart said he knew nothing of Helen's death

“Stewart told you he knew nothing of Helen’s death until he was told her body had been found.

“He said he had nothing to do with her death.

“He told you that he feared for Helen’s safety if he told the truth about her alleged kidnappers Joe and Nick. “Stewart gave you background to his life - how he met his wife Diane, how they got married in 1985, and how Diane had epilepsy since she was 16.

“She was able to have children and the couple had Jamie and Oliver.

“He told you how he was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis - and ended up in intensive care.

“He said after an admission to Addenbrooke’s Hospital he was unable to go back to work - but an insurance policy paid him 75 per cent of his salary on a monthly basis.”

“Stewart said he loved her after this.”

He showed up, uninvited, at night, at her house fifty miles away! I think Fruitcake is a bit mild!

“He said the couple looked at wedding rings and he decided to let her take the lead in the conversation.

“He said he did not administer Zopiclone to Helen secretly - and did not take any of the tablets himself.
“He said Helen said Zopiclone was something she might take, because she had suffered from disturbed sleep.

Helen was concerned about memory loss

“Stewart said the cleaner noticed changes in the Royston house because Helen had not been there to clean up at the time. “
In October 2015 Helen published her book When Bad Things Happen in Good Bikinis.

“She found interviews with the press stressful and was prescribed beta blockers.
“She was concerned about suffering from memory loss. “When she left Boris on the beach this really got to her, Stewart said.”

Nice bit of strategic Bright linkage again

“He said Helen had bad anxiety and suffered dizzy spells as early as 2012.........He said he was a witness to a will Helen made in 2012. “

Author had anxiety and dizzy spells

“He said Helen had bad anxiety and suffered dizzy spells as early as 2012.

Coincidentally the year AFTER she lost her husband and the year she met IS... who had already been prescribed zopiclone twice at that point.

Stewart said Helen took some of the sleeping pills

“Stewart said Helen took some of the Zopiclone tablets herself.

“He said he begun to have rectal bleeding and was told there as a 95 per cent chance he had cancer.
“He said the wedding had to be postponed due to an operation, and was discharged from hospital on March 25, 2016.

“He said Helen drove him everywhere during this time.
“He said he had keyhole surgery and the wound became infected and caused him a lot of pain.”

Stewart said he had not changed standing order

“He said in financial terms, he couldn’t have wanted anything more.
“He said Helen wanted to get her affairs in order and set up a second will, as well as set up a life insurance policy.

“He said he had nothing to do with amending a standing order from Helen’s account on April 11, 2016.
“He said Helen had used her computer and must have done this herself.”

Stewart said surgery wound would have prevented him putting Helen in the cesspit

“Stewart said he first learnt about the cesspit in the garage when we viewed the house before buying it.

“We had it emptied every year.

“He said he didn’t remember a comment with Helen’s brother John about the cesspit being a good place to hide a body, but he did remember the previous owner saying it.

“He said he and Helen had last checked the cesspit in February 2016.

“He said the wound from his operation would have prevented him from lifting up Helen’s body, and dragging her to the cesspit.”

Was it just me or did anybody else find it strange that after meeting online and chatting, they sent each other pictures of their houses? Why would anyone do that? I can't help suspecting that IS instigated that.
