Sian O’Callaghan: 400 turn up at Savernake Forest

Police searching for Sian O’Callaghan today asked for members of the public to stop flocking to the Savernake Forest – after 400 turned up to help with the search.

Two 49-seater coaches full of helpers from Swindon arrived at Savernake at 3pm to bolster the operation.

WOW- 400 people showed up to help search. Hugs to each and every one of them!

Halo, I swear I read that too, that some sort of altercation had taken place in the ladies room...

The few details about this altercation appear in post #1, page 1 of this thread, third quote down. The incident occurred in 2008 and it was another woman that delivered the punch in a SUJU nightclub restroom.

Wiltshire Police confirmed Miss O'Callaghan had been assaulted in the toilets of the Suju club in October 2008, when another woman punched and hit her.

A spokeswoman said: "We are aware of a previous assault, but we are very much focusing on the here and now. It is not a focus of the investigation at the moment."

Another horrible aside in this case, Savernake Forest is where Michael Ryan began his massacre in 1987

So glad to hear of the huge, well supported search going on, like others though, I have a bad feeling about this

It is interesting.... there needs to be more coverage. An strange coincidence is that Claudia Lawrence went missing almost to the day Sian went missing 2 years ago. You can read about Claudia here:

UK UK - Claudia Lawrence: Chef, 35, York University, 18 March 2009 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

Seemed like Claudia's case got a lot more coverage.

Seems like maybe they need to cross-check all of the men interviewed in Claudia's case to see if they had any connection to Sian. I can't figure why she would have left without letting her friends know. Might she have been threatened in some way by the woman she went outside to speak to? I hope someone can identify that woman.....

Woman assaulted near missing Sian O’Callaghan’s home

Police have confirmed a lone woman was assaulted by a car driver as she walked along a road in Swindon this morning – less than a mile from missing Sian O’Callaghan’s home.

The incident, which happened at around 10am, saw a 20-year-old woman walking along Elmina Road in the Wiltshire town when she noticed a driver in a red van gesturing to her.

She continued on her way but a short time later a man – believed to be the driver – physically assaulted her.

Police described the victim as was very shaken up, but stressed the incident was not being linked at this stage to the disappearance of Sian, 22, on Saturday.

I wonder did she try to call for help on her phone from this forest area.

The BF is said to have texted her at 3:24 am, and that exact time is given as the first ping on her phone from the location of the forest. So the ping may have been the BF's text.

That's the way I read it.

Sadly I don't think it is going to be long before they find this girls body :(

What is it now? Four days? Hope for the best, but expect the worst. More likely than not that she has been killed. How long it will be before they find the body would be something else.

Not really. Over a quarter of a million people go missing in the UK every year. Besides, from what I understand Claudia Lawrence was engaged in a mumber of different relationships with a variety of men, and the police seem to think that it was one of them that was responsible. They just don't know which one. Or if they do think they know (and they wouldn't tell us if they did) they're lacking sufficient evidence to charge them. I'd have thought it unlikely that the individual concerned, who would have killed Claudia for the obvious reasons, would then suddenly decide to abduct a randomly selected woman off the streets of Swindon. Not impossible I grant you.

Both reports relate to incidents that occurred after Sian's disappearance. I remain to be convinced that the person or persons responsible would seek to advertise themselves in such a manner.

'Don't go into the forest': Helpers told not to search for missing Sian O'Callaghan as police follow 'significant lines of inquiry'

Family and friends looking for missing Sian O’Callaghan were told by police today not to search in the forest where her mobile phone signal was last detected because they were following significant lines of inquiry.

Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who is leading the hunt for Miss O'Callaghan, said: 'The inquiry moves on at a rapid pace, with significant lines of inquiry being developed.

'I've been able to use new technological techniques to provide a tighter search parameter and have been able to rule out large areas of the six-and-a-half-mile radius we have all been searching.'

It is not yet known what such techniques the police have employed are, however Det Supt Fulcher added: 'Those tactics are being urgently progressed today by specialists.'

Sounds to me like they perhaps have narrowed the search due to understanding where her cell phone may have pinged...

This is just so sad. It just cannot end well. I hope she is found today.

Such a beautiful girl...

"I would also like to hear from anyone who saw any vehicles in or near beauty spots between Swindon and Savernake between 3am and 4am."

I have a really dumb question :blushing: about the above quote. Is the term "beauty spot" the same as a scenic place, like the forest? When I first read it I thought they meant beauty parlors lol. I know, dumb question. :loser:

Not a dumb question. I long wondered what a "car park" was - a park for cars? Eh? But yes, a beauty spot is what we in the U.S. would call a scenic place.

I agree, what are the odds of another young girl going missing almost to the date and the hour two years later. Maybe there is nothing in this but it is a very strange coincidence indeed. Claudia is reported to have had many lovers but unfortunately she is not able to deny or confirm this herself. Her reported lifestyle does not mean that she was murdered by someone she knew, she may well have been abducted or murdered by a stranger. Whether the culprit was known to Claudia or not, it could still be the same person who abducted Sian. The date could have some significance, it may be some sort of statement by the culprit. You never know what the extensive search may uncover in Savernake Forest.

Police 'very close' to finding missing Sian O'Callaghan

Police investigating the disappearance of a woman after she left a Swindon nightclub believe they are "very close" to identifying her whereabouts.
---
Det Supt Steve Fulcher said the search had made "good progress" but would be limited to daylight hours and would be assisted by dog teams on Thursday.

"I believe we are getting very close to identifying Sian's whereabouts," he said.

Sincerely hope I am wrong but cannot imagine that it will be a good outcome, so hope that I am wrong

I live in the same town as Sian and everyone is pulling together to help find her its really affected everyone, I have been coming to Websleuths for a long long time and never thought I would be discussing something so close to home. Thank you for putting this on Websleuths and giving it attention.

A car park is indeed a place you park cars :) I think America calls it a parking lot :)
