I live in a similar area and this is very plausible. People live quiet lives and don't immediately assume a crime is taking place. This does not mean they didn't hear a scream and it may be key evidence when added to the bigger picture so well done that neighbour for speaking up.
BTW may be irrelevant but noticed in the press....
Sam's next to neighbour was away on holiday on the day she went missing.
"Elaine Kellett, who has lived next door to the midwife two years – but was on holiday last Friday – said: “She’s a very nice lady. It’s very sad and we miss her. We want her back.”
did he know the neighbour was away? Possible - had he been working in the back garden, two weeks previous & had a casual chat with Elaine.
