Paige went missing on March 19, I remembered Asad Shah, the Glasgow shopkeeper was killed not long after (March 24) and his murderer has pled guilty, to be sentenced in August. Surprised there's been no news on JL's trial or plea yet? I bookmarked his Facebook page and had been looking every now and again out of interest, but just noticed it's now gone. Could that be because the police are finished looking through it, or did a family member maybe ask for it to be deleted?

Just had a quick check, I thought this was the case

If you are being tried for a very serious crime at the High Court, your trial must start within 140 days from the date you were remanded.

Looking back through this thread, April 1 was the full committal hearing - not sure if that is the date to work from or if the earlier remand date, which I think was March 26, would be the one that counts.
.

So should be coming up to trial either August 4 or August 11 or thereabouts, unless there is a delay for any reason

I think it was about March 25 when Leathem was remanded.

Yes Alyce, I thought that too.
I followed the Mikaeel Kular case and had to read up on Scottish justice system as it's so different to the English one.

Not a very encouraging article ( dated November 2015 ). Hope the trial is not delayed.

Today Scottish Legal News reveals that the 140 day rule, once the “jewel in the crown” of the Scottish criminal justice system because of its guarantee of justice without undue delay, is being routinely ignored and that remand wings in Scotland’s prisons are now bursting with prisoners awaiting High Court trials for up to 10 months.

goodness, really didnt expect this - but very pleased that Paige's family will be spared a trial

A 31-year-old man is facing a life sentence after he admitted murdering Clydebank teenager Paige Doherty.

The 15-year-old's body was found in a wooded area just off Great Western Road on Monday 21 March.

She was last seen alive two days earlier near a deli in the West Dunbartonshire town, before setting off for her part-time hairdressing job.

At the High Court in Glasgow, deli owner John Leathem admitted murdering Paige. He will be sentenced later.

Wow, didn't expect a guilty plea! Better for all involved though in the circumstance.

The court heard Leathem killed Paige in the back office of his shop on Fleming Avenue, before wrapping her in bin bags and putting her in her car.

It also heard Paige bought a roll at the shop at 8.21, and 10 minutes later Leathem had closed the shop's shutters.

By 9.36am, the shop was open again and Leathem proceeded to serve customers until after 3pm that day, the court was told.

More detail from this morning's hearing - what an horrendous killing

Prosecutor says killing of Paige Doherty was 'motiveless

Paige Doherty suffered 61 stab wounds, 43 to the head and neck

Paige Doherty had a further 85 minor wounds, mostly defensive. 146 individual wounds

JLs defence !!

At the hearing, his defence team stated the killer's version of events was that Paige had come to his shop to ask for a job, before they went into the back office where she was to give him her details.

He claims she threatened to tell people he had "touched" her if she did not get a job at the shop. Leathem's defence said he then over-reacted to this by grabbing a knife and repeatedly stabbed her.

John Leathem pleads guilty to the murder of 15 year-old Paige Doherty. Police release following statement

CCTV has been vital throughout this enquiry and officers painstakingly reviewed hours of footage which ultimately revealed that Paige walked into that shop but didn't leave.

This, coupled with extensive forensic examinations of the crime scenes, helped to establish what happened to Paige and who was responsible.

I am sure that the sheer weight of this evidence has led to the guilty plea at court today.

These type of incidents are very rare in Scotland and Paige's untimely death shocked a community to its core, particularly as the man responsible was one of them.

The support from the local community has been much appreciated and I hope that Paige's family can take some comfort from the result of the court proceedings today.
