Unless the older person is in a position of trust, e.g. teacher.

I've got a question about the age of consent there. would she be considered an adult at that age? Here in the "States" some states call the age of consent 15 or 16, but that applies only to a person within 4 years of age. So what's the law there?

It would be legal for anybody of any age to have sex with a 16 year old in the UK(unless the older person was in a position of trust , eg a teacher.) However a 16 year old in England wouldn't be able to vote until they were 18, wouldnt be able to drink alcohol till they were 18, wouldn't be able to buy cigarettes till they were 18 and wouldn't be able to do glamour (topless)modelling till they were 18. They used to alllow 16 year olds to do topless modelling and I remember one newspaper doing a countdown to a models' 16th birthday!

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I am relatively local to where this has happened, live about 5 miles from Ibstock, very sad :(

I am a bit late in posting this (since I was waiting for account activation) but I'm pretty sure SB would have HAD to offer K a lift in some way, since LH didn't drive. Because as far as anyone else was concerned she was somewhere she shouldn't have been, so her only other options would be to walk or catch three buses (I checked the google maps route planner for Ibstock to Measham bus journey) , and even the bus would only have been possible if it was Saturday and not Sunday... but then if she fell into SB's path on the pretence of a lift that doesn't explain where her phone was found.

<modsnip>

What about a taxi cab? Was that not an option?

I was under the impression that LH lived with his parents in Coalville and SB had a successful landscape business which allowed him to buy that house in Ibstock.

The age consent over in the Uk seems to be quite different then in the "States".

Here in the "States" yes 16 year olds are legal but only to people say 4-5 years older then them. After that it does not apply and it becomes automatically statutory rape. Not the case in the UK. In the UK, apparently if she is 16, anyone can legally have a mutual go with her whether they are 20,30, 40 or 60 it is legal as long as she is 16 and gives permission and it is deemed mutual.

Not wanting to open a whole can of worms but how do we know that "she was taken advantage of"? When I was her age (not so long ago) I knew exactly what I was doing with the opposite sex. I dated much older men and flirted with them in person and online. I wasn't taken advantage of .... just saying

She did come across very young on her pics on posts. She didn't strike me as mature for her age. You and I were teenagers in different decades and I do wonder if the internet has blurred the lines a little where age differences are concerned...

I was 15 in the 80s so the internet hadn't even been invented (God now I feel old lol) and my socialising was done "in person" with people my own age. At the ages of 12,13,14 etc there was no where I, or any of my friends would have gone where we'd be socialising unsupervised with anyone in their late twenties. We would go to school and youth club and occasionally under 16 discos or parties at people's houses, but always places where we socialised with people in our own age group. If anybody in their late twenties had tried to join us they'd have been thought of as really weird. By 16 we would go out drinking, mainly student nights where people were a similar age but even in non studenty night clubs people tended to stick to their own age groups. It just wasn't the norm for people in their late twenties to be interacting socially with young teens.

Contrast that to now, with the internet a young teen could join a forum to discuss interests and end up discussing them with people of any age and end up with online "friends" of all ages. Then we have social networking sites where anybody of any age can go look at anybody else of any age's accounts, read their thoughts, look at their pics and start talking to them at click of a mouse. The physical barriers that were around when I was a teen just aren't there any more.

Welcome :)

I was thinking he may have thrown the phone from a car window whilst driving past or something, maybe even to divert the search away from where she was.

Wouldn't rule it out entirely, but a taxi would be quite expensive and she would be unlikely to get enough money from her parents without them wanting to know why she needed it. Or maybe SB offered the lift instead of her having to get a taxi... especially if him and LH were her only way to get the money.

I think it's been said LH lived in one of the houses by SB too. A taxi would be an option but they can be expensive, especially if they were short of cash.

I think it was actually a countdown to Charlotte Church's 16th birthday - counting down to when she was 'legal'. Don't you just love our classy media? No wonder some kids are pressured into loosing their virginity so young :(

Just thinking, maybe she didn't realise there would be no buses on a Sunday and was waiting at a bus stop when SB saw her

This was worse than Charlotte Church, it was Linzi Dawn McKenzie's topless debut on her 16th birthday in something like the Sport or The Star.

ETA It was the Sunday Sport. Warning DO NOT GOOGLE HER NAME lol

In early 1994 when McKenzie was 15, she sent sample glamour photographs to local modelling agencies. She began her modelling career glamour modeling and swimsuit work, intending to progress to topless modelling when she turned 16 later that year.

As McKenzie approached her 16th birthday, The Sunday Sport tabloid newspaper expressed an interest in turning her topless debut into a media event. Throughout June and July 1994, it published provocative pictures of McKenzie, touting her 34GG bra size and counting down the days until it could legally show her topless

To be fair it's quite common knowledge to young people that buses are very limited on Sunday's, I'd have thought she would know beforehand that the bus wasn't really an option (and like I said, it would be a multiple bus journey which is impractical compared to a lift). But I suppose there are too many unknowns to rule anything out.

Hi :)

I am also a fellow local.

<modsnip>

I have been thinking of the route SB would have taken if he were to have given a lift to Kayleigh.

To get to Measham he'd have probably gone along the road outside Sense Valley, towards Ashby (those who are not local - the main road to Ashby has several routes you can take to Measham). I then wonder if at Hoo Ash Island (this is the roundabout you'd use to go to Ashby or onto Coalville or towards other villages including Belton) he chose to continue his route to where her clothing was found.

As half the journey would have appeared the correct way, maybe she wouldn't have realised.

Of course, he may not have given her a lift at all - but it does seem like a logical explanation. Doesn't explain the phone though.

Can you please link the news sites that say that? Please provide proof that LH also lived on George Ave.
Where are you getting the info that LH also lived on George AVe? Is it just because the police reports mentioned those 2 houses in their search?
That doesn't mean LH lived in that house...at all.

the charge sheets read out by the police at the press conference.

Apologies if I mentioned more about the social network post than is allowed. I thought it would be ok as long as nothing was directly paraphrased, but mods feel free to edit anything out.

I would assume Kayleigh told her parents that her friend's parents would drop her home. But instead would get back with some arranged transport by LH, either a taxi or much more likely a lift from SB.
